LO out in public?

So at our first pediatrician appointment, the Dr. gave us her "fever lecture". Ya know, the whole you really don't want your baby to get a fever in the first two months because then you face the terrifying spinal tap (typing it, saying it, thinking about it makes me quiver). She even schedules the first two newborn well visits as her first appointments in the AM so there is less chance of any encounters with sick kids. After her lecture I am terrified to take the baby near anyone or anywhere out in public. I should also add that I am in the Northeast so it's fall here moving toward winter and it's cold and flu season. It's been an AMAZING fall with some beautiful November days, so I've been getting out and walking with DD either in the stroller or the k'tan, but in terms of doing anything else, I feel confined to the house. We ventured out as a family today and I did take her in a consignment shop. There were only like 2 other customers in there, and we were in and out in like 10 min, but it was still so nerve wracking for me. I am NOT a germophobe at all, but DH and I were lathering on the hand sanitizer after going in the store.
Is anyone else as paranoid as me? Are you taking your LO anywhere public (grocery store, travel, restaurants, etc.)? If you do take them out, do you wear them, take them in their car seats?
