Does keratoconus usually start in the teenage years?

Hi,
I have been experiencing blurred vision for a few weeks. I thought it can be cured by using a contact lens. When I consulted an ophthalmologist, he suggested undergoing some tests and I was finally diagnosed with Keratoconus. All my expectations failed pathetically. My ophthalmologist opted for keratoconus treatment.
Being an early stage, he said it can be cured easily. I have a twin sister, she also has some difficulting in seeing things. Is keratoconus hereditary? Does keratoconus usually start in the teenage years? What do you guys think? Share your insights.
