pmcd886, I only pump until empty, or I can't see anything moving in the flanges. Typically about 6 min. but I also have some easily drained ladies.
Have you tried stimulating another let down? You may be able to get some more milk.
I agree that you will probably get more if pump for longer. I feel like I am at the point that I will keep getting milk if I keep pumping. I don't want to create an oversupply, but I don't want to cut it too short and wish I was getting more later in the game. With my first 2 I never pumped for extra, just in place of a feeding so I feel like a major rookie.

There is definitely a learning curve with pumping and you just need to play with it. You want to empty your breasts so you don't create a problem with clogged ducts. I started with just trying for 20 minutes then I figured out the let down button. Sometimes I needed more than 20 minutes. Like I said just play around with it.
skinandbones, I have not, mostly because in that ~6 min i get over 6 oz combined. today with only pumping at the 3hr mark instead of his cluster feeding times, I put away 15 oz.
I have a poop question and I'm not sure where else to put it, so I'll just leave it here. For those of you EBF, are your LO's poops loud? I always know when DD2 poops because I can hear it. She's not really straining before, it's just loud. DD1 was the same way, her uncles nicknamed her "Thunderpants". But when she was 8 weeks old she was diagnosed with MSPI (milk soy protein intolerance) and apparently explosive poops are an early sign. After I eliminated dairy and soy from my diet, DD1's poops were no longer audible. So of course I am ridiculously paranoid that because DD2 is a loud pooper that she will also have MSPI. Please tell me you can hear your LO's poops too??
I can hear L poop. Although, it is more of a shart at this point. Its almost like he just has gas and some comes with each fart.

Super loud! Like you can hear it from the other side of the room. I haven't been worried about it. What other symptoms did your daughter have
noname sometimes I can. It's not every time, but I'd say about half of the time.
When it was diagnosed last time were the poops darker in color? When my cousins daughter was diagnosed that was the indication that tipped the doctor off. FX you don't have to deal with it this time.

Yes really loud. This is my first time breastfeeding so I didn't expect it at all. When I asked my lc about it she said it was normal for bf babies because of how easily the breast milk is broken down and excreted. Are his poops the seedy yellow color or are they different?

Yep, in fact I am listening to her poop right now. Thank goodness because I think she has been trying since last night and has been pretty miserable. Hoping this makes her a little more content.
noname, we've been calling LO "Thunderbutt" if that answers your question. It's funny b/c my dad calls his other grandsons cute nicknames like "Turkeybutt" and "Monkeybutt" and I said oh Lord, please don't let our child be nicknamed Thunderbutt for life.

It's been feeding time every 30 min to an hour today. My nipples hurt and I'm beat. I want to leave the house but don't want to deal with screaming then nursing in public. I just don't feel quite ready to NIP since our latch is still inconsistent. Feeling a bit stuck.

You get 6oz in 6 minutes?!? It takes me an hour to get that much! I'm so jealous! That would change my life.

I feel you! I want to get out of the house so bad, but feel like I'm tied to the baby. It is just so much easier to nurse in your comfort zone where you don't have to cover up at all.
We're having a rough time over here. She latches, I'm producing enough milk, but the nipple pain is almost unbearable. It's been this way from the beginning (she's 8 days old now,) LC at the hospital already confirmed a good latch, no tongue ties or anything. Multiple doctors/nurses have exclaimed at how strong her suck is when checking her mouth.
Every nursing session feels like a sharp toothed creature is chewing on my nipples. I'm often crying during it. An LC is coming tomorrow, really hope she can help!
I hate trying to figure out this whole schedule thing. I know I can't schedule a three week old, but if she is well over birth weight, would you guys wake to feed during the day? At night she has been giving me three hours tops, but during the day I have to wake her at the three hour mark. Should I let her go four hours during the day? Why don't babies come with personalized instruction manuals?!?!

I feel your pain (literally). This is why I'm pumping now. I haven't attempted BF for a week and my nipples are finally healing. I'm meeting with a LC early next week and I'll give BF another shot, but if it's as painful as before I will just stick with the pumping and supplementing with formula. I cannot spend every day in that much pain.

I'm sorry. I've been there and still kind of am. I have met a couple LCs and found them so helpful. We finally have a pretty consistent latch on the right but are still majorly struggling on the left. That poor nipple is so battered so any latch makes me want to scream and cry for the first minutes. I dread the feedings that start on that side. For reference my daughter is 19 days old. I hope the LC is able to help you. I've learned that you can't rely on latch only looking good!
So today baby is four days old. Here is our history thus far.
Tried to start BF quickly, but omg the nurses gave me these shield things bc of my nips and they just, wouldn't stay on and he hated them. He got latched to one boob and oh my jeez the pain. Felt like constant tittle twisters.
Then magically a LC appeared in my room. She said lo and behold the nurses gave me the wrong size shields. So she fixed that. Then she taught me how to properly latch. It still pinched a bit, to which she admitted she was a touch worried about a tongue and lip tie, but that she couldn't be sure. She left us with decent success in getting colostrum.
LO lost a total of 8oz in the hospital of his 7lbs 8oz. Yesterday was our first night home. He hasn't poo'ed at the hospital since like 3am and I was starting to worry that I was somehow inadequate. I was literally in tears thinking it's all my fault, my boobs are broken he hates me. (So not baby blues right? /sarcasm). DH and I, as first time parents, know nothing really, so we talked and I said how worried I was and he said "well we have the formula samples they mailed us". So we supplemented 1oz of formula to our LO who eas happy to take it. I pumped to see if aching was actually coming out and found that I have transitional you milk, so I saved the 5ml I had in syringes for later. Still no poopy diaper.
Then He went from angel baby always willing to try to devil child who wanted to feed literally every hour on the hour overnight, but it took 10 min to get him latched bc of the screaming. I am terribly tired today bc of it. He was horrible, and the morning came and I was almost ready to quit.
And then with the sun came and my angel baby returned. We payed in bed (still recovering from c section) and he nursed every few hours, from 20-60 min on a breast, was so content with all of it. We started learning each other better. I know he hates a loose swaddle, but if I do a good burrito I can totally get him to nurse. If he is gassy or has to pee forget it, any air or pee hit the diaper and he is a mess. His latch has improved drastically. And mummy's milk is coming in even better. He's showing a slight preference for one over the other which I need to break, but I am so beyond happy arm. Just hoping he stays angel baby tonight.
(Sorry that's a long drawn out posts tldr: almost quit, glad I kept trying, hoping things stay positive)
Ok so intro esque thing aside, does anyone else find that they can be awake and breast feeding just makes you get soooo sleepy? Could just be lack of sleep on my part but whoa
I think I may have thrush :/ I see two tiny white spots in Noah's mouth, nothing on my nipple except for excruciating, baby has razor blades for teeth, pain and pain really deep in my breast while nursing and immediately afterward. It was too late to call anyone when I realized it so I pulled out our nystatin cream and put it on. Hoping it helps and I'll only have to pump that side for a few days. Nothing is going on with the other side so I'm just making sure it's clean for now until we can see someone. Who do I even see about this? My ob? Or pcp? I've never been to my pcp. Or the pedi? I'm so confused.
I'm dealing with this too. It sucks. I'm on culturelle and my ob prescribed diflucan. One pill like treatment for a yeast infection is not enough. I'm on it for 14 days. I'm using nystatin in her mouth as a preventative. I also have gentian violet that I'm going to use on my nipples for a few days. I'm trying everything cause I hate thrush. Boil anything that goes in babies mouth and pump parts and wash any clothes or towels that touch your boobs on hot.

I'm so close to giving up and I feel so guilty. LO has a great latch and is c great eater but I feel trapped. I pumped for the first time yesterday and he ended up drinking that milk last night. I pumped once today and got 1oz from one side but he woke up hungry and breastfed, then drunk the milk I pumped and was still hungry and getting very angry and trying to get him to latch only agitated him more. I guess the milk wasn't coming fast enough or at all? So I cracked and gave him some supplemental formula and he downed 2oz of that. I'm just overly exhausted and this isn't making the newborn phase any easier.
carabassa, my LC follow up today said it might be because of the size of nipple to baby mouth. My LO has a tiny mouth. While my nips are not tiny. She also said it could be from how hard my LO is 'biting down.' It has gotten better at just past 2 weeks. But it still is just past uncomfortable.

Night feeding makes me bitter. Little one will just not open wide enough or stay on anything but the nipple. We started strong tonight but then crumbled. I hate going to a bottle after over 10 minutes on each side but she is freaking out and rooting. I'll calm her but she still don't latch. I'm about to lose my mind and clearly I'm an emotional mess. Thank goodness my husband is walking her around now. We see an LC in the morning but I'm not sure how much more of this I can take.
