Hello Everyone!
I am having a real hard time with DS's sleep. He was sleeping through the night and without help when he turned 1 1/2. But ever since he turned two-ish (he got a bad cold), his sleep has been horrible. I've tried everything I've have read and nothing works. Naptime and bedtime has become a horrible battle. I have a bedtime routine but every time we start it, DS gets the clue and starts fighting me in every way. The only way to get him to sleep at night is by rocking him but with his weight, my back is killing me throughout the day now. It takes him almost 3 hours to get him to sleep when I rock him. At minimum, maybe 1 hour. 2 hours and 45 minutes at most.
This is what we've tried:
CIO - Ferber
CIO - Extinction
The Super Nanny Method
The No-Cry Sleep Solution by Elizabeth Pantley for the rocking to sleep association
Every single one has been a fail. With both of the CIO methods, me and DH couldn't handle it and had to quit. He would cry, scream, throw a tantrum, kick the door repeatedly. He's been in a toddler bed since he turned a year maybe. He transitioned quite well and slept great in it until this all started.
With the super nanny, it just wore me out! At first I would just lay by him on his bed with him crying because I would refuse to rock him. Then after the first couple nights, the crying started to calm down. So, we went to the next phase where you sit by the bed and soothe him from there. Every time he would get up, I would lay him back down and tell him its bedtime and that I was right here. I had to stop after like 2 nights into that phase because it just wasn't happening and nothing was improving.
With the no cry, I would rock him but place him down every time he started to close his eyes. Which worked actually, but after I laid him down for like the thousandth time. (which was like 2 1/2 hours into bed time which kills my back).
Now, that I've wrote this out, I'm thinking maybe I haven't been giving the methods time to work? Does anyone have any advice?
Please?
Update::::
Hello ladies and thank you everyone for your advice! I am happy to say that DS has gotten better about nighttime. I've been trying to keep the whole bedtime a positive experience but have been firm with him concerning bedtime is bedtime. I started limiting how much time I rock and I'm slowly decreasing it every 2 days. Also, we are cutting his afternoon nap out since his nap has gotten later and later in the afternoon! Which is a bummer, but I feel like it will help him fall asleep sooner and better for all of us in the long run. I tried the bedtime sticker chart, but I feel like I'm going to have to modify it a bit since stickers don't seem to phase him much.
