Both of my kids were pretty close to two when we got rid of theirs. For my son, he just didn't ask for it at nap time one day and we just didn't give him one after that. Nap time became really hard without the paci, but bedtime was fine. With my daughter we took her to build a bear and she put her paci in a bear that she picked. She carried that bear everywhere with her for three or four days, but didn't ask for her paci anymore.
DH did the same as cnbpa3027 while I was out of town. He says he didn't need it for a nap so he hid them and when E asked just distracted him. He said the first few bedtimes had some tears but now he is binkie free.
We will be approaching this over spring break. DD turns 2 in March. I did read somewhere to wait until they were 2 because they can understand better. I don't remember where and can't say whether or not it's true, but it stuck in my mind.
DH and I decided we could never parent if we weren't teachers. Everything is "we can do that over spring break" or " potty training will happen over the summer". I can't imagine doing all of these things without those breaks in work!
For us, two was a really good age to take it away. I don't know how easy it would have been if we had tried sooner. I know 18 months was really rough for my son, so i don't think KT worked for him. And at pretty much exactly two, my daughter was able to understand putting her paci in the bear. It might have worked a month or two before, by probably not much earlier than that.
