meow84, I agree to a point. I don't mind giving my kid a few options at dinner. She is just like us and sometimes she is not in the mood for certain foods. However, I will never get to the point of making two completely separate meals.
I also hate the clean your plate mentality. I think it forces kids to over eat and sets up bad habits down the road.
I agree to an extent. It's why I always put very small portions on J's plate to start and if she wants more to eat she will ask for more or for something else. But then I don't feel bad asking her to eat more (not all) when I know for a fact she's only taken 2 bites off of her plate, total.
Last night for example, I gave her 1 (just one!) slice of turkey, some corn, and grapes (we had steak, potatoes which she HATES, and corn). I offered her a piece of steak and she took it off her plate, ok no biggie. She ate her grapes and like 2 bites of corn and then started asking for cereal. I told her no.
She needed to eat her turkey, which she chose over a PB sammy, and a little more corn, THEN she could have the cereal she wanted (she's been on a serious cereal jive lately). Last night she must have really wanted cereal - she ate all of her turkey in like 2 minutes and had 2 more bites of corn. Then I gave her a snack cup with cereal for finishing her dinner. Sure she didn't finish her corn, which she usually devours, but she finished her turkey like I asked... and I knew she was hungry and just wanting cereal instead but I won't feed her cereal all day, every day!
