Susan0utLoud and anyone else, ok real question, why bother spending money on professional ones at all? What's wrong with the candid ones you take with your phone?
Nothing wrong with phone pics, but we wanted photos for our home and for gifts. Phone photos aren't great when they're blown up. Online they're ok.

The quality really just doesn't compare. I like pro photos but I'm cheap. I found an affordable photog and have stuck with her. We only do child / family photos every six months (not including newborn). And I stopped when DS turned two. Will do the same for baby 2.0.
Plus, kids act completely different for other photographers. My kids sometimes will refuse to smile, laugh, or look like they enjoy life in most of my photos. The one we did last night was literally on the ground crawling and making jokes and getting both of them to smile and look at the camera at the same time.
Also, the quality. Most times phone quality sucks, especially if you've zoomed in on your phone first before taking the photo.
