If anybody is interested, I occasionally volunteer for a program called Cooking Matters cookingmatters.org/
They teach cooking classes to both kids and adults, usually from lower income brackets. The menus are based on an average food stamp budget. They also teach grocery shopping and meal planning skills. The classes I usually help with were aimed at daycare providers, since those were on Saturdays. Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there.
As for the carts, judge the fuck out of my cart. I am a good cook, and an excellent grocery shopper, but my husband has Crohn's disease, and when he's having a bad week, anything high fiber is not good for him (ie vegetables and fruits) If all he wants to eat is stuff like pizza rolls, pop tarts, and sugary cereal, you bet your ass that's what I'm going to buy him, since he won't eat otherwise, and he's already on the very low end of a healthy weight. Also, even when he's feeling good, he needs to eat like 3000+ calories a day to maintain his weight. I need to eat like 1900. So often when we have a meal, I eat the main part of it, and then we add in stuff like frozen dinner rolls, or a side of mac and cheese for him since those are easy ways to add in extra calories without being too filling.
Lastly, when I was a kid, I was a super super picky eater. My mom could cook the healthiest best meal, and I'd refuse to eat it, and would throw up if I ate something I didn't like. So, fish sticks and tater tots it was. Somehow, I didn't die, and am in good health as an adult.
