Today he wouldn't nap when I just stayed in his room -- until I left.

I feel like I can't plan shit right now because I have no idea when he'll nap, what time he'll go down, or how long he'll sleep.

Could you try the hardline? At daycare you nap when everyone else does. You can lay quietly, but those are your choices.

The problem is that he won't lay quietly and I can't exactly make him...

This is actually what I am doing with El right now because she is refusing to sleep the past three days. 

She talks to herself, throws stuffies around, kicks the walls of her crib etc. As long as she doesn't lose her shit, mama gets the hour-ish long break however.
