Nanny vs. Daycare

Hi, all. My husband and I both work full-time about a 25-30 minute drive from home. We're expecting our first in September 2015 and... as of now... we're both planning on continuing to work after the baby is born (though I plan on taking as much maternity leave as humanly possible). We also have a puppy who will be about 1.5 years old when the baby comes.
My husband and I have had early discussions about daycare. There are lots of infant daycares in our area, but we have a busy life and hate dealing with awful New England traffic (especially when we commute an hour every day), so we've also thought about hiring a nanny instead of daycare.
This is compounded because currently, because our puppy is 11 months old and isn't ready to have free-rein of the house while we're at work; so, he goes to doggy daycare twice a week, and the other three days a week my husband and I trade off who sacrifices their lunch break to come home and play with the pup. We hope to not have to do this when the baby is born, but it's something on our mind - we may need someone home all day to tend to the baby, as well as walk our dog and keep him entertained on his non-doggy-daycare days.
So... sorry for the novel... but here are my questions:
- Do you use or have you considered using nanny care over a daycare facility? Which did you go with / are you going with, and why?
- What facets of your daily life made you choose one over the other?
- If you use a nanny, how long do you intend to use them for? Do you ever intend to eventually use a daycare facility? How were you able to justify the significant cost difference (from what I can tell, it can be at least quadruple the cost to have a nanny vs using daycare, at least in my area)? What makes it worth it to you?
