Have I created a monster? Will my baby ever go back to her crib? The cuddles are great, don't get me wrong - but tiptoeing around in the morning trying to get ready is hard work.
Last night was the second night of a little oatmeal cereal - LO is 5 months today - and she loves it. She's grabbing the spoon on her own and shoving it in her mouth (which results in it all over her face).
I think the same thing about having created a monster! Baby goes to sleep great in the bassinet for the first stretch of the night, but when she wakes up, she will. not. go back to sleep unless she is laying beside me. I can spend an hour and a half trying (with mixed success) to get her asleep in her bed, or I can bring her into mine and she's out in a minute. Monster?
I gave baby a little bit of avocado last night! She made the funniest faces, drooled all over, and then accidentally ate it. She did not try for more. This eating thing could be slow-going for us.
I constantly get comments like, "Oh she hasn't missed any meals," and "You can tell she eats good!" I know it's wonderful that she's healthy, and I'm eternally grateful for that- but they're basically saying she's a chubster!
Yup, I have that monster, too. I just know eventually he won't need to sleep with us. Will it be 5 years from now? Maybe. But I do try not to get him into our bed till after 4 am. Sometimes he's in bed most nights with us, but he's never slept a whole night without coming into our bed. Maybe by the time we are done with kids we will just have two king sized beds pushed together to fit them all. lol.
I'm enjoying trying out this food stuff. So far we have tried a bit of banana, avocado and oatmeal. I have a sweet potato I'm going to steam up and mash today and try that too. Super cute that he grabs the spoon and shovels it in himself. Basically I eat dinner while he plays around with food. I hand him the spoon between my bites and he just plays and enjoys and almost all of it actually stays in. I'm shooting for hunks of food at 6 months.
zengal, ugh, I hate when people call Liam fat. He's a baby, like really? we can't get away from weight even at that age?? Someone even told us "wow, he looks like he's going to be stocky. Where does he get it? you both are rail thin" Umm, he's 5 months old. lol We are 30+. Not quite the same.
We've been feeding cereals and purées for a week now. He started on rice cereal for 3-4 days, then avocado. Today he will have some sweet potato. LO cries when you take a bottle away from him before it is gone. He makes that same cry between spoonfuls of food. He is still working on being able to move it around with his tongue. He mostly just sucks it off the spoon.

+1 to the baby monster club. I have held Pips to put her to sleep every single night since she came home from the hospital with the exception of about three times when she went down drowsy. Which she hasn't done for ages, and is still refusing. I'm not overly worried though.
Also, re: chubby babies A friend at work is pregnant and her BF's family actually told her that they were honestly, truly worried that her baby would be fat because he whole family is overweight. WTAF?! Even if you think something like that, who actually says that out loud?
Heading to work for a short four hours today. DH has two job interviews this week. He has to drive to the tri-city area in Washington tomorrow for one. And has a phone interview for a cattle ranch in Montana on Saturday. They are two completely opposite operations. One is a city boy looking to start a cattle ranch that DH would have to build from the ground up, the other is a 5th generation run ranch. There are pros and cons to both, so I have my fingers crossed that either one comes through. But it would mean DH going away for two or three months and feeling out the job before Pips and I move.
gldnbearz Gerber Oatmeal Single Grain mixed with some formula and warmed.
sjp03 My LO does the same thing between spoonfuls!
Re: chubby babies. I own one of those, and people love to comment on her chubbiness. It doesn't bother me on the first or second reference, but if they keep going on and on it gets old.
So far I have been cold called and visited by two people selling supplemental insurance and one guy walking in wanting to seal coat our parking lot. Dude would not take no for answer. At this rate, I'm not going to get a thing done today! Except eat pistachios and chat online, lol.
I also have a chubby monster. zengal I'll also be having to nurse my teenager to sleep haha.
MrsAdventure good luck to your husband I hope he finds a job that fits him and your family great.
That's so exciting about all the food LO's are trying! I still haven't given C any and she turned 5 months yesterday, probably soon! Sorry I've been MIA lately. Things have been crazy busy, husband had to get stitches on his thumb, Sunday worked from 7am-4am and then left the house at 6am for another 12 hour shift. Then last night I had a fever of 101.8 and woke up drenched in sweat. I'm stubborn and came into work because my temp was only 99.4 this morning. Stupid me. On a good note LO slept from 7:30-7 and only woke up once at 3 something. But that makes me worried she's sick too, even though she doesn't have a fever and is super happy. Ugh. Is it the weekend yet?
Can't believe our babies are getting old enough for solids!! Norah has had oatmeal, bananas, sweet potatoes, avocados, and she's just tried pears today. She likes avocado and banana (though the latter binds her up a bit so we've been avoiding it), LOVES pears, and isn't sure about the texture of sweet potato lol. Doing purées now but might try BLW as she crosses the 6 month mark.

I'm in the same boat, in that my LO usually comes to bed with us at some point early in the morning. To be fair though, its not because he particularly wants to, its usually because I have no patience to stay awake and nurse him. Especially when I have to be up for work at 5:50 am every day. So its more of a convenience for me. He has stayed in his crib all night, it's just been awhile. As for the fat babies comments, oi! Those annoy me to no end. My mom and DH keep saying LO's thighs are big. Seriously, just stop. The kid is far from chubby and even if he was why must people point that out? Also I'm dying over this comment zengal "Apparently we'll all have fat teenagers sleeping in our arms and beds " MrsAdventure - Good luck to your DH!! Hope he gets the best fit for you all!!
Update on Day 1 of Operation "Take a Friggin' Bottle Kid" went well, I nursed him for a few minutes yesterday then unlatched him and stuck a bottle in his mouth. He took it with no complaints. My BIL also said he took a little bit of the bottle this morning before falling asleep. I went so far yesterday as to take the temperature of my BM as soon as I pumped so I'd know what temp he likes it at (am I ridiculous? Probably!)
ninergirl52 I'm glad you're having success with bottle feeding! I think it's heinous you took the temp right after pumping. I would have never thought of that!

I have a monster, but no chubs. My mousie has little chicken legs!!! He used to STTN with just one wake up at 3:30. Now he goes down in his crib from about 9-12 and is up around every hour or two after that. DH and I are taking turns going to bed early so both of us aren't zombies.
We've been giving him purees, rice and oatmeal since 4mo with ped's blessing but over the weekend we gave him some frozen banana in a silicone feeder. It made a mess but he went nutso for it.
For cereal we went with Gerber, but for purees we have done Gerber, Plum and Earth's Best. Mixing the brands seems to have better variety for allergy testing. I started with the basics in Gerber and added ones that are mixed with what he's had already, so when I knew he was ok with Gerber apples and pears I gave him a Plum brand Apple/Pear/Broccoli blend.
Stuff he's had so far: Squash Peas Carrots Green Beans Sweet Potato Apple Pear Peach Prune Blueberry (only thing he had a reaction to, little pimples on face and will try again if doc says we should) Broccoli Garbanzo Beans
No meats yet but I did puree some boiled chicken with apple and broccoli and froze it for future use. I'll be honest though it was gross, tasted dry after being pureed.
littleapplemom I just checked out the link. I think that is the same company that makes the grass drying rack? They are so ingenious! I'm going to have to get that feeder thing!!

Lol I think about the creating a monster thing too! Funny how we all feel the same way. I've just accepted it and feel like as long as I have a solid routine in the beginning of the night, everything will just happen naturally as she gets older. Or maybe I'm just in la la land, which I'm ok with lol
Post by littleapplemom on Apr 21, 2015 13:36:11 GMT -5
zengal, It is the same company. I was looking into the mesh ones from munchkin but reviews said they were a pain to clean and the food would get stuck in all the little holes, dry and become gross old food dust. The silicone was really easy to clean (pops apart in three pieces) and easy for him to hold too. You can only really put mushy things in it though, the handle part has a knobby piece that fits into the silicone to help push the food out. It's not just a empty cup.
Monster?

Me. Too. It annoys the crap out of me, and people better stop soon because I'm not cool with people calling my daughter fat. I have gotten just enough of these comments that the next person to make one is going to get an earful. BABIES ARE SUPPOSED TO BE CHUBBY, PEOPLE.
We had a bit of success going, maybe one or two wake ups, sleeping in the pack and play next to me. But...he got a cold, then he got his shots, so for about 2 weeks, it has been a bit if a nightmare. He will sometimes go into his bed at bedtime, for maybe an hour. Then he is up, sometimes screaming at the top of his lungs. I think he is teething, so I don't want to be tough on him and force the issue, so he has been coming into bed. It is bad, I worry about safety and creating a habit. I just don't have the fight in me to push through in the middle of the night. Don't get me wrong, we give a good college try, rocking, singing, changing, walking around, then back to his own bed, but it is scream city every time. My H and I have been taking turns, so some nights aren't too bad, but some, like last night, are TERRIBLE. Try to remember that this is a phase, but has anyone gone through this, and how did it resolve? He is a little over 4 months.
My family loves to comment how big he is, but he is solidly 50%. My nephew was tiny, so they always compare. Annoying!
I am thinking of doing homemade oatmeal cereal. Didn't want to start solids this early, but he is still refusing the bottle at daycare, and I have been unable to gain any freedom due to my H worrying he will be fussy if I'm gone.
millm0m add me to the monster baby group I WFH most days And am terrible about letting him cry with the nanny (like when he is going down for naps) I usually only last a couple minutes before I go grab him and walk or nurse him to sleep...I just nursed him to sleep for the third time today! I also bring him to bed with me after the first MOTN wake up because I am too tired to do anything else! I don't know many teenagers who need to be rocked or nursed to sleep so I think we are just fine. I am actually a lot more relaxed about it than I used to be (I don't have enough energy left at the end of the day to worry about it)
We haven't started foods yet but will when he turns 6 months next month!
zengal I also get a lot of those comments! Max is over 20 pounds at 5 months old so it is inevitable. What gets me are the people who say "well missing a few meals won't hurt him" when I tell them he refuses a bottle when I have to leave for work. No it doesn't hurt him but it can't be fun to be hungry for 10-12 hours and it definitely isn't fun for Mommy to think about.
@mtsadventure11 Good luck to your H I hope he gets the perfect job!
ninergirl52 I am following Operation take a Friggin Bottle Kid because I am in the same boat. I just need to be better about pumping and giving the bottle when I am home (I'm lazy because nursing is so much easier) work is getting crazy and is going to be crazy through the end of the year so so need to get with the program!
I am ready for a vacation! My stress levels are out of control. All I want to do is snuggle my sweet boy.

Sorry I haven't been on ladies. I am getting into the swing of my new job. Which I absolutely love by the way! I hope this can be my forever work home lol.
As for chubby babies- I have one too but he is healthy and happy. I love his little chubby thighs and cheeks. Sometimes I jokingly say look at all those "jerry rolls". It's an inside joke from South Park that me and DH say. Cartman says it to Butters during the Subway episode. We always laughed at it. My birthday and our wedding anniversary are next month. I told DH that all I want is a really nice picnic at our favorite park. Complete with wine cocktails for me and fancy food. I am weird I know.
npg1982 I'm so sorry your LO is screaming! We don't have that issue, but I hear you when you say you don't want to fight the issue in the motn. I think the consensus is you do what works -- and don't pass judgment on yourself!

zengal- I want to try avocado too. How did you get it so mushy? It cam be tough to break down. @jjh119- Wow to oatmeal! What type and chunks at 6 mos is a good goal. sjp03- Are you trying solids daily? @mrsadventure1- good luck to your H! Hope he gets the one he wants! sadie74- I hope you feel better soon. Fevers are the worst! aluzitano- Are you making the purees yourself? If so, any challenges you have come accross? ninergirl52- not crazy at all. I swear I would do the same. littleapplemom- We can do beans?! I have so many cans on hand at all times. I want to try this! Do you use a bullet? npg1982-hugs lady, hoping you get a good night of rest soon

songbirdsinging55 he's on that one now, tonight is the 4th night trying them. We do 4 days/nights in a row with each item. I think it's an Earth's best pouch, sweet potato/barley/garbanzo. I do have a bullet, that's what I used to pulverize the chicken.

Yep... totally creating a monster over here too. I finally got him to start taking naps (albeit maybe 30 minute naps) in his crib. But they just started building a house next to ours. It's right outside of his window . so we are back to me holding him for his naps because he will at least stay asleep this way. Ugh! We haven't fed L any real food yet but I am so excited!!!! Maybe we'll try a little something in a few days. MrsAdventure, good luck to your H and his interviews! sadie74, I hope your LO sttn because she's awesome and not sick... baby colds=not fun! npg1982, Hope your LO starts sleeping better. The 4 month sleep regression turned our life upside down so I can commiserate. The worst was right before he started it he had like 4 nights that he sttn.... Knife through the heart.
