I will have a couple people who can cover if any of my patients need emergency treatment. But, for routine visits, it won't work for someone to cover for me for lots of logistical and financial reasons. That is why I went back 4 weeks after having DS. I'm going to splurge this time though and take 6 weeks off I think.
Are you a dentist? My dentist is taking off like 3 weeks I think. Y'all are badasses.
Haha, yes. There just isn't a great option for maternity leave, so a lot of it is out of necessity. It can be a really family friendly career though, so I won't complain.

babyzebra, wow, that's some serious dedication to your patients! I'm a doctor and I plan on taking 3 months. Of course I only see patients one day a week so I won't need to reschedule that many, but a 3 month maternity leave is pretty standard in my field, even among those who see patients full-time.
babyzebra, Wow, that's really tough! Yes, you should definitely take 6 weeks off! It was really hard as a teacher to be gone 6 weeks because I had to do hundreds of extra hours of working preparing for my sub (I was a life skills special education teacher so each child had to have individual plans for every day while I was gone), but it didn't impact financials or anything like that, just hard to plan for. That must be tough! My OB just had a baby and she only took 4 weeks off. Apparently her patients were freaking out while she was out....so sad, medical professionals have lives, too! frecklesnbrains, I am glad you are going to be able to take the 12 weeks!
I get maternity leave in the sense that I can take a bunch of sick days in a row, which normally isn't allowed (I'm a teacher). I am going to play it by ear in June and see how much time I end up needing, if any. But June is obviously great timing for me. Normally I do professional development seminars and such in the summer, but I am not signing up for anything this year. I might take a few weeks in September, but I haven't decided yet.

I plan on telling my coworkers next week (I'll be almost 13 weeks). I'd like to wait longer but one of my partners us leaving at the end of the month so we'll be talking a lot of scheduling stuff for next year. Sadly I think I'll only get 6 weeks off (better than the 4 I had for CD, but at least then I wasn't PP or trying to breastfeed), but I'll probably work properly for a while when I go back
If you work, when do you plan on telling your employer? Is there a "normal" week to tell them?
I don't know! I was originally going to wait until after Christmas break. But now that I am feeling more confident that things are ok and I'm asking my boss if I can leave during my planning every two weeks or so, I'm wondering if I should just bite the bullet in the next week or two. I guess I'll just blurt it out at the right time. I'm also holding back because of my students, however. I would rather they know pretty late, and if I tell my coworkers the chances of a kid overhearing some incriminating conversation fairly quickly are sky high. Always lurking about, those teenagers.
txmommy14 that does sound like a lot of extra work for you planning for each kid each day...and of course a lot of it needs to happen at the very end of pregnancy when you have 0 energy. Luckily, I didn't have to do too much planning stuff like that, but, the freaking out of the masses while you're out for a measly few weeks is obnoxious. I think I'll have a much easier time shutting that down and putting people in their place this time!
frecklesnbrains I'm really glad that you're taking 3 months! That's been the experience of most of my physician friends too (except for the ones in residency). I think the difference is maybe because physicians tend to work more in large group practices and hospitals and dentists tend to work alone or with just 1 partner. There are definitely dentists out there who will take 3 months, but that comes with a lot of compromises that most aren't willing to make.

It depends. Private practice, especially if smaller, can be more like dentistry. You have to pay your overhead fees while not making money. Makes it a lot more difficult to afford time off

Yes. I'm fortunate to work for a big academic medical center so my colleagues will cover me. I think I can actually be paid the clinical portion of my salary if I schedule some make-up clinics before and after delivery, which shouldn't be bad if I spread them out over several months. My research salary will probably only be paid for 4 weeks but I think I can make it 12 weeks by using short term disability. The truth is research never really stops so I'm sure I'll be working part time from home a bit. But it's really, really flexible so that's good.
I always ALWAYS sleep on my back.... not looking forward to this at all Im planning to stay on my back until I'm uncomfortable.... which I'm hoping will be not until 3rd trimester. We'll see...
I used to put a pillow behind me so I could still kind of be on my back but still on my side if that makes sense. I can only sleep on my back and it was really hard to side sleep with DD. my arms fall asleep and my legs. So the pillow thing helped. I could kind of be on my back but not all the way. It was a compromise
In regards to telling work....I waited until like 15 weeks with DD because I felt guilty telling work before my family and that timed up with Easter that year. No one was surprised as they were all suspicious and discussing behind my back..haha. This time I'm going to tell around 12 weeks right after my NT scan. As long as everything looks normal I'm going to tell my boss and immediate team. The office isn't big but I'll let the news trickle down after that especially with the holiday party quickly approaching. I hate feeling like I"m living a lie all the time so I'll be glad to tell the people I share a room with for 10 hours a day.
I think I started one right after finding out the sex, around 20 weeks. I remember my DH and I walking into Babies R' Us and laughing because we were SO overwhelmed and so shocked by all of the baby gear. We left without registering, went home and bought the book "Baby Bargains" or something like that-it's a book that comes out each year with a review of baby items. Did lots of research and figured out what we REALLY wanted/needed, then made it for real. After that, I was still constantly tweaking it and changing my mind on things up until my shower.
This time, I made a private Amazon "wish list" just so I can organize for myself what I want to buy (new diaper bag, extra camera for monitor, double stroller, new bottle, new baby book, baby girl month stickers, and fun things like that).
This reminded me that I need to look into getting another camera for ours. I can't seem to find our exact model though. I'm wondering if o could get the same brand with a similar model if it would work? Anyone know anything about this? We have a summerinfant one so I'm wondering if they all link up as long as they're the same brand.
Edit to say: as far as work goes last time I told really early but mostly because I was spotting and had to leave for extra appointments. I think most people waited until the start of second trimester where I worked though. I taught as well.
