He has been sitting for a couple weeks and can now reach for stuff and if he starts tipping he can usually right himself before he topples. He is almost 6 months.
If I sit with her on my lap (like if I'm on the couch), she can sit up without my hands on her torso because I use my legs to counter balance her as she goes. But she still does the backwards lurch. I am going to set my nursing pillow up for her when we get home to see if that helps her figure it out.

Samsies He just started rolling belly to back but he definitely prefers sitting
Eta: I still put the boppy pillow around him when I walk away for a bit
DD was trying really hard. Now she won't even sit when I prop her up on the couch. She leans back until her butt slides out and she is lying down. The only time she tries to sit is when she's on her lap facing me, but even then she lurches backwards sometimes and I have to catch her.

I walk away and just wait for DS1 to come tell me he fell over. I make sure there are no sharp objects around him. But if he tips he just gets on his belly and scoots around by army crawling. He really wants to get around with his brother.
My DD sits by herself for like 30-45 seconds max. She's really made a lot of progress within this past week though. Before that she would just topple over. Crazy how fast they learn a new trick!

Nope. Only propped up on the couch and he does really well in his summer infant chair, but not unassisted. Ever since we introduced the jumperoo though he is much more interested in standing up than anything!
My girl sits up she can do one to two min on the off chance a bit more then she slumps forward or sideways. Today while putting on her bunting she was doing baby crunches trying to get up it was hilarious. Also is she is supported against a surface such as a cushion she will push up and sit up.
LO just turned 5 months, and I think her record is 11 seconds unsupported. Just long enough for a picture! She also gets distracted, leans too far, and ends up on her tummy.
She can tripod sit for a little bit. If she could balance, she could do it. She's super close, though. It is how she prefers to be so she can see all that DS is doing.

We are getting there. If you prop her up she may stay for a minute or two. But she leans towards whatever she's interested in, so if the dog walks by, she topples
She can for a little bit. 6 months on the 29th. She can right herself if she does not go too far in any direction. If she leans forward to pull her socks off she can stay sitting for a little longer, very intent on getting those socks off and into her mouth. Eventually she will reach for something that is too far away and topple over.
She's fine if I sit her up or if she's sitting in my lap. She's no where close to being able to go from laying down to sitting up. She is desperately trying to, though.

DS has been sitting for a few weeks now. But I think his primary motivation is so he can play with the "big boys" at day care. They really worked with him on sitting. I think if he was just home with me - he wouldn't be doing much of anything.
Who has babies sitting up? I've been trying to work with LO but she just stiffens her body until I help her stand up.
Seriously, she doesn't even know how great her life would be if she could sit up.
Same! DS would rather stand than sit. He also tries to crawl instead of rolling over. He's a mess. He'll sit up for about 10 seconds if I spread his legs apart.
