Intro and question (XP from A14)

Hello all - On the bump I've been mostly on WM; I lurked on parenting posted and posted a little.  I got great advice over there, and I'd love to join you guys if you don't mind me butting in. 

Regarding me: I'm a working mom with 2 kids - a 3 year old DS and 10 month old DD. I'm lazy and messy and love my DH, my kids, and my job. DH and I are wannabe foodies and love to travel although we haven't gotten to do that much.

That's me. If it's ok I also figured I'd start with a question since my BMB over here seems quiet. I think people are trying to figure out where they are. 


So I went to pick up my kid at 130am and it was dark; I thought I was picking her up by the armpits and instead I had her by the hips-i had picked her up and was holding her upside down.
After I realized she was ok, I started thinking that maybe I needed to buy a sleep training book or some such. Biggest problem I have, I think, is that she's still in the room with us and no nursery. We actually have a sizeable house - I have a 4 bedroom - but my sister and her daughter are living with us until May.


What books do I need to read before attempting sleep training and how would you logistically do it with our set up?

The Sleep Lady Shuffle is a very well regarded sleep training book/method on my old BMB but I'm not sure it works for you with your current situation. Is it the 3 year old or the 10 mo old you're having issues with?

We did Ferber with DD at 9 months but she has been in her room since she was about 2-3 months. It took 3 rough days but really only the 1st night was really rough. We'll do it again with DS in a few months if needed.

DD just turned one. I bought and read The No Cry Sleep Solution and that did not work for us...DD is too dang stubborn (even at 6 months). We ended up doing Ferber around 7 months and it worked great. My DD is too stubborn for anything else. 1st night she cried for 30ish min, 2nd night 15 min and 3rd night 2 min. Now, if she's crying for more than like 10 min we know something is up - teething, sick, etc. If nothing is wrong, usually she cries for 10 min and then she's back asleep.

Also heard good things about The Sleep Lady Shuffle and Happy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child.

Hi and welcome!!

Definitely read up on the various methods so you know the pros/cons on doing it at certain ages (some kids aren't developmentally ready and/or might be going through a phase that could sabatage your efforts, which might make you think sleep-training isn't working) AND what to expect regarding how most children respond.

I did straight up CIO with both kids at 7mos. After about 3 days of no naps (they cried all the way through them), early bedtimes where they cried for about an hour (each day was a little less crying), both finally "got it" and there was no more crying. My oldest had her own room so that was no problem. The youngest was in our room so we just had to sneak in to go to bed ourselves once he was asleep. Around 9-10pm.

A sound machine really helped us be able to sleep in the same room with him as it blocked out all noises that would disturb us. A loud one with white noise is what we use.

Thanks for all the responses. It's the 10 month old. Basically she is waking up 2x per night minimum. I can understand that she might go to sleep and wake up early - 5am or so - but I'd like to eliminate the 1am wake ups. 

It often goes: Sleep at 6pm-6:30pm then wakes; Sleeps from 8:30pm to 1am; and Sleeps again from 2am to 4:30am and wakes. Somtimes at 1am I can get her down in 30 minutes, sometimes it's an hour.  Occasionally it's longer and those are the days that really suck.

Check out the GTKY on WM (the oldest one from last week). We ventured into sleep training and there is some good advice there as well.

We did No Cry Sleep Solution. DS is stubborn and his crying would escalate, not wane.
