I literally LOL'd at this. Mother's are outrageous...especially mine. Shockingly enough I haven't had any crazy requests from my peach of a mother but I'm sure it will be something equally outrageous and mostly likely 3 days before the party, just enough time to please/ super stress me out.

Additionally I wanted to add for all of you (like me) feeling overwhelmed to produce a Pinterest perfect party but have either no time or no skill to do so...
I just bought this off amazon. Prob spent $35 on the whole thing and I'm obsessed with it...
Also, I'm paying someone to make me a chalkboard $20 and it will look something like this...
Lastly I've set up a 1st birthday photo shoot including a cake smash shoot (I will attempt to make my own larger than life cupcake, bought the mould off amazon)
As a teacher I'm getting a large summer check + coaching check so I'm just going to throw some $$ at the problem. Although I still have plans to do a monthly pic banner, high chair banner, and large #1 of pictures so there's that.

We must be long-lost sisters.
My mom has shown up twice to my kids' parties with her own cakes.

Like what kind of cake? Huge decorates cake? Homemade sheet cake? Is it always the same kind, or different?

That dress has been in my cart for a week now! Seeing how cute it looks on L may have convinced me to pull the trigger!
She is the director of food service/catering at a large hospital so she employs a pro cake baker. For my oldest's first birthday, I made two types of cupcakes and icing completely from scratch for like 40 guests. She apparently was mad that Henry wasn't going to have a smash cake so she brought her own small (maybe 8") cake decorated with a fondant puppy (to match the party theme). I was annoyed but gave him a carrot cake cupcake for the photos as was my plan all along. Ha.
Then when my middle kid turned 2, we had a chili bar and a banana split bar -- bananas are his absolute favorite food and the party was monkey themed. She made some comment about "you can't have a party without cake" and showed up with a two-tier cake decorated to match the party theme. DH nearly hit the roof. I refused to serve the cake at the party and took it to work for my coworkers to eat instead.
Since then, I don't even tell her what the theme is in advance. She actually asked me (progress!) a few weeks ago if I needed to place any cake orders with her baker. I told her we have it covered. We like to do things ourselves. Not to mention there are several amazing bakeries in our city to choose from.
And that pretty much sums up my mom as a grandma... FML.
First argument with my mother regarding dd birthday.
I am having to rent table and chairs for the event to seat all 30 family members. In order to save a little money I am not getting cloth table cloths but will purchase pink plastic ones from party city. It will save me around $50. My mother said that would be tacky. Then I told her it was a 1 year old birthday no one will care and I can use that $50 to pay for more food. She said the guest aren't 1 years old and offered to pay. I told her no.
What family member drinking a Margarita and eating a cupcake and BBQ is going to think....ehhh the party was okay but did you see those table cloths (clutch my pearls!)))....no one they are going to enjoy visiting and watch DD smash and eat her cake.....GRRRRR I'm now getting plastic to make a point
Thats ridiculous. It isn't a wedding its a birthday party. Plastic all the way!

Eta photographic evidence of her nuttiness.
She is bonkers, but those are pretty cute.
Yeah, the cuteness wasn't an issue. She's just so overbearing. Whatever I had planned wasn't good enough, it seemed.
soon2bmrsn, I would be super annoyed by that. That is quite a boundary issue.
Exactly. We've actually drifted apart since I've had kids. I mean, we still visit all the time and whatnot but she's not someone I confide in or anything. It's sad because we used to be close.

Got what I wanted at Target. I hope this "lots of bright colors" thing works and doesn't look like a cluster/train wreck...haha. I NEED to do the monthly photo display this weekend. And order DS1's gifts, since his birthday is Monday. #mustbePrimeeligible
I'm already a little frustrated that my mom feels the need to visit (from 7 hours away) not just for LOs party, but to be here on her actual birthday.
Is she coming twice? Or is the party close to the actual birthday? My mom would totally do that if she didn't live just an hour away.
No, having the party July 3rd, she's staying for the whole week after to provide child care, which includes LO's bday. I'd have said no, but then we get to give our DCP a week off, which saves us lots of $$.

anotherdreamer, how is the weather looking for the girls birthday party? It's looking like the rain is supposed to start here when the party does. Boooooooo I'm hoping and praying it holds off, I was so excited for a summer birthday party!

Not great I'm keeping an eye on it and hoping it shifts. Right now it says 65F with rain/thunderstorms all day.
We had rain for B's. Wasn't that big of a deal, though, because it's been in the 90s for 2 weeks now so we probably wouldn't have been outside anyways.

I was really hoping to have it outside. There is a lot more room in our yard, plus things for the kids to do. I also wanted to hang lanterns on our tree (memorial tree for the first baby we lost), and include it. I think it will be fine inside, but I was really hoping to have it outside.

What a sweet idea! I love puttin lanterns on your memorial tree. We have been busting ass go get the backyard ready and now I'm having to busy ass to get the house ready as a back up. Outside kid parties are so much better than inside ones.
We are planning ours for 8/2, after we get back from vacation. I have majorly slacked at booking the picnic pavilion I wanted to use, and now its booked gotta find another one now.
