hopefulreturn I am hating night feeding right now as well. I have been up since 1220. Every damn time I put her down she wakes back up, nurses for a couple of minutes, falls asleep and then the cycle begins again. I am thisclose to making a formula bottle just so I can try and sleep. It is now almost 315 and she is crying....again...

I hope you're finally getting some rest! we just fell asleep after feeding for five minutes, and I know if I put her down it's going to happen again. Due to suspected reflux we are supposed to keep her upright 30 minutes after eating which extends this pattern even more. Here's hoping we don't get naps today and a better night tonight!
Well I tried pumping after our morning feeding (he was on each side for about 10 minutes), and I didn't even get an ounce. He has a weight check today so hopefully he's at least getting enough even though I'm wasn't able to pump any.
DS is on for about the same time. After he's done I only get a few drops. If he only took one side I'll get about 3-4 oz from the other. It could be he is just draining you adequately. Is he gaining well?
If you're looking to up your supply, you could try pumping after you stop getting milk for about 5 - 7 mins. With DD I did this after every feed for a few days to up my production.
Well crap...he didn't gain any weight. In fact he lost more from when he left the hospital. Also, we did a weighted feed and he didn't gain. I have to supplement with formula and go back next Friday. I am willing to try anything to increase production, so any ideas you have, lay them all me!

Remind me how old he is (on mobile and can't keep track!)

I'm so sorry, that sucks! I've never dealt with low supply, but I think some tips would be drink TONS of water. Lots of skin to skin time. Make sure you're eating enough calories. Adding pumping time. Im sure others have better suggestions, I hope you get it all figured out!

I'm having decent luck with homemade lactation cookies and this supplement my LC recommended.
Plus LOTS of pumping. We only had 8ml transfer at the first weighted feed. I did a week of pumping 15-20 mins after every breast feeding, even at night. Then feeding the milk I pumped via bottle when I was done (about 1.5- 2 oz).
At my week 1 follow-up we are up to 54ml feed at the breast (woohoo) and only need 1oz expressed milk now to supplement. I'm now pumping 2-3oz after every other feed. And she gained half a pound.

I completely understand how disappointing it is. I am currently pumping and doing everything to try to help supply and supplementing 2/3 breastmilk, 1/3 formula.
My suggestions (also what I am doing to increase supply) are eat oatmeal, drink lots of water, try fenugreek and blessed thistle (3 pills each 3 times a day), skin to skin, and power pumping (I do this to simulate cluster feeding since she is not at the breast). I am currently getting between 16-20 oz a day. I have seen a slight increase in a couple ounces a day but I have had a breast reduction so it is more difficult for me.
I hope you are able to see an increase in supply soon!
I don't have any advice as far as things to try to increase supply, but just wanted to share that at 9 days old my LO was 15% down from birth weight. I was dealing with low supply from trouble latching due to tongue/lip tie. Once we had him latching well and feeding lots I was able to bring my supply back up and gain his weight back. Just wanted to share a positive experience in the hopes that you can make it work too!
@mrspanpan hugs to you, I know when wee had to start supplimenting it was very tough on me emotionally. You've been given great advice on increasing supply. The bright side to supplimenting is DH being able to help. H enjoyed getting a chance to feed as well, it have him more bonding time as well.
We dealt with weight loss issues until our daughter was about 13 Days old. She finally put up a better number and reached birthweight again around then. Our shallow latch was a part of our problem, and quick ability to fall asleep during feeding. now my supply is a bit out of control! I hope that you are able to get his weight up soon!
I'm sure the answer is on here somewhere but I've read through 9 pages so far and haven't seen it so I'm asking again. I know it's okay to drink when BFing, and I know there are a bunch of rules like wait a certain amount of time in between and check your alcohol content with those special tests, etc, etc, but what I really wanna know is when is it okay to just have a glass of wine or beer with dinner? Like do you have to wait until baby is a certain age or does it matter?

I just had a glass of wine with dinner and had to nurse almost immediately after (yay, cluster feeds).
For those who had to supplement, did you use a bottle or a syringe? The syringe is a real pain the ass! The doctor said use that or a little cup but I feel most of it ended up all over him instead of in his tummy.
I hated the syringe. Most of it came back up. We used a spoon when she was real sleepy and a bottle a couple times she'd take it. Luckily we didn't need the extra for too long cause she wasn't always willing to stay awake for it or be into it.

We were instructed to do 2 full ounces every 2 hours so I use bottles. If you're only doing a little bit each feed this input isnt as helpful.

I tested my limit with the strips. I can have 2 beers and have no alcohol in my system, after the 3rd, some showed. So I pretty much have a beer every night with dinner already lol. Ds is one month today.
That's encouraging! I need to do this! For peace of mind at least.

IMO the test strips are a bunch of crap. It is best when babies are this little to have your drink while or just after they nurse. Here is a great link to kellymom.com about it. The younger the baby the less able they are to metabolize it. kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/lifestyle/alcohol/

I'm here to vent about night feeding again. Solid start and latch lead to an awake, screaming baby who won't get past munching on my nipple. This feed is going on an hour with one 5 min catnap and lots of latching/relatching. I think she just wants on the boob when with me. DH is up walking the house with her now to try and settle....she'll quiet for a bit. Anyone else have a child that won't ever pull themselves from the boob? I get worried she needs more but then can't get her on. MOTN feedings are something I dread. When will this improve? Ever?

Did she start off swallowing frequently (every 1-2 sucks) and slow down? It could be that she does just want on the boob and comfort suck - which can be annoying for you but great for your supply and she is still getting some milk. Sometimes DS will do this and I just settle in on the couch and let him go until he's asleep. Not the most ideal solution when you just want sleep.

I asked a LC this yesterday. She said that drinking can start immediately, no need for baby to reach a certain age. She said to wait one to two hours per glass or wine or beer before nursing. I haven't tried if yet because I dont usually have two hours between feeds right now, and I would want to wait two hours in between.

Yup. Sometimes it is this after a feeding. My nipples just couldn't take it last night but we did it. I'm trying to hold off on night bottles to regulate supply (talked to an LC yesterday and she mentioned 4-6 weeks the supply should even to demand so I'm aiming to get that far with a day bottle here and there if needed) My milk is actually plentiful at the moment, So I'm thankful but need production to even out by slowing on the right especially.
Thanks for your reply. I often post here when I'm feeling alone and like giving up in the night. Things often brighten for me with the light of day! I hope you got some sleep. I'm crawling back in bed now.
hopefulreturn I completely understand the feeling of being alone. Just know you aren't. There's a good bet there is someone around at anytime of the day and night on here

I cannot say enough about supplemental nutrition systems (sns). It allows baby to get supplement while still nursing and stimulating milk production.
Cluster feeding is driving me crazy. From 1pm on he wants to do nothing but sit at the boob. Which is ok but then he spits up almost every hour. We've tried everything else to calm him and nope, he would just like to keep gorging himself and then spit milk from everywhere.
So our first attempt at feeding DS2 a bottle of pumped milk was a fail. (I was really full last night on the side that tends to plug, so I pumped after a feeding in the hopes that MH could take the next shift.) No. Absolutely not. He cried at the bottle until, finally, I came in to nurse him. Then he cried until my milk let down.
I have an extremely fast flow and a very forceful letdown. Think it has anything to do with that? We used Avent (which worked with our other kids) but the nipple is the slowest flow. Would you buy faster flow nipples, try different bottles, or just keep introducing at different times?
I can't stop crying (damn hormones). After a visit to the pediatrician I found out baby T isn't pooping because I'm not producing enough milk. I was told to breast feed, then pump and supplement with formula every two hours. How am I even supposed to enjoy my time with her? When am I suppose to sleep. I feel like I'm on the verge of a breakdown and she's only 8 days old!

I don't know if this is similar but my LO will start & stop but still maintain suction, I have to either jiggle squeeze his hand or compress Breast to squirt some in to remind him WTF we are doing.

hugs. I feel you. I just burst into tears telling DH how bad things were with Dd, this new LO brings up so many feeling from pp with dd. you will manage, it won't be easy but you can do it.
