I woke up to the sounds of the loudest 'thud' accompanied by screams this morning. Sadie decided to throw herself out of her crib. Kid just got her cast off a week ago! And her leg still isn't right. I can only imagine having to explain all of this to the pedi next week at her check up.
All of this long rant to ask: Have you transitioned into any kind of bedding other than crib? Ours will convert so I think we may do that this afternoon.
Yup. Lando had been trying to climb out for a while. I'd see him on the baby monitor putting his leg up on the side and trying to get over (he's pretty tall for 18 months). I'm due with #2 in April, so in late January when my husband had to go out of town for a trip I transitioned him (there is a sofa bed in his new room that I slept in for the first week). We moved him to a new room and to a toddler bed (so I could leave the crib/nursery set up for the new baby). I didn't feel like he was ready for a twin bed yet, and the bed I have has short sides that are easy for him to climb out of but prevent him from falling out: www.walmart.com/ip/21264411?wmlspartner=wmtlabs&adid=22222222222015582349&veh=sem (and pirate themed so it is SUPER cute).
So far it has worked out really well for us. I've been shocked. The hardest part is actually getting him to sit still and in bed long enough to fall asleep. But once he's out, then he's out for the night (he's only woken up once in the middle of the night since the transition). When he wakes up in the morning he just comes to our bedroom - maybe a little earlier than when we would have gotten him in his crib but not crazy early.. and I think once he figures out he can just play with his toys instead of coming to wake us up he may start doing that (but we'll see). We have all the bedrooms in the upstairs of our house, so we just have the stairwell blocked with a baby gate. That way I know he's not exploring the house alone in the middle of the night. There is a bathroom on the floor, but I just lock it from the outside every night so I know he can't get in trouble there (he's learned how to flush and turn on the faucet, so that was the one thing I was afraid of him playing with). He hasn't wanted to go back into his old room once since we made the transition!
I know we've had it super easy. We'll see if he stays sleeping thorugh the night when the new baby gets here. Good luck.
I dont know that shes necessarily ready to transition to the toddler bed but I cant have her breaking another body part. I think we're going to give it a shot and layer some memory foam rugs all around it just in case.
They move furniture too much for me to be comfortable. I would need to anchor everything to a wall. Our house is old and their door doesn't shut all the way. The stairs are gated, but there are too many other things for them to get into.
Closer to 3yo is the goal. That's when we transitioned the big one and it went seamlessly.

So have you tried? If so, how'd it go?
We did! Shes been in ber converted bed for a few weeks now and is doing great! She can get in by herself but she'll crawl to the edge and wait for someone to come pick her up in the mornings. So far she hasn't learned to get out. But I know its just a matter of time. The first few nights she would wake up a handful of times but usually got herself back to sleep. No complaints.... so far.
We're hoping to make the transition once baby arrives (any day now). He's so big that I honestly have trouble lifting him over the rail to the mattress with any kind of finesse. Last weigh in was 40 pounds.....
