One of my favorite topics in the world is talking about good baby and children's books! So, as inspired by a post on the nursery thread, have any of you thought of books you might buy to read to baby? For the STM+, what are some good books you already have?
Love you forever The very hungry caterpillar Giraffes can't dance Goodnight, goodnight construction site Are you my daddy? Little blue truck Brown bear Hippos go berserk
I typed this out and my page switched to the nursery thread so I lost my response. WTF??
When he was younger: Sandra Boynton books - they're pretty silly but he loved them as a baby Going to Bed Book - This is still his go-to bedtime book Harold and the Purple Crayon Brown Bear, Brown Bear The Very Hungry Caterpillar Giraffes Can't Dance - This is probably one of MY favorites! I love the message. Dr. Seuss
Now that he's a little older, he's more into series: Pete the Cat - They're hilarious and I swear he can do basic subtraction at 3yo because of Pete Berenstain Bears Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel The Little Engine that Could Dr. Seuss still Where's Waldo books
I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but these are all in solid rotation for us.
Also, if it's available in your area, check out Imagination Library. It's a non-profit run by Dolly Parton that sends a new age-appropriate book to your child free of charge each month. It's been a great way to introduce new stories to him.
We also make frequent trips to the library to try out books before buying them. When we find a book that he really responds to, we buy a copy and add it to his collection.
They're reminiscent of Goodnight Moon but personalized by location and highlight places throughout the state/local area. They're one of my go-to baby shower gifts now.

Oh, following! I love so many. Corduroy, Dr. Suess, Polar Express. For series, does anyone remember that furry-headed brown critter? "Just me and my dad" is one? They're great.
Can't think of many right now but I am so looking forward to perusing this thread.
soultrane Giraffes Can't Dance is by far my favorite book. DS is only so-so about it though. I love the illustrations and the message is so good!
Totally agree! DS asks for "Gerald" pretty frequently and I just hope that he's absorbing the message. He gets sad when the other animals are mean to him, so I think he gets it.
"Sometimes when you're different you just need a different song."

I loved the Little Critter books when I was a kid! DS is just so-so on them so far which makes me kind of sad. lol

Awesome thread.
I LOVE Giraffes Can't Dance.
The Little Blue Truck, various by Sandra Boynton (esp. The Going to Bed Book, which has been a bedtime routine book since the beginning), The Very Hungry Caterpillar are also on my list--totally earned. I Love You Stinky Face and Ten Little Fingers are sweet. Dr. Seuss's ABCs is so fun. The BabyLit series is really well-done; they are beautiful books.
The Goodnight Train, A Book of Sleep, Counting Kisses, and Kiss Goodnight are my favorite bedtime books currently, the latter despite its run-on sentences. They come to have a familiar, nice rhythm.
DD loves all lift-the-flap books (still!). She also loves Shh! We Have a Plan (which is crazy fun to read) and One Naked Baby.
The going to bed book and pretty much any Sandra boynton book especially the one with the turkey who puts his clothes on wrong. She thinks it's hilarious!
Touch and feel books were also a big hit and baby faces
Do cows meow was a favorite for a while. She still loves any animal book.
Brown bear brown bear
Now that she's getting older I've been pulling out a lot of books from my kindergarten library. She loves the old lady who swallowed a... Books and the how do dinosaur books. She likes telling the dinosaur no he shouldn't do stuff.
I need to check out little blue truck! She loved the Christmas one and I didn't know there was another.

DD will be getting You Were The First when this baby is born. It's sweet and makes me cry.
We like the bear series by Karma Wilson. Nancy Tillman books are nice. DD loves the "That's not my..." books. Anything Robert Munsch. Any lift the flap books... We love us some books.
Love you forever The very hungry caterpillar Giraffes can't dance Goodnight, goodnight construction site Are you my daddy? Little blue truck Brown bear Hippos go berserk
Yes to all of these! Little blue truck and goodnight goodnight construction site are DS's faves.
Wherever you are my love will find you by Nancy Tillman (we want to use a picture from this one for LOs nursery) On the night you were born (you can do this one via Put me in the story and have it personalized with LO's name) by Nancy Tillman Where is baby's belly button is a good lift the flap book Goodnight Train In my Ocean/Pond/Jungle/etc. are good puppet books and really pretty Goodnight moon and Guess how much I love you are classics, but not my fave Me and My Dad (Little Critter) Spot books (Goodnight spot, where is spot) Chikka Chikka Boom Boom Don't let the pigeon series
Now DS is also into: Amelia Bedilia Pete the Cat Dr. Seuss Character books like Cars, Diego, Mickey Mouse, etc. Magic School bus Theme books - space, tractors, trucks, construction, racing, etc.
We do a lot from our big book of Mother Goose rhymes...it's amazing how many she has memorized. Some of them are strange and morbid so we skip those, but there's a lot of great ones too.

A lot already mentioned!
DS also loves the Gruffalo. He will "read" it to me, meaning he has memorized certain parts and will say them as we look through the book. It's so sweet and fun.
I also still cry reading On the Night You were Born.
Love Corduroy, Giraffes Can't Dance, Steam Train, Dream Train, Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site, Lift the flap books, and Llama Llama books are a favorite in our house!
He's getting into character books at this age too, Pete the Cat, and then Paw Patrol, etc.
YES to all of these!!! He told me last night he was really really happy he got all of the pups for Christmas and the Paw Patroller so he can play with them all now. I'm about to be really really over Paw Patrol!
As an infant, DS's favorites were Brown Bear Brown Bear and Little Blue Truck. Then he got into the books that made sounds, like Noisy Farm and a Baby Einstein animal book. Now he loves Dr. Suess and truck books.
We've got a lot of books. DD tends to prefer the holiday themed ones for some reason. Also, Little Engine that could, Dragons Love Tacos, Itsy bitdy spider, anything Daniel tiger, and the If you give a ... books.
I started with the ones I remembered from my childhood. But some favorites we've added since are : Dragons Love Tacos The Gruffalo That's not my (Penguin, Owl, Airplane, Dinosaur, Monster, etc; he loves them all). Indestructibles books (they are just pictures on tyvex so they are waterproof and can't rip) Little Blue Truck How do Dinosaurs say goodnight? The Pout Pout Fish
Some of our favorites (DD 2): Brown Bear The Little Blue Truck Spot (lift flap books) Where is Baby's Belly Button (there are a bunch of others with the same illustration) Elephant and Piggy series (Are You in a Book is the one we had first and she loves them) Pinkalicious (loved that one way before I thought she would) Llama llama And now she's very in Peppa Pig so we have a million of those books (which are basically just episodes you read)

I second a lot of the books soultrane recommended! Especially Sandra Boynton books for the one year age range and Berenstain Bear books currently (age 2.5).
One thing I always looked for in baby books is real pictures - especially of babies, people and animals. Currently I look for books with a plot (Berenstain Bear / Curious George level plot is better than nothing!), the books where you provide the story and they provide the pictures (sorry, Good Dog Carl!) start to drive you crazy after reading them 100+ times!
I'm pretty sure all of our favourites have been mentioned here a number of times.
It's cute that DD has her favourites too - she'll point and say yes or no to what she wants to read.
One book I'm definitely getting baby boy is "the little boy who lost his name" - its a personalized story using the child's name - I gift it to most kids by their 2nd birthday....it's catered to older kids (2+ maybe), but we have one for DD and she still loves it, and I love the artwork in it.
I am so excited for baby and kid books! I won't be buying any for awhile because I know people will buy their favorites and my mom literally has shelves and shelves of old books from when we were kids. Reading to my kids is something I can't wait to do! (English teacher)
I love hearing about all these books, but I am going to be ecstatic the day that I can start reading Harry Potter to DS and this LO! I hope they like those books as much as I do!

Any Sandra Boyton books
Any of the Usborne books in the "That's not my...." Series
Goodnight Gorilla
Dr. Seuss board books
Like someone else mentioned above we have so many books and he loves being read to and looking at them. Touch and feel books are great because they are semi-interactive.
