I have volunteered to take over the MSPI/food allergy checkins here. I hope everyone is okay with that. Does anyone have a preference for day of the week? I was thinking Monday's, but wanted to make sure no one has any objections. I figure we can jump in this week, and re-adjust the days next week.
Here's a quick wk 1 checkin:
1. Brief intro/re-intro of yourself and food avoidance situation. And how old is your LO?
2. How is your LO tolerating your diet now?
3. How long do you plan to BF?
4. New recipes, substitutions, or MSPI/allergy friendly products you have tried?
1. Brief intro/re-intro of yourself and food avoidance situation. And how old is your LO?
My son is 12 mos, and has allergies to milk, egg, peanut, and tree nuts. Diagnosed at 5mos when he had hives for 3 months straight when EBF, plus crazy reflux, green mucusy poops, and congestion. We managed to stick with BF and the hives stopped. And his weight is great now!
2. How is your LO tolerating your diet now?
Great! Only reactions are when there is cross contamination when he eats solids. I have recently been able to add baked egg into my diet, and I am thrilled!
3. How long do you plan to BF?
That's on my mind a lot lately. I want to go until 2, but also want to get pregnant with #2, and don't quite have a good vision for weaning. I also am nervous to transition to soy milk when it seems that breastmilk is so much healthier...
4. New recipes, substitutions, or MSPI/allergy friendly products you have tried?
I was so proud of myself for making cupcakes and awesome frosting for A's 1yr bday, and people liked them. At least they didn't complain! The chocolate ones turned out the best.
Hi all! My DS is almost 3 and has outgrown his MSPI (+other intolerances) but I will try to remember to check in here on Mondays to help if I can! Also the blog where all TB MSPI check in posts (at least until I handed over the reins) is linked in my siggy - lots of useful info there! mooncharm I am impressed you were able to make yummy MSPI bday cupcakes! DS hated his avocado frosting, haha!
1) I have two kids breastfeeding--daughter is almost 3, she can't have cows milk. My son is 15 months, he can't have cows milk or egg... For a while he couldn't have soy either. I also pump/donate to a baby girl who can't have cows milk and also formerly couldn't have soy.
2) It's okay... I'm not excellent at avoiding things.. If I couldn't have (milk) chocolate, I might as well die. My daughter is fine with small weaknesses of mine, my son, not so much. I have finally given in, though, and have an allergy appointment scheduled for tomorrow afternoon for a scratch test. Even when I'm perfect at avoiding, my son had never had soft newborn baby skin.
3) at my current rate, forever.
4) for the kids that can eat soy but no milk, Asian food is generally safe and easy to get a hold of.
1. Brief intro/re-intro of yourself and food avoidance situation. And how old is your LO? Hi everyone. I'm here mostly to support others. Leah is 18m old. At 8m, she was diagnosed with severe egg allergy ... plusalso milk, treenut, peanut, fish, shellfish, banana, and strawberry. It took giving solids to make the allergies really come out, and then her poor body just threw reactions every which way. In retrospect, we had a milk issue the whole time, but she was so easygoing that she never showed us how distressed she was. By 12m, she had outgrown many of the issues and allergist supported slow reintro of many foods.
At 18m, we are egg- and tree-nut free. But, fish and shellfish are fine. She is tolerating yogurt, cheese, and butter but does not do well with WCM (skin reactions, tummy troubles). We recheck this spring.
2. How is your LO tolerating your diet now? Making progress. We just discovered that she seems to tolerate me having small bits of baked egg (like in a cookie). She doesn't do well if I have Whey shakes.
3. How long do you plan to BF? As long as she'd like. I expect she'll self-wean sometime between tomorrow and when she goes to kindergarten.
4. New recipes, substitutions, or MSPI/allergy friendly products you have tried? Our allergy issues helped me clean up our diets quite a bit. Hummus and pita chips were my favorite (look out for soy, tho).
Thanks @rocknrollfriend. I worked hard to find a good recipe. Not sure it it was soy free, but actually one of them was. I had an awesome mint chocolate frosting and chocolate cupcake. The vanilla and spice cupcakes did have soy. I can look for the recipe later if anyone needs it.
1. Brief intro/re-intro of yourself and food avoidance situation. And how old is your LO? DS is 16 months old. At 4 months I realized something was wrong. I tried an elimination diet. I discovered milk, soy, tree nuts and peanuts. At 9 months I fed him some egg and he had a bad reaction. We were sent for allergy testing. He is allergic to milk, soy, wheat, egg, tree nuts, peanuts and shellfish. He outgrew rice and oats at 14 months.
2. How is your LO tolerating your diet now? I try really hard not to mess up. He cries in his sleep from his stomach sometimes and he has never had smooth skin. He is still getting something he shouldn't but I can't figure out where. He goes to DC, it's hard to keep him from all contact. He has a bad skin reaction to milk. As was proven last week when one of the kids threw her milk at him.
3. How long do you plan to BF? I don't know. It is wearing me down. However, He is a milk monster so probably for awhile.
4. New recipes, substitutions, or MSPI/allergy friendly products you have tried? Enjoy life has a chocolate sun butter bar that I ordered from Amazon that was very very good!
Hi ladies I am also new to the BF board and boards in general. Hope I can join you!
1. Brief intro/re-intro of yourself and food avoidance situation. And how old is your LO?
DD is 18 months and we have been dealing with a dairy allergy from the beginning. She also had a intolerance to beef and soy but thankfully that went away at 12 or 13 months She was EBF until 6 months.
2. How is your LO tolerating your diet now?
She is doing well as long as I don't have any dairy. Even 1 tsp of butter on toast gives her a rash, diarrhea and upset stomach.
3. How long do you plan to BF?
I wanted to make it to 1 year, now I want to continue until she can have dairy. DD will only drink breast milk and water.
4. New recipes, substitutions, or MSPI/allergy friendly products you have tried?
To make sure I don't accidentally slip up I subscribe to Sunfare meal delivery. I was too sleep deprived initially to try and cook acceptable meals so this was the best option.
