I had a miscarriage in October and for a lot of reasons I took a break from TB right afterward. Since I was taking a bump break I spent DAYS and WEEKS searching for a place where I could read more about what I was going through and talk about it with others. Most forums were pretty inactive. The majority of sites connected to thriving forums were filled with so much misinformation based in old wives tales and anecdotes, but the science was missing or glossed over. Plus the pink... there was so much pink. The good information is out there in bits and pieces, but you really have to search for it. Now that the bump is all rainbows and sugar kisses there is going to be one less semi-REAL (I say semi because the forums aka you guys were the only REAL part of TB) place for people to go when they have suffered a devastating loss, TTC, struggles with infertility, and so on. There are other people out there like me who desperately need a place for support with honesty and good information. As NariaDreaming said, we have a wealth of that here. We have a chance to all work together to build the site that we all hoped was out there at one point and hopefully one where we aren't pissed off or laughing about the articles in their newsletter.
--- Tot, but I just wanted theophania to know....I'm developing a HUGE gbcb crush on you lady. I wish I had big squishy boobs to hug you with. You are an extremely purposeful thoughtful lady.
LOVE The Stork Myth because I think it applies to all the groups, including TTTC and loss families. There are myths and misconceptions surround us at every stage of this, right?

I also like the idea of adding the "It Takes A Forum" tagline.
I think we have already shown ourselves to be a legitimate group. Why should we have to depend on another site (no offense ProBoards) to host us? Why can't we be our own entity? I absolutely love the thought of member driven content. I think all the BS "articles and research" we were stuck with on the dump is why we ended up with so many newbies looking for glitter to be blown up their bums. It was just to pull in drive-by's and make it look full to attract more advertisers. There are so many members here who are accomplished, educated, experienced, and wanting to help others go through what they went through. They deserve a venue and an opportunity to to that, as the dump failed to do.

To be clear- we're not looking to move the forums to private hosting any time in the near future ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$) but to add a site with content, and obviously a link from the site to our existing community here, with a matching theme
We're averaging 350,000+ page views a day. To host a community of this size independently using existing cloud-based software (think Vanilla) we are talking a cost of $3500+ a month.

I'm not sure about your technical background, but I can assure you: We actually do "have to depend on another site to host us." Forum platforms (like ProBoards and Vanilla Forums) are not simple to build, maintain, and manage. It would cost major amounts of money to have a custom forum system built for our community. Major amounts of money that I'm assuming this community doesn't want to fork over.
In the future, I'd imagine the goal is to outsource our forum software, but to have a custom theme (or skin) applied so that it matches the (still theoretical) website.
As for a name, I'm still thinking on it. If we want to be a competitor in the broader market, then the name needs to have mass appeal while not infringing upon any current copyright or trademark and still having a top-level domain available. That's a tall order!

Oh, I have no tech background! I just meant it would be nice to be (for example) "www.thestorkmyth.com" as opposed to storkmyth.proboards.com.

In your theoretical, we could easily do forums.thestorkmyth.com with the existing proboards infrastructure. That's only like a $50/year investment (roughly)

Honest Concepts Honest Conception Not Your Mama's Forum Beyond the Stork Behind the Stork The Family Tree Ties that Bind - the thought behind this is that there are things that tie us all together: the desire for children, the loss of children, bonding over our stories, etc. there may be a better way to word it, but I really like the idea behind this.

I am not a fan of Stork Myth...
I really like It Takes a Forum, but if the dream is to have a whole website that this forum is a part of, it wouldn't make sense to call the whole website It Takes a Forum.
What about calling the website "It Takes A Village". I think that really communicates the idea that it is community-focused and user-driven and also related to child rearing/conception etc. Then when you click over to the forum section of the website, that section is called "It Takes A Forum"
one of the mid-range goals we have is to get a website up with relevant, ACCURATE BS-free content. Articles that address loss, infertility, the nitty gritty of parenting. Real, honest, truthful looks at the less than rainbows-and-glitter side of becoming parents.
And so with that being considered we are hoping to come up with a name that will be relevant, fresh, and attractive to those TTC, for parents-to-be, and for parents who will bring new perspective to the forums.
If that's really the goal, it would probably be wise to hire a brand identity consultant.
im available I'm a digital marketer and adore branding.
I know the ladies at GBCN were worried at the beginning that the forum could end up dying out since they might not end up getting the traffic like they did on the nest, but almost three years later they are still alive and thriving. Not sure what my point is.
That the only thing it really takes to keep a forum alive is for people to post?
Oh, that is fantastic. This, this is wine. Look at what these idiots are drinking. Look at these dicks! I mean obviously, it's not really delicious, like hot chocolate or Coke, but for wine...brilliant.

I really like candid apples, because I think it points to the nature of the posters, and also doesn't exclude dads, non-parents, etc. And if SEO can be used well, the name of the site doesn't have to refer to babies at all.

I like the concept and I may be over thinking it, but some people may be put off by something related to that (it takes a forum) because of the "political" connotations.
If there is a whole content aspect to this beyond our forum, that majorly changes the naming factor. I think overture brought up good points about stating clear goals if a name change is in the works.
If we were only renaming the forum, PITA is brilliant. We were big ass pains to the former site. We are built around the no holds barred commentary on our experiences with pregnancy/parenting, infertility, TTC, and I don't remember the rest... Sorry. Point still stands.
If there are member contributed articles and an outside website involved... Well that changes everything. I'd lean more toward the stork myth.... But mostly bc I think the word myth sounds cool.
Title with tag: The Stork Myth, Because Sometimes it Takes a Forum
On the main page: The Stork Myth, Because sometimes it takes a forum to deal with (or to get the truth about) Conception, Pregnancy, IF, Loss, and Parenting

That cost is straight up mind blowing. What kind of revenue can you pull in from ads with that kind of traffic?
The business/numbers side of this is so interesting to me.
A fuck ton.
I'm not super savvy with ad revenue but I know that the CPM for a specialty site (the cost of 1,000 impressions) is around $1.25 for a full banner ad.
When you think about the sheer number of people on TheDump you can see where they were pulling in serious ad revenue.
