Here's our first weird question. I I am going for an ultrasound at 8w3d will it be a vaginal US or a regular one? Just want to know what to expect, I didn't have an ultrasound until 16 weeks last time.
Last pregnancy, I had one at 9 weeks and another at 10 weeks, both were vaginal. It was no big deal, easy-peasy. And I agree with the previous poster, was less uncomfortable than when you get a pap done.
My blood work for DS was done I think around 16 weeks.
I have also been asked if I want to insert the vaginal ultrasound.... I opted out of that one.
So my weird question.... anyone using essential oils? I have been having trouble sleeping, like up for a few hours every night . I have taken Benadryl and it helps but I didn't want to use that EVERY night. A friend of mine gave me some concoction that she makes. I called my OB and the nurse told me to just use the Benadryl and that she really isn't sure if the oils would be ok (she's apparently never been asked that... which surprised me) and that my OB was with patents so she couldn't ask. Anyone been given the OK to use them by their OB?
I am using essential oils to sleep, but I have them in a diffuser, not directly on my skin
What have your doctors told you about peanut butter? I see mixed things on it, and alllll I want right now is a huge PB&J lol
With DD, I craved PB and honey sandwiches. Ate them all of the time during my pregnancy and she is fine with no peanut issues. I honestly didn't even know not eating PB was a thing....
Thank you! It's weird to go from feeling so confident in my TTC knowledge to not knowing much about actually being pregnant lol I really hope you can get some relief soon! FX either the lotion or vinegar helps
Thank you! I'm still going to call the dr too and see what they say. I'll update when I know more
I had something similar to that happen to me after having my DD- it took MONTHS to go away and it stumped my PCP and an allergist (I did allergy testing). They ended up thinking that maybe I had PUPPS at the very end of my pregnancy and just chalked it up to dry skin (DD was born in January). Anyways, I used Aveeno 24 hour moisture and would use their Eczema relief lotion also when it was really bad. Those made it a little better! I don't think that PUPPS shows up until 2nd tri if I remember correctly though.
Does anyone know more about the genetic blood testing that they can do? When is it usually done? Are there certain tests that are better?
Be careful with these tests. My daughter had a Echogenetic Cardiac Focus at her 20 week ultrasound and it was recommended that we have the MaterniT21 for "peace of mind". The results of that test have caused a lot of undue stress, an extremely harsh, unnecessary meeting with a genetic counselor that essentially told us our child would have no quality of life, extra doctors appointments and blood test on a 4 month old baby. They are very accurate but chromosome abnormalities are not as simple as yes and no. My daughter has a chromosome abnormality and lives a perfectly normal life. She has hit all of her milestones and only shows one traditional symptom of her condition, which is not a big deal at all. The only reason to have the tests done, after my experience, is if you are going to terminate your pregnancy. I will not have it done this time. Also if you're not AMA or have an abnormal ultrasound the tests are not usually covered by insurance. They aren't cheap. I think I got a bill for $850, but I appealed due to the ultrasound and I think we still had to pay $150.
It starts off very scare tactic-ish but then does a good job of explaining why the tests are a screening vs. a diagnostic test, explains the lack of regulation of them, and calls into question the high accuracy rate that the manufacturers claim. The authors don't think the tests are all bad, just that women need to be more educated about their limitations.
Warning there are multiple mentions of pregnancy termination.

Listen, I get that you had a bad experience with your doctors and genetic testing. But this is a ridiculously ignorant thing to state as fact. There are plenty of other reasons people get these tests. Your experience is yours alone. It's fine to tell others to be cautious but to jump to this conclusion isn't okay.
I will be getting the genetic testing done again. I am 29, no history of abnormalities, and my insurance covers 100% of the cost. If the numbers to come back as cause for concern, we will do further testing. IF LO has any issues we will have a full, knowledgable staff of specialist on hand to deal with any issues that may arise.
I will be getting the test, and not to see if I should terminate.

This. Times a million.
Ditto both of these ladies. I just can't with this ignorance. Removing myself from this thread now.
As others have said, this is an awfully big conclusion to jump to. My doctor and hospital use it as an alternative to the NT Scan and quad screening. Should you receive a positive result, they require you to do an Amnio or CVS to confirm the results and have continued meetings with the genetic counselor before you make any decisions.
My my meeting with the genetic counselor prior to the test was great. She explained all of this. She covered the difference between an NT Scan and the DNA tests. She talked about the test's limitations and about the limitations of ultrasound based tests.
I am am sorry you had a bad experience, but don't blame the test. I am happy to hear that your daughter only has one classic symptom/trait of the genetic abnormality that she has. but there is no way for that test to know how many traits will show when an abnormality is found. And ultimately, someone on these boards could make a different decision than you, and it is their right to do so.

I am getting the test done because if anything were to come back abnormal I'd want to be able to get further screening done and have as much time as possible to connect with resources and educate myself about the genetic abnormalities that the test screens for. A screening is just that, a preliminary test to tell you if further evaluation is needed. And also, I'm pretty damn excited to know before Christmas if I'm team blue/pink/ or purple. With twins on the way and two other children I want as much time and information to prepare for these babies as I can get.

Also it will cost me about $100 for my insurance copay to get the test done. But we didn't do PGS testing on our embryos because it would have cost $4000. I think the $100 is a steal in comparison and a drop in the bucket of the IVF costs and worth the piece of mind it will give me knowing I have all the info.

My OB has a deal set up with one of the companies that if your insurance denies the claim that the most you will pay is $100. My RE also has an out of pocket deal for $150 with another company. I'm trying to decide which company is better but we are absolutely doing it.

housecarder - did they say anything about the tests being less accurate with twins? My doctor mentioned the tests but he says with twins he recommends the NT scan and then amino/further testing if something comes back that is concerning. It made sense to me because I wasn't sure they could get the chromosomes from each twin separately to determine where the issues were (if any). Same with sex, I was thinking they could only tell either all girls (if no Y chromosomes) or at least one boy (if there is a Y chromosome)
twobananas, while I haven't had twins I know some of the companies only offer the test for singletons and others are able to assess multiples. I believe Maternit21 is one of the brands used with twins.

The panorama test can only do single which is my OB's standard, but they said they have the maternit21 for twins. I think they isolate my DNA and each babies' DNA too from what I understand. Most of the sites are pretty vague but they said it will work. If the results can back positive for anything my OB does the NT and amino as well to confirm.

Actually I am now looking at some places where people have gotten the test and I'll only know for sure if both are girls (no Y) or at least one is a boy (Y is present). At least according to the Bump and Baby center message boards from people who have done it.
We have our first appointment at 9 weeks. Should I expect to hear the heartbeat? I thought so, but now after reading a few things, I'm not so sure.
They will probably attempt to find it with the Doppler. I wouldn't get upset if they don't find it though. Your uterus is still pretty low in your pelvis at this point and depending on how heavy you are or if your baby is in the front or back of your ute could determine what you can hear. I found one heartbeat today for a few seconds on my Doppler and I'm 9 weeks 6 days.

The midwife at my 9 week appt used an ultrasound machine to visualize my ute and track cardiac activity. It was not a high tech ultrasound machine, so there was no audio to listen to, but they could measure the HR.

Have you had an ultrasound yet? If not then they will prob do a dating ultrasound and you would absolutely be able to see the heartbeat and maybe hear it depending on their machine.

My first pregnancy, I had my first ultrasound (vaginal), and we could see the heart beating and they measured it. However, they were having issues with the machine (it was a portable one) and the battery died, so that is all we really got to see. They had me come back at 10 weeks, for another so they could go through everything they missed the first time, and we heard the heart beating then.
housecarder , this is my first appointment and ultrasound.
On the ultrasound you should at least be able to see it. Hearing it depends on the type of machine they have at this point. Also, you may be able to hear on Doppler, but a lot of docs don't check until 10 weeks of later. I had an appointment today (i am 8w4d ish) and my OB didn't even try because he didn't want to stress me out if he couldn't find it, but I have a home Doppler, so I will just check on my own late next week.
Does anyone have one of the at-home dopplers? I'm debating getting one to ease my nerves a bit, but not sure how reliable they are? Thinking it might actually make me more nervous if I can't find a heartbeat when I think I should. Thoughts?

I have one, but I never reached the point of being able to find a heartbeat. I'd go in with the expectation that you might not be able to find a heartbeat everytime or right away but that doesn't mean anything's wrong.
