My appetite has been okay today but I just ate some saltines and nearly threw up. What the heck?
Odd though it may seem, traditional "bland" foods one would normally turn to when nauseated (toast, crackers, buttered noodles) actually make me more sick. I do better with spicy or sweet. Plain makes me gag. But i have also spent roughly 11 months of the past 7 years with morning sickness so it could be that bland foods have exhausted their efficacy
Question about Zika...does it matter what trimester you are in? At a certain point are babies past the risk of microcephaly?
This is a great question, I was wondering the same thing
I saw one article that suggested the first and second trimesters, but that seemed to be an educated guess. I think they desperately want to do research on exactly these questions.

Right now they are saying all trimesters are at risk. More research is being done to try and determine the relationship between trimester & seriousness of birth defects. It's not just microcephaly though, some babies are also developing paralysis, vision & hearing issues. I was originally thinking if you are past first tri then maybe you are ok but then I read how much brain development goes on in third tri. So I don't know. Common sense is telling me the earlier you are, probably the worst it is?
My husband and I were hoping to fly to Miami & do a 4 night cruise to the Bahamas area so in 3 weeks and all the Zika stuff is just getting crazier & crazier. No official confirmed cases in the Bahamas but from what I've read that doesn't mean it isn't there. 80% of people with Zika don't have symptoms. This is all so stressful & crazy. I *really* want to go on a trip ASAP but it seems like the news is getting worse by the day. And the darn mosquitos that transmit it are down in the FL & Bahamas area, sigh
Now I'm like great because I was in Florida (beach) mid January. But it was cold & I don't remember any mosquitos
I'm torn on this. I wouldn't go somewhere with confirmed cases right now, but part of me feels like, what is the likelihood that you would be their first case? If your OB/MW is ok with it, I would probably still go but try to avoid bugs/wear bugspray/long clothing in buggy areas.

The problem is that it's taking a long time to confirm cases, especially with most people not showing symptoms. It's not a simple test that can be done at the dr. Only a few places in the world are able to test for it blah blah. But I agree if it really isn't there yet then very unlikely I would be the first case. I don't usually think of cruises as buggy
Another thing we have to remember is that, right now, the medical community has only established a relationship between the virus and these birtg defects. They have not established causation.

Most cephalic disorders are triggered very early in development. I'm trying to take some comfort in that. However, I was reading the other day that there is potential for postnatal onset with things like trauma and stroke. I wish they understood more about this link.
I also just started being able to drink coffee again, right at 12 weeks I haven't been able to finish a whole cup yet, but boy did I miss it!
Nectar of the gods. I used to drink 4 cups /day lol
I only ever drank 1 or 2 (with the exception of having a newborn and then during the 2 months ds decided sleep wasn't necessary) but it really is the best way to start the morning.
I've been steadily losing weight for the past month. I'm eating as much as I can stand, drinking water and not being all that active. I'm down almost 5lb from my Pre Pregnancy weight. Should I be concerned? I know its not atypical to lose weight in first tri, but I just didn't know how much was normal or if I should call my MW. Thoughts?

My MW told me i could lose up to 5% of my prepregnancy body weight before she would freak out

This probably depends on your pre-pregnancy weight, but I wouldn't be too worried. If yoy feel weak or it continues i woyld let them know. When I went through a similar situation my OB told me the baby's needs will be met before my own. That makes me feel a lot better on the days I can't keep down my vitamin and only consume carbs.

Everything I read says not to worry, as long as you're taking PNVs your fetus should still be getting enough nutrition for now. Later in pregnancy your metabolism will slow down and you'll be able to eat more, you'll make up for it then.

I wouldn't stress about it too much. I lost 15 with my first and she is fine!
Hi everyone. I have been MIA because I have been feeling really down and anxious. I was in the Caribbean two weeks ago when the cdc announced the warnings for zika virus and pregnant women. Originally the Island I was on was not a part of the travel warning, but it was added this week. I was on a resort that I didn't leave, no bites and no symptoms but as the news coverage intensifies, I'm freaking out. Ughhhh

pbandjelly I am so sorry you are going through this. I had the exact same thing happen. My second ultrasound was Tuesday and dr confirmed one very health baby and one much smaller empty sac. I definitely understand the happy and sad feelings.
bocaburger What a crazy situation. I am glad both babies are healthy!
Glad to hear some people are feeling a little better and even enjoying coffee again! I got to that point around 13/14 weeks with DD. hopefully we're all feeling a little more like ourselves in the next few weeks!

I'm sorry you are so stressed out, I would be too. I would take comfort in the fact that you didn't have any bites. I think you can ask to be tested for it? I think your chance of getting it is very low. The country was just added and it's not like you were in Brazil. Oh my gosh, can you imagine how stressed pregnant women in Brazil are?
Anyone know how they are deciding to add countries to the list? There have been a few cases reported in the US but the US isn't on the list
We're supposed to go to Florida in May. I think I'm going to cancel the trip. I'm of a better safe than sorry mindset.
I would cancel too because it's definitely humid in May & the mosquitos are for sure down there. Plus it will be more widespread in a few months. I'm still not so sure about February though. It's Florida's coldest month, I don't remember mosquitos in mid January. Could you go sooner if possible?

lennonkdc, I would not worry. My friends have ranged from losing 5-25 pounds in the first trimester. The 25 lb was pretty overweight to begin so he dr. is not worried.
penny2103, oh wow, good to know. I just emailed about 6 places right now asking about availability for November 1st. I guess I'd rather get into a small home environment now and just stay there until they are 5 if I cannot switch. Lots to consider!
My understanding is that they add countries to the list when there is danger of contracting the virus there. Since it's winter in the US, and the virus can only be transmitted by mosquitoes acting as a vector, there is no risk at this time of contracting the virus in the contiguous US
