May as well write it, eh?
On Monday evening, I had a big of a headache but nothing major. I took some Tylenol and it seemed to help. When I woke up on Tuesday morning it was lingering a bit, but soon went away. I went to my regularly scheduled doctor appointment and everything was fine. I didn't thinknto mention the headache because it was mild and went away. By afternoon, it came back and I took Tylenol and a nap and it helped. When I woke up Wednesday, again I had the headache but not too bad. But, at this point I was starting to get concerned. I don't frequently get headaches and at their worst they never go into a 3rd day. But, again, it seemed to go away so I went into work. Not too long after getting there, the headache exploded. I told my boss and called my doctor. While I waited for a call back, I just sat in a dark room. Well, again, it disappeared so I stayed at work. Doctor called back close to the end of my day and wanted me to go to L&D. The headache was gone, so I asked if I can just go get my blood pressure checked. I figured it would have been fine and would have saved me a trip to L&D. Wrong! And, the short walk to the pharmacy made my head explode again.
So I went to L&D. I was monitored for the next 2 nights. No pre-e, but they said I has gestational hypertension and talks of induction started. I was just shy of 37 weeks. They said likely once I got to 37, they would start the induction. But, my blood pressure hadnt spiked for the day so they seemed to change their mind. I was told I was going home and will have twice weekly NST plus my regular OB appointments. We were walking out of my room after being discharged and they told us to wait and go back inside. They decided to induce after all! But there were no openings until Sunday night (it was Friday now), so I was going home for the weekend.
Sunday night I got checked in and hooked to the monitors. I was contracting a lot, though I didn't feel it, so they started pitocin. I was 1cm and 20% effaced. I started feeling contractions, but they didnt hurt. Overall the induction wasn't too noteworthy. It was very long. I think it just takes my body a long time to dilate. I got an epidural at around 3cm, hoping it would make things go faster. But I didn't haha. Checks were about every 4 hours and pretty much each time I only progressed 1cm. My epidural was lopsided and my left leg was super numb.
Fast forward to Tuesday early morning my pitocin has been upped to 22. Things were starting to get super painful. Ibhaf the epidural, but it was like I could draw a line down my belly for the side I can feel the contractions and the side I couldn't. I laid on my side to get the medicine to flow more equally, but it didn't help. At this point, baby's heart rate was starting to decel a bit. The pitocin was too much so they turned it down a bit, to my relief as well.
Baby was still a bit high for pushing so we tried to labor down a bit. Doctor decided to have me try a few practice pushes and they were surprisingly super effective at bringing him down. She geared up and suddenly there were a million people in the room. Some were residents, nurses, a supervising doctor, and I think they called some NICU people just incase because of his decels. Well, with so many people and them trying to tell me how to push, it was much harder to concentrate and my pushing wasn't quite as effective as before. I could feel my contractions but one of the residents didn't seem to trust me on that. The doctor had to tell her that I was indeed feeling them and pushing through them.
I was in disbelief when they told me he was crowning because it was still much faster than pushing with DD. They brought in a mirror, and I touched his head. It took maybe 30 mins max pushing (and my contractions were spaced apart, like every 3 mins or so. They almost wanted to turn my pitocin back Up. But again, my body did the exact same thing with DD and I wasn't induced nor given pitocin). Baby D arrived on 5/23 at 4:30am crying from the getgo getting a 9 and 9 for his APGAR scores. They placed him right on my chest while they finished up. I had minimal tearing thanks to the efforts of the Doctor!
Baby D was fussing up a storm! Most newborns have a quiet, restful period but not this boy. He wanted boob and he wanted it now haha. He was struggling to latch so I took out my nipple shield and that did the trick and it settled him down.
Everything else went really well (except we struggled with painful breastfeeding) and we were cleared to go home after the standard 48 hours.
