Hi all, I intro'd right before TB imploded. I am a new Mommy to a sweet little boy, and have been a reg (under this SN and SouthernYankeeGirl) on 3T, PAIF, and Jan15 for awhile now.
My little guy took to breastfeeding like a champ - he favored a side, but I realized he had a stuffy nose and some suction and humidifier cleared that up. I have an abundant supply. He was 7lb5oz at birth, 7lb3oz upon check out, and 7lb3oz at his first pedi apt two days later. A week later, he had gained 11oz! So he's thriving.
My concern comes from poop. He poops constantly. Like we change before and after every feeding, and often we hear the tell tale squish an hour or so after eating. We're often mid-diaper change and he starts pooping again. And he seems miserable while pooping, cries and howls like it hurts. He's had some redness that A&D seems to have helped. But we are talking 20 diapers a day perhaps!
I called the pedi and waiting on a call back. But is there a diet change for me I should consider? Or is this normal?
That sounds pretty normal. Poop and BF babies can get super weird though! From experience, we saw both ends of the pooping. DS was just like your LO for a long time. Constantly pooping. Then one day, around 3 months....the poop was GONE. He would go once every 7-9 days. I was in contact with my pedi and everything was fine, but I am a FTM and was very concerned.
All that too say - try not to stress. It seems normal. Hang in there!
My LO is a pooper for sure - he usually goes 5 or 6 times a day. There have been a few random days where he's only gone 3 times. I've been assured that this is normal. I'm eagerly anticipating the 3 month slow-down.

Normal for me too. LO poops about 5-8 times a day. As far as the redness, have you thought about maybe issues with what you are wiping him with? Or maybe its just irritation because of the new skin and acid in the poop.
As far as the discomfort my LO was experiencing severe gas and pedi recommended cutting back on dairy. After doing a lot of research online about milk protein sensitivities I eliminated most dairy. It has helped a lot. I dont eat butter, yogurt, cheese or milk and she is doing much better.

I think that amount of pooping is normal. DS could have up to 15 poopy diapers a day when he was a newborn, and he wasn't even a high frequency nurser. I'm not sure about being miserable while pooping. I'm assuming the poop is the usual cottage cheese consistency? It can't hurt to ask his ped about it.
It was normal for us to have 10-12 poops a day at first. She'd poop before and after every nursing, and she was nursing every 1.5-2 hours during day and about 3 at night. I learned to not change her until after she ate (MOTN, I changed after she pooped and between sides) because we were just wasting so many diapers.
At 3m, she suddenly went 3 days without pooping. I was terrified. Then, she struck up a twice a day and then once a day habit that was pretty nice.
20 times a day and uncomfortable would make me a bit concerned. It can't hurt to check it out.
Yep, constant pooping is normal early on. The older your little guy gets, the more that will calm down. The crying and being miserable isn't something I remember though and 20 does seem on the higher side... agreed that it can't hurt to ask the pedi. We use Triple paste and haven't had any issues with a rash in the entire 10 months. GL!

Normal. My DD was pooping constantly from 1-4 weeks. I called the pedi thinking it was diarrhea (it wasn't). Just be sure to use an ointment or cream to prevent diaper rash. It also wouldn't hurt to do naked time. Just be sure to keep LO on a towel you don't mind getting poopy.
I remember first weeks with newborn we were using a diaper service and had 12 dozen diapers at the house. And running out in about a week and trying to figure out how the heck that happened. There were a few multiple diaper blow outs and dh changing a wet diaper that wasn't wet but for many days it was close to 20 a day. Wow.
Just be sure you aren't changing before they are done popping. And if it's less than the size of a quarter it's not really a whole poop so it's just a wet fart. Lol.
Don't worry while they are like birds now and when they eat they poop - it won't be like that long.
That amount of poop is ok early on! For the skin, make sure you dab instead of wiping and that the skin is always dry before you apply new ointment or a new diaper. Wet skin will lead to denuded skin and rash.
My first did the crying thing during poops. Gripe water was a huge help! I've also had good luck with lying baby across a forearm football style or squatting them like a little frog.

DD pooped like that too. She's 3 months now and it has slowed down a lot. I ended up getting CJs Butter for her redness and she hasn't had any since! It's pricey, but you don't have to use much.
