Humor me? Question about Roller Coasters & Pregnancy

Hey ladies,

CD1 here, and I'm curious about your thoughts on the following situation:

H and I are going on an anniversary trip at the end of February to Universal Studios. (Hellooooo Harry Potter!!!) If I get pregnant this cycle, I'd be 5 weeks along. 

Would you ride roller coasters at 5 weeks? The research is inconclusive, but the general consensus is that pregnant women should avoid coasters due to the concern that the jerks and turns can cause placental abruption. However, I wonder if that would be a concern at 5 weeks.

Basically, I'm a hormonal ball of feels, and I'm asking you all to tell me whether I should go ahead and TTC this month and sacrifice the coasters (if we get a BFP, which is looking less and less likely) or whether we should just hold off this month and enjoy our trip (our first vacation together, ever) to the fullest.

I imagine if I were say.. having MS.. I would want to puke. That would only be a problem for those I puked on.

I would be too nervous. Mainly because of the bar that sits on your stomach and because rollar coasters have sudden stops it puts me out of my personal comfort zone.

ETA: Because I didn't read the whole post. I wouldn't worry about your trip unless you got a BFP. Just test before going on the rides and if it's a BFN I wouldn't worry about it.

On an unrelated note I'm dying to get to Universal for HP world.

A big part of me agrees. The baby is so small at that point that I don't think any amount of jerking could really have much of an effect.

But a bigger part of me wonders if I'd ever be able to forgive myself, if anything happened later on in the pregnancy. KWIM?

I agree, I don't know if I'd stop TTC because of the trip. If I got a BFP I probably wouldn't go on the coasters but I wouldn't stop TTC for a month because of it.

We went in 2013, and I loved it so, so, so, so much. We decided to go back for our 10th Anniversary to see the new part they just opened (Diagon Alley!! Gringotts!!! PLATFORM 9 3/4!!!!), and I can't wait. It is, far and above, the best amusement park I've ever visited. (And I've been to a lot of amusement parks.) They do an unreal job of making you feel like you are actually in HP's world.

I agree with pps, if I got a BFP before the trip, I would skip em.

I rode shotgun with DH in a demolition derby race when I was about 5 weeks pregnant with DS. Didn't get my BFP til the next week I believe. My midwife giggled when I asked her about it and she said I had nothing to worry about. But...::shrug:: man, I don't know. I still probably wouldn't if I knew.

I'm super paranoid because of AL brain, so I personally wouldn't risk it. I probably wouldn't judge anyone who did though.

I probably wouldn't go on a big coaster while even a little pregnant. I'm sure the chances of harm are low though. As for TTA, that's up to you. I probably would have when we first started trying, but now I wouldn't.

I'm sure a lot of women probably ride roller coasters before knowing they're pregnant, if that helps.

I definitely wouldn't skip ttc (we were tentatively planning a trip to Universal for HP for our tenth anniversary, and we started ttc and if I get pregnant, I won't be able to travel that far then, let alone rides).

I personally would be ok with most coasters at 5w, but totally understand why people wouldn't want to take chances. I wouldn't cancel the trip and I wouldn't not ttc, I'd adjust my plans while there if necessary.

I do know what you mean. Also I have only been on a roller coaster once in my life and never to a theme park. I dont think I really am an expert on this topic.


But the puking. I did do that! I could barely ride the bus, so I couldn't imagine enjoying a roller coaster.

I wouldn't postponed TTC. At 5 weeks pregnant, if I felt okay, I'd might go on a roller coaster or two.

I feel like it probably wouldn't hurt anything sinc ethe uterus is still lower than the pubic bone until around 12 weeks. That said, if youa re pregnant you will probably be so psyched that you won't care about going on the coasters. We were at Disneyland/California Adventure when DS was 2.5. He was too short for a lot of the rides and we didn't want to go alone, so we just skipped them. Disney will still be there when he's taller. I'm sure you will go back to Orlando at least once with your child and you'll have another shot at the rides if you choose to forego them this time. I certainly wouldn't put TTC on hold, but that's me.

I'm a speshul sneuflake. I wouldn't ride a roller coaster in any condition. KU, happy, sad, drunk, if I was getting paid to do it... The heart attack that would ensue would not be worth it to me.

I don't think anything would happen at 5 weeks on a roller coaster honestly, but I probably wouldn't do it just because of paranoia.

I probably wouldn't do it if I knew I was pregnant. I would also not allow it to stop me from going to the park. H and I are going to Disney world in March and will continue to TTC. If I do end up pregnant I just won't ride the roller coasters. There are of plenty of other things to do in the park.

I love roller coasters!! However, I probably wouldn't ride on one if I got BFP. I do know it wouldn't keep me from TTC. I love roller coasters... but not as much as I would love a baby.

Granted I have absolutely no knowledge of how it could impact things when you're not that far along... but I tend to be overly paranoid about things. (Yet I like riding roller coasters... MH has never been able to figure that out)

This. I think we are sometimes overly cautious with certain things in early pregnancy. 5 weeks =/= 5 months. I would probably ride the rides.

That being said, I might feel differently if I did get a BFP and was in the actual situation... Also my H might not want me to take the risk, and I would respect his opinion too. I don't think there's much risk that early, but if you are uncomfortable or questioning it, then don't do it. I would not TTA for that reason though.

I don't know what's in the new Harry Potter World part that just opened, but the Hogsmeade part has two rides. Two. That's it. The ride inthe castle, where you sit and move with a large screen, and one based on dragons, which is a fast moving coaster.

There's more to do than the rides in that section - Honeydukes, Ollivanders, butter beer, and eat!! But, I will be honest, Harry Potter World is not a full day experience. It's a small part of a much much larger park.

So, my question is this: what about the rest of your day at Universal? Do you want to ride all the Universal roller coasters? Will you find the whole day boring if you do no fast rides and stick only to tame ones? Are you also going to Disney? Is this going to be a week of roller coasters?

For the record, I did not do either ride at Harry Potter World and I feel like I missed out on nothing.

At this point, I would not be stressing. Plan the trip and worry about the rides after the BFP.

I personally would not ride the roller coaster. With my previous loss, I'm probably going to be extra cautious.

We didn't hit anything, but the truck whipped around 3 times with ongoing traffic coming at us (we landed in a ditch). It was terrifying. Even though we were only 8.5 weeks along, and the Dr says it has nothing to do with the accident, I still have a strange feeling in my heart about that moment.

I wouldn't ride roller coasters, but I've had a loss and if I get pregnant again, I'll probably be overly cautious.

I also don't like roller coasters, so it's an easy choice for me I had a lot of back pain even in my short pregnancy, so I don't think a roller coaster would feel too good on my body.

I personally wouldn't be comfortable with that at all. Then again, I've spent obscene amounts of money trying to make babies, so... there's no way I would risk that. I'm with the other ladies though- if you're doing natural cycles (read: not spending obscene amounts of money), and you get a BFN right before going, I'm sure you'll be fine.

I am so sorry for your loss. Your story got me choked up just thinking about the emotions you've gone through due to that coincidence. *Hugs*

I voted no as well. Logically there is little to no chance of a roller coaster ride affecting your PG at 5 weeks, but personally I would be mind fucked about it and it wouldn't be worth it. If this isn't your month, you can enjoy the silver lining of an uninhibited trip to Universal. If you do get your BFP, you will be over the moon happy and can enjoy Universal with a bun in the oven. Sounds like a win win to me!

It depends on the roller coaster but I wouldn't worry about it until you're actually pregnant. You can't put your life on hold to TTC and there's plenty to do there if you do get pregnant and decide you don't want to ride roller coasters.

When we were TFAS previously, we started planning to surprise DS with passes to Disneyland. Once I did get pregnant, we researched and read all of the precautions. We determined that anything with sudden drops, sharp turns, fast speeds, etc I was not going on. I was still able to ride quite a bit but I don't know what all Universal has as well as the HP portion. I would continue to plan your trip. If you get pregnant prior to going, just plan accordingly if you don't feel comfortable riding the bigger rides.

I haven't been to the new HP section, but for the old one had two dragon coasters that I would not go on. The ride in Hogwarts Castle makes me super motion sick to begin with, BUT all the cool stuff you see in the castle while waiting in the line is still worth it (there is a special exit just before the ride for pregnant ladies and those who get motion sick). The Hippogryff kiddie coaster? I'd probably still ride that one. But HP world is still SUPER awesome even if you don't go on any coasters, so I would still TTC - you'll have a great time even if you go the safe route and don't ride the roller coasters!

^ this. HP land is a blast even without the rides. That line for the castle is amazeballs. I'm betting some of the water rides are less bumpy and risky for pregnant riders, but it may be freezing still so I don't know if that's appealing at all, lol. (I used to have an annual pass to Universal but it's been a while since I've been!)

Ok, totally off-topic, but did anyone else get scared to death on the Hogwarts castle ride? I seriously covered my eyes and screamed till I was hoarse. The effects are just so real. But oh so good.
