Does anyone else have a child that will not unlatch? She can fall asleep on the boob and then be screaming when I pull her Off. She even threw up while still eating this morning. I know she's over eating (yes, I've read breastfed babies can't), but is this normal?
Eta: I just put a call into an LC. I feel like I need constant help!
He has to be in a dead sleep so I can unlatch him. Also, his suck reflex is ridiculous. I tried pulling down on his chin and that just makes him clamp down, so I try to stick my pinky in his mouth to break the suction and that doesn't always work.
Has anyone been using a pacifier yet? I nursed tonight then she woke up wanting to nurse again when I was getting in the shower so I had Hubs offer the paci which kept her calm until I showered. Then I get dressed and she went right back to nursing like a champ. She is only 5 days old but she loves nursing, I already have a strong supply and only plan to use it in instances like that for right now.
I have been trying to hold out until 2 weeks, I don't really think it will interfere with bf as I already occasionally use a shield because if damage from shallow latch. I have been letting Lil Nelson suck on finger & we use the swing to soothe during the day but at night I can't put him down unless he is KO milk drunk.
hopefulreturn my nipples are pretty sore too. I bought the medela nipple shells and have been wearing those since birth. I think they have helped a ton bc they let your nips get air. I recommend them. They are not a nipple shield, they are shells and you wear them in between feeds.
+1 visiting nurse gave me these today I love them!

Yeah he falls asleep and doesn't unlatch sometimes and when I try to unlatch he just gets hangry all over again. I can't wait to get past all these latching issues so we can use a paci.
Feeling optimistic. With the supplementing our boy is back over his discharge weight. And today we went back to try to be on the breast. And he latched with no problems earlier today and had a great feeding. Later though he fell asleep latched on in about five minutes so I pumped again. But hey, we are Improving slowly but surely.
Breast feeding was going great until yesterday. When she latches on my right boob it feels like she is stabbing me. The pain lasts for the first few minutes and then subsides. My left boob is fine and the pain is just in my nipple. Could she have a bad latch just on one side?

Do you see any white spots on your nipple? It sounds like thrush...does baby have spots on tongue?
Q to mamas who breastfeed and pump ... So yesterday was our first successful day breastfeeding 3x.. The rest pumped milk bottle - for past few weeks been exclusive pumping --- now I was able to breastfeed her this morning and she is asleep on my chest right now - if i pump now -- and she wants to feed in an hour and I try breastfeeding -- will there be enough milk in there for her? ( in my breast - after pumping ) Soery if it doesn't make sense , sleep deprived and typing w one habd

I don't but what is the treatment for it?
Typically a prescription of Diflucan and sometimes a topical APNO cream.
Could it be your letdown since it goes away? Mine felt like needles in the beginning, but I'm struggling to remember if it was from the very beginning or it showed up a few weeks in...

There should be, bUT you could also offer an oujce after she nurses to make sur...the more milk removed the more you make.

How often is she feeding? I would say yes there will be something there because your pump is not going to get out what baby can. There will always be some left. I have found to get my supply up if I pump for about 10 minutes right before I BF it works out pretty well.
Also --> now that we got her to breastfeed no nipple shield I now notice a red spot on one of my nipples .. It also hurts from that side , I thiufht pain was ripped skin on my areola from using too high of a setting On my pump (long story ..) but maybe her latch is incorrect ? AHHH, the left side is fine no pain just pressure , but the right is painful and now I have that ! Gosh this breastfeeding is hard stuff ...

Is your nipple cracked anywhere? That shit hurts.
Definitely cracked. I saw the crack. Jesus it hurts!
Just found out LO has a tounge tie hence why she's not getting my milk and why my supply is low. Now we have to choose between getting it cut or the laser option. Any advice or experience with either of these?
We opted to have Miles' cut. He was sorry of fussy the next day but didn't take long to recover. He nursed right after. I think @aliam20 did the laser.
shayr, was your supply always low? I wonder if a tongue tie is our LO's issue. I never felt my milk come in though.
Yeah I guess it has. She's just has not pulling enough and I haven't been religious about pumping. the LC said she has no reason to suspect a low supply issue and that pumping 8 times a day and getting the tie fixed I should be able to nurse fine. I would def get your LO checked. The LC in the hospital missed it so I'm had I followed up after seeing she wasn't gaining weight until I started supplementing.
I have to go back to work at 3 months. When should I start building my freezer stash? I have some stored now but that will likely be used by the time he goes to daycare.
Right now I pump 8-11 oz a day in 2-3 pumping sessions. We are using 8 ozs daily though so we can get a guaranteed amount in him per day (because of his early feeding and weight gain issues). I read that at 3 months they are drinking 7-10oz per session so I really need to be pumping a lot.
I use fenugreek, do a power pump at least 2X a week (down from 2X a day at first but I really should be doing this more), just started baking lactation cookies, and I'm pumping at my highest output times, still I can't seem to get more than 5-6oz (at the most) in one pumping session. Most of the day I'll get 1.5-3oz.
abvintage I actually never had a large freezer stash. When I went back I really only had enough for the first day. She was a large kid and took 4-5 oz every 3 hours max. I think 7-10 oz would be formula, not BM, that's a lot of BM for a baby to eat. Here is a calculator but most BF babies will be only eating 20-30 oz in 24 hours at 3 months. kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/pumping/milkcalc/
Then after the first day she just had my pumped milk from the day before.
I'm feeling very discouraged about breastfeeding after our visit to the pediatrician today. DD had lost 9% upon leaving the hospital. We saw the pediatrician 2 days after she came home and were encouraged to find that she had gained 2.5 ounces. Eight days later, she has only gained 1 ounce since that last appointment and is nowhere near her birth weight (born at 8lb1oz, now only at 7lbs8oz).
Breastfeeding is unbelievably painful. It is toe-curling agony at times. We had DD checked for a tongue tie, and none of the lactation consultants think she has one and neither does the pediatrician, so I don't think that's our issue. They've also said her latch is okay, although it's hard to get her on deep enough because her mouth is so tiny and her tongue is on the shorter side.
I had such high hopes that breastfeeding would go better this time around, but I'm feeling really down about this. I was willing to try to push through the pain, but if DD isn't even getting enough milk to gain weight, I don't know if it's even worth it. We go back to the pediatrician for a weight check on Friday and I'm fully expecting to hear that we need to start supplementing heavily with formula. In the meantime, the pediatrician has asked us to get in at least 9-10 feeds per day and track her feeding schedule.
aydee, DS went from 7lbs 10oz at birth the 6lbs 4oz! He wasn't getting enough milk. Not only that but BFing was and still is really painful for me. Here is what I did and it might be an option for you. After we tried formula SNS and then stopped because my milk had finally come in, then found out he was being starved and losing ass tons of weight I gave DS formula for a 2-3 feedings throughout the day. We did formula because he was also jaundice and needed to be pooping more. When he is given a bottle I pump. Right now DH gives him breastmilk bottles 2X a day and I pump during those times. I also pump about 45min-1hr30min after I feed him. You can also pump for a up to 10 minutes before and after every feeding (really what is recommended is that you pump until 2-5min after you stop dripping.)
What I like about the bottles is I know 2X a day he is getting 4 ozs (right now, earlier on it was 2-2.5 ounces). I also ordered this scale to monitor his weight every few days and do my own weighted feedings. It's been great.
I find even with watching his latch it hurts like a mother f'er and there is no way I'm getting around that, but those few times a day I pump it's actually a break for me. They really do get better about eating so stick with it.
Side note: we also tried SNS which a lot of people love because of fear of bottles but it made DS actually worse about BFing. He got lazy on the latch and was looking for the SNS tube and not wanting to latch when it was just breast available. I cried and cried over giving him a bottle but he went from breast to bottle really seamlessly so far. I will note that I make sure I'm not even around when he gets a bottle so he's not associating me in any way with a bottle. Talk to a LC and look into the SNS system. Do what you need to do to feed the baby but don't give up on BFing.

Huge to you. We've struggled with weight gain too. It's stressful! I hear you on the pain of breastfeeding. It sucks!

I have the cracked nips & am looking for any advice too heal them. I have been using ice/saline/lanisoh as directed on kellymom

I use Lansinoh at every feeding. Every single one. I also express some milk after he's done and let it air dry before I put on the Lansinoh. It does help a lot. The medela version of Lansinoh gives pretty immediate relief too so I use that overnight if it's particularly bad (dealing with small mouth and large nipples. I have one crack that keeps opening back up no matter what)
abvintage neither of my girls ever took more than 6 ounces at a time, one was formula fed, one breastfed. 7-10 ounces sounds insane to me. I don't have experience building a stash, but I'd think having two days worth frozen would be good. You'd have enough for the first day, a back up day, plus you'd constantly be replenishing your stash.
astheria, our situation was pretty much the same... including birth weight & amount lost at hospital! I hope everything is still working out with you, we have made it almost 2 weeks now here.
Also, BFing makes me so sleepy. Maybe bc the body releases oxytocin & prolactin? They both promote relaxation.
Ok so yesterday was complete hell. Over the last week A was starting to get fussier than she had been before. The only thing that would calm her was BFing, which I would always do. Well yesterday starting at midnight she started to cue to feed all.the.time. I was up until 6 pretty much just nursing. Then during the day she would only tolerate an hour and a half off the boob, sometimes only twenty mins, before she would start screaming bloody murder. And she would be on my boob for a long time, like up to forty mins. We had her three week appt. yesterday and I told the pedi about this. He recommended a paci and told me that she was nursing for comfort and only needed food every 2-3 hours.
I was kind of hesitant to introduce the paci because I wanted to wait a full month buuut....MH told me to nap and he would try the paci. It didn't work and he brought her to me screaming. This then caused me to break down. Well we tried the paci again after that and it worked like a charm. Amazing and magical. We had a happy last night. And then overnight she has slept happily for three hour stretches, nursed happily with no fussiness beforehand.
As a result of her comfort nursing extravaganza though I think it may have given me an oversupply (is that possible?) Because overnight I have to experienced engorgement for the first time. That shit hurts. Sorry that might have been the longest post ever... TLDR; baby was comfort nursing to the point of driving me insane, introducing a paci seemed to save us.
