My line: "I'm just getting over a terrible cold.  A drink doesn't even sound good right now."

Great lines?  Other tips?

I would fake it rather than lie to avoid getting caught. But I'm a terrible liar and a big social drinker, so I just would never get away with lying!

Yeah I am a bad liar so I also fake drink. If you can go to the bar by yourself and get cranberry juice or soda water with a lime you can look like you are drinking.

I'm (well was...) a regular drinker and I have used this excuse twice so far! 
I like the idea of getting the cranberry juice and tonic too though!

I started spreading the news in December that my New Years Resolution was no drinking for 60 days. It's working like a charm!

I haven't had to lie because I'm not a big drinker, but I was rea ding something that suggested telling people you were taking antibiotics. You can't mix them with alcohol so people are less likely to push vs. just saying you aren't feeling up to it.

Oral metronidazole, brand Flagyl. If you drink while taking it, it creates a byproduct of acetone, aka nail polish remover, and makes you vomit, not unlike Antabuse. Furthermore, the package insert recommends not drinking for three days following therapy AND you can't take it while pregnant, so if anyone tries to call you out, you can mention the contraindication. If anyone asks,  you got it to calm your gut inflammation after a bout of food poisoning. If you couple it with being pissed off that you can't drink and the day count with when you can start again, no one will know.

I've said I was the DD, had a big meeting in the morning, and "nah, not tonight, just not in the mood ya know?" and they seem to be working.... for now. I did the "fake" drinks last pregnancy though, so that's not out of the realm of possibility. We're planning on doing the FB announcement on Sunday though so I won't have to lie for much longer.

I was going to suggest something along these lines. There's got to be some cold or flu meds that you're not supposed to mix with alcohol... say you're "getting over a cold/flu and are taking "XYZ" and shouldn't mix it with alcohol."

I hosted my friend's bachelorette party a couple weeks ago. I made it through pretty well by a) acting like I hadn't decided yet when the waitress came around and said I'd start with water while I looked; b) ordering a cocktail and a seltzer when she came back, so people heard me order alcohol; c) handing the cocktail off to the bachelorette when it arrived (you know, nice gesture); d) nursing my seltzer with lime the rest of the night.

No one was paying attention to me enough to notice I didn't end up with a real drink, and I looked like I had my vodka seltzer.

I've used my DD as an excuse not to drink: she's sick/not sleeping/is up super early so I'm not up for drinking. Also people don't know I've stopped breastfeeding so I have used that too. I've used the excuse that I am picking up my BF who is also out drinking.

Most of my friends that I drink with are work friends. I work in a hospital and have had to switch people patients because of chemo, etc. They all know already. No hiding it for me.

I still use the breastfeeding excuse too. Can you offer to be the DD ahead of time. I've also found the waitress in the back and tell her what's up and have her get me virgin when I order hard drinks.

I've told people that I am avoiding alcohol while we are trying to conceive as a precaution . It helps that our friends and family know we want a LO !

I guess mine sort of depends on whether or not you'd be so open with your friends, but I say I get a UTI flare up whenever I drink so I'm avoiding alcohol for awhile. Partly based on truth and no one pushes it.

Thank you! Although I must confess that I haven't used it as a fib--it happened to me for real two and a half years ago...food poisoning from a spinach salad. I remember wondering if anyone thought I was hiding a pregnancy at the time.

At a recent business meeting however, I used ginger ale and seltzer in a wine glass as my cover. Beverages could only be ordered at the walk-up bars, so I offered to be the drink runner for my friends thereby affording me the option to tell only those whom I wanted to know.

As a recovering alcoholic myself, ^ This is offensive. When I tell the people close to me that I AM an alcoholic, I own it, I answer their questions. I don't "break down crying"...

I avoided bars because I am a huge beer drinker and my turning down beer would have been a dead giveaway. I did go to house parties with a six pack of Beck's non-alcoholic beer. DH was my bartender all night so the girls wouldn't follow me to the refrigerator. Three "beers" in I'd say I'd better stop cause someone had to drive. Exactly what I did before I was pregnant. Now we're out so nothing more to hide wooooooohoooooooooo
