jjh1119 the girl I am looking at is a doula/photographer too! The pictures are very important to me, but DH seems to think that his SIL could take the pictures *eye roll* I think he will end up being fine with the cost in the end, but maybe right now he's just a little overwhelmed with all the decisions we're making for this and 1st Tri screenings, etc.

broadwaymama I am so sorry, this is a terrible time for his company to do that! Here's hoping that starting his own company will result in better job opportunities for him!

There is a squirrel outside my window legit staring me down.
Just happy to be working from home. Hiding this bloat/possible showing in work clothes is not really working out for me anymore. I want to wait at least another week (appointment tomorrow!) before telling my boss.
Related to the previous question, I think when you tell really depends on the situation at work and your own comfort level. I'd also think about any review or bonus evaluation, if applicable.
Today is my first day back in the office after the break and I'm miserable so far. Tired, nauseous, and cold because they set the temp at arctic here usually. I really want my bed right now!
Also, can anyone tell me what preggie pops taste like? Every pregnancy nausea thing I've tried tastes horrible so I don't want to buy them if I'm going to try one, gag, and spit it out,
I liked the prefigure pops! They come in a lemon and berry flavor. I think they helped.

Yes, I it's a lot. I advocate patience with your H because before I entered the bump/TCF world, I'd never heard of a doula and it definitely sounds hokey at first. If he hadn't been educated about what they actually do, and it sounds from his comments like he had no idea, I'm not surprised he resists the idea/cost. If he Googled it, he might have gotten a scary article about cases where crunchy, poorly-educated doulas convinced patients not to get needed interventions. That spooked me. He'll come around when he understands what you actually get from a good doula, hopefully. I hope this doesn't come off lecture-y, I just identify with where he might be, because I've been there.

You're not coming off as lecture-y at all, and after I calmed down, I agree... I just need to have patience with him. This is not his comfort zone, he doesn't know the lingo or have the background knowledge that I have from lurking TB/TCF. I plan to go to the interview tomorrow night, and I'll be honest and say hey, MH isn't sure about this. And I need to do more research so I can give him facts and statistics about how a doula can help us.

I have a friend who does birth photography and I keep telling DH how I would LOVE that, he thinks it's weird. I think having great pics of your babe right away and the first moment they're handed to you is so special though!
DH got temporarily laid off yesterday. I spent the whole day freaking out and crying. I am so mad! How could you do this to a family right before the holidays?! However the silver lining may be coming through because this has given him a kickstart on starting his own company. I'm scared but happy at the same time. Carpentry is so unreliable when you work for another company. One house restoration pulls its contract and BAM! You can't afford Christmas for your family!! I'm just trying to breathe and make it through even though I'm furiously mad and depressed in the inside.
I'm so so sorry! Is he thinking about starting his own carpentry business?

This post just reminded me I have some and now I'm sucking on one. I like them!

I know nothing about doulas, so virginiaorjohn I hope you'll share what you learn! I'm a bit curious now. As a physician I have always had a very medicalized view of childbirth and thought all I would care about was bringing baby safely into the world without complications for either me or him. But, fortunately 90% of births are uncomplicated, and now that I'm on the other end I think to myself - if I'm lucky to be part of that 90% then it would be nice if there were ways to make it a more pleasant experience.
broadwaymama, ugh that SUCKS about your DH's job. Best of luck to him for his future plans!
Related to the when-to-register: Do I have to register at all?
I know people will ask, but probably not many--small family, and our showers probably have little things like onesies, not big stuff.
I also kinda just don't want to.
I mean, only people like my parents would spring for something like a crib, and they would just ask, right?
I certainly don't see why you should if you don't want to. The whole purpose is that people get you what you need, not double up, etc. If you don't need it for your own convenience, why bother? Personally I'm definitely registering because I'm so overwhelmed by how much stuff babies need. Registering helps me keep it straight, and also lets me see where I might be overlapping items where you really only need one or the other.

I was just thinking maybe I should learn something about doulas! virginiaorjohn yes please share what you learn from the interview!

You certainly don't have to. The only reason I would recommend it is for the completion discounts. But if you don't care about that, then don't register. We had friends who refused any and all showers because it just isn't her thing, and she didn't register anywhere. I didn't think a thing of it.
broadwaymama, so sorry to hear your H's news and what shitty timing! I hope that this turns out to be a positive change for your family and that you're back on your feet in no time!
ArgyleEnigma, you definitely don't have to register but I'll mention that a lot of stores offer a completion discount so it may be worth looking into just for that reason and to start a small registry for yourself and close family/friends to use. I'm a STM and won't be having a shower this time, but I'm definitely planning to do an amazon registry for myself to use so I can save a few bucks.
Ah! Dreaming, thank you for mentioning FSA! I have the paperwork sitting on my table, and I need to look into it. Luckily the paperwork is due 2 days after my US next week, so I can be confident that we will need that $$ to pay for delivery.
Hooray for a good ultrasound virginiaorjohn ! I think your H doesn't quite understand the role of a doula. Ask him if he would like your mother massaging his balls while he's in pain. also you should be able to use your flex spending account to pay for a doula.
My DS just took a one hour nap. Doesn't he know I had napping and resting planned for 3 hours? Ugh. Letting him hang out in there for nor because I just. Can't.
I feel silly typing the above because I just became a stay at home mom a few months ago...and obviously you can't nap at work! I need a break from the kid though!
