holliberry28, I would start by trying to identify the reason he is having trouble going back down at 4am. Does he want to play? Is he overtired? Is he uncomfortable (wet diaper maybe?) Go from there in regards to what method you use. If he is up wanting to play - maybe he is getting too much sleep during the day - try to shorten naps maybe.
If he is overtired - try your best not to wake him when you feed him (no eye contact, no noise, no talking to him, etc.)
Uncomfortable - try changing his diaper (do this before feeding, it will be easier to not wake him), is he still hungry, maybe not getting enough to eat?
In my experience, if a baby can soothe themselves to sleep at bedtime, they can usually do it MOTN as well unless something is bothering them. If you are looking for self-soothing options - you could try introducing a bedtime lovey, or white noise, or a musical toy/mobile.
I take him now to Tribeca Pediatrics which has a few different offices in Manhattan and Brooklyn and they are very pro CIO. I called the nurse and she suggested keeping at it for up to a week, put him at bed at night and then come back in the morning. Period. Ugh. I said what about 5 am wakeups and her response was, do you want him up at 5 am? No, then come back at 6.
Also, mrsdee1982, that troublesometots/preciouslittlesleep site has been like a bible to me, and it sucks because it seems to conflict with what my pediatrician is saying. I know she's all for waiting til 6 mos but I just don't think that's right for us. It's crazy how many times I reread her posts and I'm still struggling with this stuff. Thank you though, I read that article again haha.
