Here goes, I'm going to write it while everything is fresh. Also, the hospital is boring.
All weekend I was having increased cramps/bh contractions and was feeling generally uncomfortable, but everything was random and inconsistent. DH and I were watching a movie on Sunday evening, and I realized half way through that I'd had several contractions since the movie began. I started timing them and found they were lasting 1 minute about 9-10 minutes apart, but not too intense. DH noticed and asked jokingly if it was baby time, and when I said maybe he was a little surprised! At 10:15 I had pink-tinged discharge and the contractions were only 6 minutes apart and getting stronger. At 10:45 we called DH's parents and dropped DS off there at 11:00.
We checked into the hospital and got hooked up to the monitor by 11:30. At this point my contractions were about 3 minutes apart and very painful. The nurse checked my cervix around 12:00 and I was completely effaced and about 4 cm dilated. I was a little discouraged because with DS I was complete the first time they checked me, but almost right away the contractions became much more intense and I started feeling urges to go to the bathroom whenever I had a contraction. She checked me again a bit before 1:00 and I was fully dilated, but membranes were still intact. The doctor was called in, he broke my water, and I started pushing.
I pushed for about 20 minutes and could tell baby was getting low, then all of a sudden he was out, blue and not crying. It only lasted a little while but was slightly concerning. I found out a little later that the doctor cut me to get him out quicker because his heart rate got very low. In theory I'm against episiotomies, but so far it feels a lot better than the tear I had last time.
We are doing well, so far he is breastfeeding a lot better than DS. Because he was born at night I have to stay until tomorrow morning for him to have the newborn screening tests. I'm just happy to have this part over with, and am excited for our family of four 😊.
