Also meant to add (because I would be torturing myself with regret also) don't get stuck on the fact that you didn't set this up last summer. You didn't. Its over. You can't travel back in time and reschedule it. You're doing everything you can now in the current time and that's all that matters. And now you know going forward that these type of things are probably best dealt with asap. Dont waste your time and energy making yourself feel like crap for not doing it sooner.
You're taking action now; you're on a cancellation list, you're looking into possibly being seen by other specialists in the meantime, etc. This is how I calm myself down about stuff like this when I start getting wrapped up in "if only." I'm just trying to help you feel better about it, I hope you don't take it in any other way!
The dev pedi probably has a psychologist on their team.
It's hard to say. I know a lot of families who got meaningful behavioral help from psychologists including mine; but they're a lot less likely to get as robust an eval- it's the 10 Blind Men and the Elephant. If I had a dollar for every kid I know with ASD who saw a psychologist who missed the dx, I could take a sweet vacation.
That is a good point. I just want to make sure I'm covering all my bases.
I wish there was a "So you think your child has special needs?" checklist that tells you everything you need to do to get services.
@olivegoose it is so frustrating and hard not to get mad at yourself for not getting it set up sooner. We have been at this for almost two years trying to figure out what her real dx is and what specialists we need to see. I feel like we can only go on what we are told from clinician to clinician. But GOD I want to kick something or our old neuro and pedi for not telling us we needed to see a developmental pedi like 1.5 years ago!!!!!
