See, this is why I love you guys, I didn't even know this was a thing. First, I doubt he will spend too much time at the hospital with us since we live a couple minutes away and all grandparents are here. But I like the build a bear idea. I'm wondering how he would handle making one but not keeping it. He is still very egocentric and has no idea what it means that he will be having a baby brother. He may not like having to give it away. Maybe I could just have him make two?

Gage got Ellison an elephant. Surprisingly he makes sure she has it. He loves that he gave her, her first present. It also helped break the ice. He was 2.5 when she was born and he was a little confused on where my belly went. It also helped that she got lots of gifts. A lot of sweet people brought him little things. No matter how you cut it a 2 year old gets a little jealous if the baby gets all the presents. He also opened all of her presents for her. It was actually really cute, he would take it over and show her. I bet he would suprise you if you made a big deal about being the babies first toy/present.

I knew I'd be in the hospital for 4 days so we had a small gift for each day. We also lived an hour away so she was staying with my sister. They each got a Cabbage Patch doll. It was a big sister/little sister set. We also got DD#1 some jewelry, doll stroller and a Chugginton remote control train. She was 22m at the time. The gifts made her feel special and gave her something to do while she visited. She still plays with all the toys 3yrs later too.
The gifts were meant to make her feel special. I wanted her to get as much attention as Avery.
In regards to the dumptruck mentioned above, we were at the park a couple of weeks ago and Jack always brings sandbox toys which includes a Tonka Digger and a little girl came over and played with it for a very long time. Her dad came over to me and said he never thought to get her trucks but she was really into the digger.
Not to highjack the thread, but I wish more people WOULD think to get girls cars and trucks for gifts! I was really happy when my friends (both engineers) gave J 2 small caterpillar trucks for her birthday (along with a Minnie movie), she loves those things (or did before they got stuck in storage)! She also has a fire truck my mom gave her for Christmas 2 years ago because she was obsessed with the fire trucks/station across the street from our apartment. She loves playing with that stuff too! Full circle back to the gender stereotype thread we had a week ago....
For her birthday this year I told H she should get a lawn mower, and a tool bench/tool box - because she loves helping with the hammer and screwdriver!
We got E one of these tool boxes last summer and she loves it. She hammers, nails, screws thing in etc. It is a great toy.
I also won't have E at the hospital much. Maybe an hour a day. I am hoping to be in the hospital for 1 (not more than 2 nights) then leave. So far I got E a heart bracelet that the new "baby" will give her. I am going to get a book/toy as well but not sure exactly what........
