Stupid question - I plan to visit DD at daycare to nurse her during the "lunch hour" since I'm still on maternity leave for one more week. I have a lot of frozen milk to use, so could I skip pumping in the afternoon that I feed her? I'm more or less asking in case she only takes one side or doesn't empty for some reason.
I wouldn't skip any pumping sessions at this stage unless you are ok with a supply decrease. I would pump if she gets a bottle.
She wouldn't. She'd get me. I'm just wondering if I should still plan to pump when I get home from her visit (or in the car).
I've only been back to work for 5 days, and pumping has been going well so far. I've been leaving the sitter with 3 ounce bottles, and so far DS's been taking three bottles every 2.5-3 hours while I'm at work (9 ounces during my 9 hour work day - I'm following the ounce-per-hour-I'm-away rule).
Today my sitter said he seems hungry after finishing a bottle, and thinks I should leave three 4 ounce bottles instead. I'm pumping enough that I think this is doable, but will it cause a supply dip if he takes fewer ounces from the breast in the evening since he's getting more from the bottle during the day?
apk4 a pound a month is a perfectly acceptable weight gain. As long as the average is 0.5 ounces/day, you're good. And if baby gained faster early on, then it is common for weight gain to level off as well.
As for your mom, I would send her info about breastfeeding (like the aap recs) or tell her to shut up if she can't get behind the natural way to feed your child.
theresat858 Thank you! Basically I need to take a chill pill.
So I didn't take my own advice and did the scale thing again tonight. Tonight it said there was exactly a 14 pound difference. He couldn't have lost 8 ounces in a day, right? It's just inaccurate and I need to step away. Right?

If she only takes one side, or if it will be more than 2-3 hours before you see her again, then sure, I'd pump. You can store what you get for future use! If you're only away from LO for a short time and she won't even be getting a bottle, I wouldn't bother.

Step away from the scale. That test isn't accurate. It told me that DD was over 10 pounds when she was actually 9.5.

Can you leave the 3oz bottles plus a few 1oz bottles, and ask that she offer the extra ounce only if he really seems hungry after the 3oz? That will help prevent him from being overfed while you're away. Nursing just before you leave him and asking that his caregiver hold off on offering a bottle for the last hour you're away will help too.

Step away. The only way to get an accurate baby weight is to use a scale that is accurate to the ounce! And if he had recently peed or pooped, or recently eaten, that can make enough of a difference to make his weights off.
Is your pedi concerned? 5-9oz weight gain per week is normal. Is he a happy kid? Stooling and peeing regularly? Meeting milestones?

Pedi is slightly concerned and asked for a weight check this week (tomorrow). He's otherwise happy, I think he is eating plenty (16 ounces in 12 hours at daycare and then nurses 3-5 times at home), and he has 8-10 wet diapers a day. I'm hoping it is just a scale issue in the pedi's office and that he is okay, but slowing down on growth.

If the pedi is concerned tomorrow, you may want to consider asking for a referral to an IBCLC who can work with you and your doctor to figure out what's going on (milk transfer issue, positioning issue, etc.). I would ask your doctor how much he expects LO to be gaining each week, too. Good luck! Hopefully LO's weight gain is right on track.

This!
That scale thing panicked me maybe two months ago when it indicated baby had lost weight...she had, in fact, gained an appropriate amount (I can't remember the time frame between the weigh ins) once we got a real weight at the lactation group the next day.
Sorry but I have a two part question....AF came back this week and I have seen a huge decrease when pumping at work. I used to get 2oz each side each session now I am barely seeing 1oz each side each session. What can I do to ensure AF doesn't mess me up next month?? I've been sending 3oz bottles to daycare and for my mom to feed LO. They both say she needs more, but I know she isn't getting more than 3oz from me. I had my mom watch paced feeding videos and read about it. How much should LO be taking at 3 months?

Some women experience a drop in milk supply from ovulation (mid-cycle) until the first day or two of the next menstrual period. A woman’s blood calcium levels gradually decrease during this period of time, and for some women the drop in blood calcium causes a drop in milk supply. For women who have this problem, calcium/magnesium supplements may be helpful. This practice has also been reported to eliminate most uterine cramping and some premenstrual discomfort such as water retention.
The recommended calcium supplement dosage is between 500 mg calcium/250 mg magnesium and 1500 mg calcium/750 mg magnesium (the higher dosage is generally more effective). Calcium dosages this high should not be taken alone, but as a calcium/magnesium (or calcium/magnesium/zinc) combination. Otherwise the calcium will not be adequately absorbed into your body. The amount of supplement depends on the composition of your diet — the more animal protein, the more calcium/magnesium needed. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, the lower dosage may work fine for you. If you supplement more than 500 mg calcium per day, then divide the dose so you’re not taking it all at once – calcium absorption is best when a person consumes no more than 500 mg at one time.
Start the supplement when you ovulate, and continue through the first few days of your menstrual period. If periods are irregular, then begin calcium/magnesium at 14 days after the beginning of your last menstrual cycle, or simply take the supplement every day.
Ok, that was just copied/pasted. It has info regarding supplementing with calcium/magnesium to avoid suplly drop during your period. You can google to find out more.
DD slept an 8 hr stretch last night. Is this okay at this age? She's exactly 3 1/2 months. Was previously sleeping 5 hr stretches until the last 3 days and her sleep has been getting an hour longer each night. Do I need to worry about pumping or waking her up at this point?
I have a frozen milk question. DD's growth spurt is making it difficult to pump so I finally have to start using my freezer stash this weekend. I know thawed milk is only good for 24 hours after it's thawed but when should I start thawing it? If I need milk for Saturday between 8am-4pm do I start thawing it tonight (Thursday) or Friday night or sometime in between? This might be a dumb question, I just want to make sure it's thawed by the time she needs to eat.

It's totally ok, as long as she's nursing lots during the day and has good diaper output, is happy and gaining weight well at her appts. If you wake feeling full, you can dream feed or hand express/pump, but otherwise enjoy the sleep! Do be aware that often fertility returns when babies sleep long stretches, so if you're not on BC, be careful!

It can stay frozen until it's used, if you want! Caregiver can run the bag/bottle of milk under warm water to thaw when it's going to be used.

I am pretty positive that Emma is allergic to beef. She throws up mucousy milk and gets congested. I think I have finally traced it to beef products... I have about 60 oz of unusable frozen milk if this is true. I have wanted to donate milk anyway and was planning to look into it down the line. Does anyone know anything about this? I will probably try to do it sooner rather than later to get rid of the stuff I can't use. I am willing to add more oz as I build a bigger stash. Ideas?
Anyway know anything about beef allergies? It seems strange to me but my pedi actually suggested this as a potential cause because it is popular among infants. I feel like I have never heard of it though.

I have never heard of an infant beef allergy. I will do some research and get back to you.
Does she have any other symptoms of allergy; skin rashes, frothy/bloody stool, lots of crying, etc.? Food allergies in infants are actually pretty rare.
Are you sure her congestion and mucousy spit up aren't related to a virus? Or dry winter air (do you have a humidifier)? Could it be a pet allergy? How long has this been going on?
I might ask your pedi about a referral to an allergist for testing if she believes this to be a true allergy.
Anyway, your question was about donating. You can search for a reputable milk bank to donate to, or directly donate your milk to a mom in need via Human Milk 4 Human Babies or Eats on Feets.

My baby is officially getting more formula than BM. And my supply sucks. I pumped at work with my coworker, and it's so discouraging. I'm barely bringing two bottles home a day, and she has 5-6?

How often are you pumping at work? Can you add a couple sessions? How much does LO nurse at night?
You might need to work hard to increase your supply, but I bet it can be done! When did you first notice a supply dip?

I *try* to pump every three hours, but it doesn't always work that way. I'm a nurse. DD is sleeping through the night, so I haven't been waking up out of my sleep to pump. I need every drop. And sadly, I don't know when it dipped. I rarely pump at home because she's nursing or she doesn't nap and won't entertain herself while I pump. I've never really gotten more than that a day though...

If you want to increase your supply, you'll need more stimulation which after several days will translate into increased production. If you're pumping every 3 hours and can't add another full session, consider bringing a manual pump to work and pumping for just 5 minutes half way between sessions. You'll get an extra ounce or two and the stimulation will help increase your supply. Also, and this is tough, I know, but set an alarm during the night to dream feed or pump. Nurse as often as you can at home too. Hopefully your supply will bounce back after a week or so!

That's going to be hard Em. Sleep is very valuable around here. I get up for work around 5. I can't imagine waking up to pump. But I'll try on my days off. I went ahead and bought a medela manual. My Ameda just won't act right anymore. So hopefully that will be good. I've always gotten better output with manual anyway.
Please tell me it's ok to not feel guilty when I STTN with LO and don't get a pumping session in. I don't know why but I'm irrationally afraid my supply is going to just dry up. I have 560 ounces stored but I keep thinking that's not nearly enough.
I also saw where some ladies are doing weighed feedings and was wondering if I should do the same now that she's older to get an idea of how much she should be taking rather than guessing since she almost always cries at the bottle, especially during burping and MIL keeps insisting she needs 6-8 ounces instead of 4.

I would say Emma is sick once a week since the end of Dec. we have overloaded her on humidifier and steamy showers. No other symptoms - stuffy nose and mucousy throw up (whole belly contracts and then she pukes). Sometimes red splotchiness on face. We took her to the doctor who said to track what I eat. It seems to correlate during the week (sometimes once a week sometimes zero sometimes twice) with when I eat tacos (the only beef in my diet). She was very sick for the next 24 hrs. She had said to look for milk, egg or beef allergy. If I think she is allergic is their a real need to see an allergist do you think?
I don't know if this is relevant but I wanted nothing to do with beef when I was pregnant which is weird I love hamburg and steak...
