Do you really need multiple change pad covers? Can you use cheap towels or cloth that easily go in washing machine? I was thinking one proper cover then something else on top. Thoughts? billyhorrible Paging you here if you have any good advice which you often do. TIA!
I had two covers so I could throw one in the wash and we were fine. But honestly reading some of these posts makes me feel like maybe I got the super deluxe edition baby because he only peed in his diapers and the one poo-splosion we had was when he shot it across the room and hit the glider, the changing pad was untouched. So we only changed it out for weekly washes.
noeliav LOL!! I swear people use them! I don't think it's meant to be a one time thing though, as long as the baby doesn't do their business all over it you can keep re-using them. I never even knew about those pads you linked (FTM here), they seem like a great idea and much more economical.

I'll take my little guy in super deluxe edition please!
I must have seriously had like a mad pisser or something... Reading all these posts about people having only one or two waterproof covers... there was no WAY we could have gotten away with that! He shot streams all the time! The wall, the changing pad, the front of the dresser... Maybe I just suck at changing boy diapers?? Gosh... maybe I've got some skillz to brush up on for this baby boy!

@demanda88, We bought them and tried them... they didn't stay on at all. My verdict was that they didn't work and was a waste of money. I think you'd be better off draping a small cloth over it or something. (Perhaps I should listen to my own advice!)
STM's with boys...any thoughts on pee pee teepees? Waste of money or useful?
We never had them. I can't imagine they are useful. We just put a wipe there to cover him up while we did everything else, then we could just wipe the front and close the new diaper!

They don't work at all. Best thing to do is to fluff or fan the diaper a couple times and then cover the penis back up to catch the new pee. Then take the diaper off and change as usual.
And yes, we did use puppy pads to protect the changing cover when DD was tiny. We only replaced it when it got dirty. I still keep a couple in my diaper bag for on-the-go changes. At home we now use those white Bobby covers. You definitely want something waterproof though.
**edited to add that yes, girls do pee outside of their diaper. They might not pee as far as boys, but it can reach your face.
I know a lot of people use doggy pee pads. That's what I was thinking about doing too, unless people have other suggestions???
Really!?!? I'm trying to find economical solutions and the official change pad covers are pricey.
I think we have two changing pad covers. We put the liners underneath them, on top of the actual changing pad, so that they stay put better. The changing pad covers we got are on Amazon for about $9 (though I guess it would depend on which changing pad you get). A pack of 3 liners is about $13.
I think two covers is fine, assuming that you have relatively easy access to a washing machine for the pee/poop explosions. Of course, if you only had one, all it would mean is that on occasion, you would change your baby on an uncovered changing pad. Not the end of the world.
I agree with pp's on pretty much everything. I just thought of something I used to do with DS. After getting peed on quite a few times I would put a wipe over his penis and clean everywhere around first then slide a new diaper underneath then remove that wipe and clean that area. I can not tell you how many times he peed on that wipe! It saved me so many times from being peed on!! With DD I would just put a new diaper underneath the one I was changing, wipe her down then slide the used one out so there wasn't a time she didn't have a diaper under her. Has always worked for me!
Edit: I just read through the comments and saw others with the same wipe advice for boys! I wanted to hurry and post before I forgot. But seriously best tip to use for a boy! My aunt had her son pee in her mouth! She told me about it and I was horrified! So I always used a wipe!
What brands did you like the most? Pampers. Sensitive at first (I have sensitive skin so it was a precaution) then swaddlers for a long time.
What is a good amount (and what sizes) are best to start off with? Agree you'll need some newborn. I defer to others on the quantity. I also stock up at Target clearance sales; I have a great stash already and it is cheaper than the normal sales/subscription options. But the Amazon Mom thing would be convenient if you don't shop clearance a lot.
What do you consider other changing table essentials (creams, lotions, etc.)? We put some of the Wee Gallery Art Cards along the edge for baby to look at and he liked them. We just used Desitin when he had a rash, vaseline for the circ. While he wasn't mobile, I kept some hand sanitizer nearby for me.
Wipe warmer - yes or no? I'm a minority. We had one, it was a gift. I absolutely scoffed it at first but DS was born at the start of winter and in the middle of the night, it was nice to not shock him more awake with a cold wipe (which, upon experimenting, does happen). Not at all a necessity though, I wouldn't have bought one if I hadn't received it as a gift.
Any other advice you all can offer...
The cheaper alternative to puppy piddle pads are chux pads. Same thing, but without the premium price of being called a puppy pad. They're medical disposable pads that I would actually strongly recommend getting. You can get a pack of 100 on Amazon for $13. No, I didn't use them on the changing table at home, but I use them ALL the time when we are out! Public restroom changing tables gross me out to the point I didn't even want to use the changing pad that came with my diaper bag because I'd have to wash it every time and would feel gross putting it back in my bag pending washing, especially if there's spillage/mess. The chux have been so awesome for public bathrooms, back of the car changes, etc. They take up hardly any space and are super light and you can just pitch it when you're done. Well worth every penny IMO.
DS didn't have many accidents at all, so we just had two changing pad covers so I could always have a clean one. Also pee-pee tee-pees are completely worthless, the kid will knock it off immediately. (again, a gift.) Just use a washcloth or wipe.
We used pampers swaddlers and found they were the best. If we had to use another brand(someone gave us their extras in a size they were done with, etc) they always leaked, especially during the night.
But I like the huggies wipes better than pampers, they were thicker and I found i always used more when I used pampers wipes
Brands: we started out with pampers swaddlers and liked them a lot. Switched to Huggies around 3 months when DS got to his poopsplosion every day phase. For wipes, we liked Huggies better than pampers. They seemed thicker and more substantial to me. We always got the unscented/ natural kind.
Amount/ sizes: our hospital started with size 1, not NB, so we didn't use any NB till we got home. He only fit in them for 2 weeks (didn't reach the 10 lb limit but he was a chubby tummy kid!) and we ended up with a lot of unused NB diapers. This time around I will probably skip NB altogether, unless this LO is a tiny peanut.
Wipes warmer: didn't have one. In the very beginning I put the wipe on my leg or arm while I got the new diaper situated to warm up a little. As others said, I didn't want him to freak if we were out and he was used to a warm wipe.
Boys: we just put a wipe or washcloth over his penis, never a peepee teepee. It worked fine. BONUS: make sure when you put the new diaper on, you point it down, otherwise pee will escape everywhere!
Diaper pails: we got the arm and hammer one, and I actually really liked it. It dispenses baking soda and did a good job keeping the smell contained.
We also had one changing pad cover, and multiple waterproof liners like the ones linked above. We liked the boppy ones way better than the BRU brand- they shrunk up weirdly in the wash and never laid flat after the first wash.

DD was a champion pooper and still is. At 19 months she still poops 4-5 times a day; when she was younger it was much worse. Frequent poopsplosions and poop leaking out of the diaper on the clothes almost daily. DH would prefer just to take her to the sink and hose her down, literally. I became a poop laundry master. Given this much poop, having multiple pads, covers, cloths on top seemed like NBD.
