cookiesandwine, I just retread what I wrote and it maybe came off a bit snarky. I was not meaning that. I am sorry if that is how you read it too. I think you will be fine. I doubt the occasional bath would do any harm. As for the dirt and oils, in my mind, the occasional bath would take care of that. We never had an amber necklace, but I do work a lot with gem stones. I don't think you have much to worry about stone wise. I would check whatever is stringing the amber together though, just to make sure it is not fraying. That is where I see them failing first.
starfishy Mirabelle still wears her Amber teething necklace because she likes it. She had a fit when they made her take it off at gymnastics. Maybe he likes wearing it too?
