Paging @marlasinger:
Here's my quick review from our brewery tours this past weekend. We started off at Port City, which is very unassuming from the outside. The atmosphere inside was really lively though. Plenty of seating, and a very young, hip crowd. I think the brewery tour tickets were only $10? You get 5 tastings (plus a bonus free one on the tour). Our tour guide was very charming and knowledgeable, tour lasted maybe half an hour. There's no food available inside the actual brewery, but they did have a BBQ food truck outside. We didn't eat any, but it smelled wonderful. The whole experience felt very local, very personable, and fun. Optimal Wit, Tidings, and Downright Pilsner were my favorites. They have tons of IPA's, which I'm not a fan of. One of the better brewery tours I've been on.
Would definitely go again!
We drove out to Falls Church afterwards to eat dinner at Mad Fox brewery. There's a restaurant on one side, very long bar on the other. They only do tours the first Saturday of each month, so can't comment on that. Biggest complaint... they were out of several different beers, including the two we were specifically there to drink. They did have a reasonably priced sampler flight of what they did have on tap though. The only one I really enjoyed was the saison, can't remember the name at the moment however. There were TONS of families with very small children there for dinner, which was a bit off putting. Food was amazing though. They specialize in pizza. The pork belly appetizers were to die for as well. We moved to the bar after dinner. Service was HORRIBLE! The bartenders all acted like they were so annoyed to be there and did more shuffling around behind the bar, pretending to look busy, than actually serving people. I had a hard cider with a shot of Fireball added. Overall, not that impressed. I probably won't go back to Mad Fox.
Next on our list of breweries to tour are Dogfish Head in Gaithersburg, Franklins in Hyattsville, and Heavy Seas in Rosslyn. Cheers!
