Sorry, but I think the bolded is fucked up. ETA How are you going to force an adult to go to college?
I might have worded that too strongly. Going to college is the norm for us. My parents and DH's Mom didn't go to college. But DH, myself and all 4 of our combined siblings, their spouses and all of our friends went to college. We intend to raise our child with the assumption that they will go to college. Can we force them? Of course not. I recognize that there are different paths in life and that not everyone has to go to college but to us, college is the norm.
My parents had said from day 1 that I would go to community college to get my AA and then onto a university. I went only because they paid and I lived rent free. I never got a degree and quit after 2 years. I HATED college. They both had degrees and were so disappointed that none of their children or grandchildren had them.
On the buying your kids a car topic, I think there are a lot of options besides brand new and complete junker. I think 25k for a new car is insane for a teenager, even if the parents can comfortably afford to spend that much. I think a brand new car valued at 25k may teach a little bit on entitlement to the kid. You can buy a great, reliable car for much less than that.
DH's first car was a Lexus. WTF kind of 16 year old kid needs a Lexus?
My first car was a 7 year old Dodge Neon. My dad went to a buy here pay here place, let me drive it for a month, and then let it get repo-ed while I was asleep. To teach me a lesson.
There was a girl in my class that got an escalade for her 16th birthday. One of our classmates keyed it so her parents took it away and gave her an Audi. I drove an '84 Honda Accord.
Ok, well obviously this is a UO on here, but unless she has a really good reason, I would not support DD not going to a 4 year college. I didn't know what I wanted to do, and I ended up going in a totally different path than my degrees, but I learned a lot in college. I think it's a right of passage and a time to experience new things, and grow up before just being out in the real world.
But I also grew up in an environment where not going to college really wasn't ever presented as an option. I went to a private high school where 98% of the class went on to college. And I'm sure it's how we'll raise DD, because that's just our life.
85% of graduates from my public high school went on to 4 year schools. I was one of the few that didn't. My counselor tried several times to talk me out of just going to community college and was actually mean about it once. Yeah that made me want to go to college less.
My very popular opinion is that I'm so glad @dorothyzborznak97 is active again!
Also haha, my kids aren't getting crap for college because I'll still be paying back my own loans.
Also also - my brother went to a tech school and is now an electrician. He makes way more money than I do and he likes his job. If the endgame is a successful career then college is certainly not the only option. If the endgame is expanding your intellect and broadening your worldview, then college might be right for you. The fact that certain careers require a college education should not be the only reason for attending.

College. Not paying. I don't even have a retirement fund. I mean, sure, if I get a real job and have money to spare, I'll help. But it's more likely to come from my parents.
Sex. They are getting birth control at 14. They don't have to take it, but it will be offered. Along with condoms.
Haven't caught up, but DH is watching TSN right now and I remembered what my UO is. Marshawn Lynch is a complete douchebag. Sorry Seahawks fans.
Ok, ok, you need to elaborate. I can understand if you don't like him...but why a douchebag? When I hear douchebag, I think of Kaepernick who kisses his fucking bicep or other players that do douche things but what don't you like about Marshawn?

I never cared about who was going to win the superbowl until Ballghazi and beast mode's media antics. Now I can't wait to see the Seahawks win.

How he's been acting with his media interviews. Simply showing up, saying the same bullshit line, just so he won't get fined. It's ignorant.

What's ignorant is the NFLs bullshit targeting of him. It's ok for the Patriots to cheat but not ok for Lynch to wear a certain hat at a press conference?

I don't really follow sports or players. I'll watch the major events, and kind of have favourite teams, but all in all I really don't care. I'd actually like to see Seahawks win on Sunday. I'm just sick of seeing the replays over and over of his arrogant behaviour. I mean part of your job as a professional athlete is going to be some press time, deal with it. Don't be an asshole.

He's a very quiet person. The media makes him nervous. If you followed sports you'd know that the NFL has been picking on him all season for it.

Not to mention that hat is made by new era which is a sponsor of the NFL!
I feel like you learn and appreciate more if you pay for it yourself.
We have decided to open savings accounts for our kids and not ever tell them about it. If they want something small, or have to pay us back for whatever, we will make them pay us. And then we will put it into that account for them.
Similarly, DH and I decided to enroll DS in the prepaid college program but not tell him about it. I want him to work hard and try to earn a scholarship to pay his own way. The prepaid plan will be a backup so we can help him if he needs it. But it still won't be us paying 100%.
We also will make him save a portion of his allowance/birthday/holiday money. In addition, I am considering making him pay "taxes" out of his allowance (which will be earned for doing chores/housework). I am all about teaching kids fiscal responsibility.

Did something happen in he past where the media hit a sensitive subject that made him go quiet? I understand the media can be harsh, and love to narrow in on a few people, whether it's athletes, celebrities, and politicians; that can be overwhelming and unnecessary, and I agree would cause those people to not want to give them the time of day because of it. But again, part of your job is press time, just do it and get it over with. Really, what's 5 minutes? I'm sure there are a lot of players out there that don't like talking to the media, but do it anyway. As everyone says on here all the time, he needs to put his big boy panties on and do his job.
DH says he's a fantastic football player, so I get why fans come to his defense.

I remember reading somewhere that he has some sort of phobia, or anxiety, when it comes to public speaking.

Shitty deal. Sorry I love you ladies, but I don't think we're going to see eye to eye on this one. Anyway, Go Seahawks!

Ohhhhh STAHP with the deflategate!
Ok Tom Brady. You're right, this isn't ISIS after all.
To summarise. I think we are all going to raise boys who know not to think they own a womans body or the power to use it. And girls who know not to get into risky situations.
How about we also raise our girls not to use power inappropriately?
