Joel can get in and out of the high chair on his own. Having always been huge, he's now 38 pounds and 34" tall. We are deciding between a better locking high chair or some kind of booster seat. What is everyone else doing? Or when will you look for high chair alternatives?
E is still such a little thing, so we still in a high chair, both at home, and out to eat. Though we went to Texas Roadhouse, and they put us in a booth. Usually we get a booth high chair, but instead the guy brought me a booster seat. Much to my surprise, she did very well in it though it would not be something I use all the time yet.
I sadly dont have any other advice but good luck in your search
We're still in a high chair. Although I admit that the past few times we've gone out ultimately resulted in us holding S in our laps. We are in full fledged terrible 2s

Wubby's still going strong in the el cheapo Ikea highchair. I'm debating whether we'll move to the booster soon or keep using the chair but maybe pull it up to the table since it's roughly table height. We'll probably make a decision after we move though, it may not work as well with a different table. I'm not sure if it would work for you. It can't really be gotten in and out of easily because if its design, but the safety straps aren't great, I'm constantly readjusting them because they get loose.
Cyril has been out of his highchair for quite a while now. The "booster seat" we use still has straps so he cant jump out or anything, but it allows him to sit on a regular chair and have his food on the table like us (which he loves). I originally bought it for travelling but we transitioned it to every day use.
danib, can you send me a link to the kind you're using? Most of what I have seen looks so low! Thanks!

We go between using a high chair and booster seats when out at restaurants. LO sits very nicely when she's next to us in a booth but I wouldn't try it on a chair. I'm actually wanting to buy a little table and chair set for her to use at home. She always eats before us, way early bedtime, so I would just sit and snack with her.
We use a fisher price booster without the tray: booster
He can't climb into it himself yet, but he's started to try. And he likes that it is just on a chair that we tuck under the table so he feels like he's sitting with us all.
I still use the high chair every once in a while if he's hungry and I'm still finishing stuff up in the kitchen, but since we're trying to do dinner as a family every night this is happening less and less.
