Yaaay, surgery is done! They are taking forever to let me go back and sit with DH now though... the surgeon was out here an hour ago telling me how it went! I would like to see my husband, pleaseandthanks.

I need some of your bright ideas! My 60-year old MIL is a semi-hoarder (she's not at Buried Alive status, but her house is chock full of crap) and DH and I need to get her a birthday present. Aside from a gift card - are there any other practical ideas you may have that won't take up space and collect dust in her house? (Right now I'm leaning towards a restaurant GC, because that's all I can come up with)

A gift card to the Container Store??

J/k...maybe something edible, so it won't stay in her house forever.  Edible Arrangement, or one of those baskets with fancy sausages and cheeses?  Does she like to get out and do things?  You could take her somewhere as her gift (like to a cooking class, or something experiential).

Oh man, my MIL is the same way.  Also, restaurants are a no-go because FIL had gastric bypass so they hardly ever go out to eat.  How about a nice piece of jewelry.  I know it is *stuff*, but at least it is small!  Does she travel?  Could you get her a night or a weekend at a local resort?  How about sending food?  Our friends had food delivered  to us from Jack Stack Barbecue.  I had never heard of it but it was so delicious and came frozen so she doesn't have to eat it right away.

I did NOT sleep last night. Between my right leg randomly being in excruciating pain and my SO snoring due to being sick, I said fuck it and watched Netflix all night.

I did get an hour or two this morning. I may go take a nap now because I'm VERY irritable.

Ditto others who suggested food-related gifts.

Does she live close enough that you guys could pick her up and take her out for a nice dinner? Or maybe do a day out together with some sort of activity you can all do together?

Or maybe a spa day?

I think we're going to take her out to dinner on Saturday and then I'm going to get her a GC to get her nails done. We get along, but I don't know if I'm ready to do an "alone" activity without my husband around (like a spa day).

+100 to the no sleep.  It's been all week that I seem to be up multiple times throughout the night.  It's very annoying, and causing me to drink way too much coffee.

I have fibromyalgia and hypermobility syndrome. Pain is a regular occurrence for me, but this was just bizarre last night. Luckily Aleve took care of it.

Speaking of no sleep, DS has woken up two nights and one early morning in a row. On each occasion he has told us that the owl woke him up. He sleeps with a sound machine on full volume about a foot from his head so there is no way he is legit hearing an owl. I waver back and forth between being creeped out about the "owl" and wanting to strangle the damn thing.

Maybe?  I have no clue.  Last night at 1:30 am he told me that the owl woke him up.  When I questioned him further he told me that the owl knocked on his door.  I just dropped it and didn't ask anymore questions.  He's just turning 2 so his verbal skills are limited anyway.

That was my thought. Maybe it's a dream about an owl but he doesn't have the language to really explain what he means.

I know!!  I'm temporarily running the after-school program where I work, and I was thinking..."Hmm...I wonder how the parents would feel if I tried this game out with the kids."  Bahahaha.

They do play a similar game called "Cows in the Field" or something like that, where you have to lay down and pretend you're a dead cow, and the person who is "it" has to make you laugh without making any sound (just making faces), and the last "dead cow" on the ground is the winner.  It's really weird.
