We have been attempting blw since father's day. Originally it seemed to be going pretty well. LO has tried bananas, cucumber, celery, carrots, broccoli, strawberries, steak, and chicken. We have tried a few purees of sweet potatoes, bananas, applesauce, and pears. The only things she liked are strawberries, broccoli, steak, chicken, and occasionally cucumber.
She has gagged a few times and now I find myself very anxious every time she eats. So anxious that I want to avoid having to feed her but I know I can't. Any suggestions for what else to try or how to ease my anxiety when feeding LO? Has anyone had success?
I searched to see if another thread was already started and couldn't find one.
I was having this same problem! Going back to read the pages on gagging vs. choking in the BLW book was very helpful. Knowing that the gag reflex is closer to the center of their mouth was helpful. I've been reassured from other people that they may gag a lot the first couple of weeks, but they learn quickly! So, we're trucking forward and I just try to keep my cool during meals. I still sit on the edge of my seat though!!

Stick with it! We did purees with our first and had a terrible time transitioning him to finger foods becasue he'd try to swallow everything whole. If lo is having success with blw, keep with it and just be vigilant. I can see the benefit of a baby learning to chew before he/she learns to swallow.
Soft foods we started with include bananas, sweet potatoes, and avocado. We've added all sorts of textures now like dark meat chicken, zucchini, toast, and teething biscuits.
We've only been doing BLW and it is working out really well for us. Since LOs first meal he has picked it up like he's been doing it forever, but I think he may be an anomaly. Before we started I youtubed BLW and gagging babies so I I could actually see babies lo's age eating successfully AND to be familiar with what it looks like when a baby gags. It was really helpful to see what gagging really looks like before I saw lo gag. LO has only gagged a couple times and each times got up and spit out whatever made him gag. To start food should be cut into long stick shapes so it's easy for baby to pick them up. I would keep trying different things and keep us updated with lo's progress!
Such a great idea to look at videos! We are going to keep at it!

Last night we had some success! LO enjoyed strawberries, broccoli, chicken, and finally banana. I did find myself taking smaller pieces away from her though. She only gagged once! We are going to stick with it though. I felt a little better when I looked up the signs of choking and what to do. Thank you everyone for your encouragement!
We are kind of doing a mix. LO hadn't gotten chewing down yet and has no teeth, so we mostly do purées and really mushy foods. I also give her bamba (Israeli peanut butter snack that's basically every child's first food) so she learns about holding food and chewing.
