My wife is a restaurant manager. For years she worked at a locally owned sports bar and bowling alley that makes a million dollars during busy months. The stories she would tell! One guy actually went to jail for assaulting her when she cut him off bc he was so intoxicated.
Now she works for a huge family friendly chain and while her stories are much more boring at least I don't have to worry about drunk people being assholes all the time.
I'm a Realtor, which makes every day very interesting!

I am a scientist (molecular biologist) for a large diagnostics/medical products company. I develop antibodies and antigens that are used in diagnostic assays. I like the daily responsibilities of my job, and I get to spend most of my time in the lab. I dislike the management in my department, but otherwise I like most aspects of my job and my company. I sometimes miss doing research in academia, but the pay is much better in industry, and since I am the only one working full time in my family, I need to stick with what pays well.
H has his master's degree in marriage and family therapy, and he currently works (part-time) as a clinic therapist at a community based social services organization. Previously he worked as an In home family therapist with the same company, but switched to working part time in the clinic when we got our foster sons so that he could be a SAHD part time with them. He preferred his former job to working in the clinic, but he wasn't able to continue to be in that position part time.
I'm a scientist (Ph.D.) and bumbling around academia. I love my degree and would personally have not been happy with anything less, but there are compelling reasons to stop at bachelors or masters and move into the field at those levels.
In many respects, I know too much and am too costly to pay a salary to. It's ...strange.
That said, I'd never talk anyone out of going into science because I'm a weirdo.

JustJudy how long have you been a realtor? Have you or any realtor friends you know moved a lot while doing it? Realty was something I suggested to my DH but he was pretty under the impression that you needed to stay in one place for long periods of time to be successful. Truth?
My husband is a police officer. That is all he has ever wanted to be until recently... he has been expressing some doubts. Law enforcement is not what it use to be. The scrutiny in the media and politics is insane today! Also the hours blow! He works nights, weekends and a lot of mandatory over time. He is considering a career change to be able to spend more time with his family. I would also prefer a career for him where I didn't have to worry about him coming home to me every night.
It's still semi dangerous but has he considered a corrections officer in a prison? Our good friend does this and his pension plan is so fucking good, he will retire at like 46 years old. He started on crappy hours but now he's worked his way to normal M-F daytime hours.
Yea, he has thought about that. Right now he's just researching other options. Like I said he never thought he would be doing anything else. So it would be a big change! I freaked out when he told me he was even researching!

The only problem with moving is that each state has different rules for licensing. We're actually moving back to CA this June and so I'm taking the classes for my CA license now and will take the test in April.
There are a lot of teams in the industry now and that does make it a little easier to move and keep your career going. I'm training someone right now to take over my book of business up here and when we move I'll try to join a team as a buyer's agent for the first year at least. As a Realtor you're basically a small business owner so each time you move you have to start over and build up your business.

MH is a high school teacher. He got his B.A. in english and then a Masters in Education. He teaches English and Humanities to juniors and seniors and absolutely loves it.
I got my first B.S. in Psychology. Right out of college I went into the social work field ... and hated it. I ended up going back to school and got another B.S. in Nursing. I am now working as a hematology/oncology RN and I absolutely love it! I am so glad I made the jump to go back to school. I am so much happier.
DH has a degree in physics and hydrogrsphic survey. He spent a few years working offshore doing ocean floor surveys working for a small business. He got out of the offshore business a few years ago, and now works from home doing tech support for survey software. I'm an electrical engineer, and i currently work for a design and manufacturing facility for offshore gear.

I'm getting my master's in Higher Education right now and plan to work in university administration. Previously, I worked in social sciences research and program evaluation. I've had kind of a rocky career path due to some serious health issues in my mid 20s. I hope that once I finish my degree, I will easily find a full time job and stay in it for a number of years. I'm looking forward to some career stability at this point.
MH is a mechanical engineer. He's 2 years out from his PhD and not thrilled with his current job. He's been interviewing and looking around, but so far nothing better has materialized.
It's sooo cool to hear about all these. Mine and MH won't help your H but I'll share anyway.
MH and I both work for a large financial institution but in different segments. He is the lead Portfolio Manager for their capital leasing department. He reviews capital loans for compliance with financial covenants and overall financial and managerial health of the business and makes recommendations on calling the loan, or upgrading/downgrading it's risk rating etc.
I work for the institutions insurance agency as an Employee Benefits Insurance Consultant. I work with an employer's HR & Finance departments to advise and guide them on their employee benefit plan management and renewals. I liaison between an employer and an insurance agency to analyze terms, make suggestions, implement plans such as health, dental, disability, life insurance, FSA etc. I have a Bachelors degree in Accounting so not entirely related, I fell into this field. I LOVE it minus (1) the employees calling me with claim issues and (2) having to deliver bad news to clients/employees like your insurance is going up in cost and you're getting less for it.

My H is currently a stay at home husband. He has a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Geoscience, but most companies around us won't even interview you without a Masters. My H is a lot like your H ourcrazynavylife. He loves being outdoors and working with his hands or running big equipment. He hates being inside at a desk. He does some dog training on the side. He would love to be a hunting guide or manage a large plantation or farm.

My H and I are pretty boring. We both work for the same company (a large retailer) but on the office side of the business. I'm an HR Manager and H is a Director in the online part of the company.
MH is a physician assistant who specializes in cardiothoracic surgery. He assists in surgery, manages the patients post-op in the recovery and ICU areas, occasionally sees patients in the clinic, and other various tasks that come along with patient management. The hours suck-he averages probably 60 a week and they're impossible to plan around. On his call days he's in the hospital a minimum of 12 hours, on either nights or days. On his non-call days, he's at the mercy of the OR. There's been days he's there until 9PM and days he's out as early as noon. He works every 3rd-4th weekend, either nights or days. I can't complain about the pay, although compared the the level of responsibility he has and the hours worked, it probably isn't as good as it should be. He loves it though.
I'm an RN. My specialty is cardiothoracic as well, either ICU or recovery. Basically, I take care of the patients MH operates on. So patients who either have had or are going to have open heart surgery or some sort; valve replacements, bypass surgery, heart and lung transplants, and various lung surgeries. Right now I work very part-time at the beside, but I was working as the supervisor of the ICU when I stepped down about a year ago (due to H's crazy schedule). I absolutely love what I do.

Wait ... I knew you were a nurse/NP but how did I not know you were in oncology?! Twins! I love hem/onc so much. I'd like to go for my NP several years down the road after getting floor experience (but sometimes taking more loans scares me).
Well, if he hates desk jobs then he would hate what DH does. lol
DH is a Front End Developer. For those who aren't familiar with the term he writes the code that makes websites function and look pretty. He does some design work on the side, but he primarily takes other people's designs and then makes them function. If you have the talent you can make some $$$$.

Didn't mean to run out on my own thread. DH came home today and actually has a 90% committed real life plan. I'm kinda shocked.
He's going to put in his separation paperwork to go from active duty to reserves. Then apply for one of the city lifeguard positions. He said you have to do two seasonal seasons before they'll hire you full time. He plans to take orders (go back on active duty) in between the seasons to supplement his income.
He still wants to put in his application for NCIS and this will give him something to do in the meantime. (The applications are only opened like once a year.)

I'm glad he has a plan ourcrazynavylife! I hope he finds something he likes.
TheEleventhHour LOL! We have talked before about Heme/Onc back when you were just about to start your job! I'm glad you are still liking it. Heme/Onc is such an awesome and special place.

My H is a software engineer and writes code and what not. He loves his job. His degree is electrical engineering.
I work 1x a month at a local running shop. It's okay, the owners are making it less and less fun as the years go on. I'd love to open my own shop one day.
Lurking - DH is also in the military (canadian) was an infantryman with 4 tours in Afghanistan and then got stuck at a desk job and absolutely hated it also. He ended up transferring and retraining to become an helicopter technician and loves the hands-on work that he does now.
Is transferring within the military and option for him in the U.S. Military? Aside from that many of the guys he was overseas with got out and became corrections officers, police officers, or work for hydro companies (odd)
HTH
He can really do anything though as long as he is ok with starting over in seniority every few years. That is the life of a civilian military spouse and he needs to be ok with the concept that your job will always come first now.
DH and I both went to school for engineering. After a stint in construction management, H went back for his PhD in Medical Physics and now is a professor at our alma mater.
I'm a Project Manager for a medical device company and run clinical trials in the interventional cardiology space.

MH is an engineer too and used to work for Applied Medical in Southern CA, it was so sexy when he designed laparoscopic surgical devices. Now he designs durables for that big lawn and garden company. Not as sexy, but he designed a sprayer that I thought looked like a vagina recently.
I just say I am in commercial real estate, specifically I work in investor relations for a boutique CRE investment firm. We do acquisitions, high grown funds, recapitalization, all that fun stuff. I work mainly with the owners of the properties, so lots of phone calls and walking people through projections and contracts. I specialize in properties held in fractional ownership, so up to 35 owners, it can be a mess! But it is kind of fun I have been in real estate since I left college, I love it.

ceejay, you'd typically find a Medical Physicist working in a hospital alongside oncologists developing radiation treatment protocols for cancer diagnoses. They also do radiation safety work, calibrate different mri/ct/cyberknife machines and work in imaging too. Basically anything that deals with shooting/containing particles in a medical setting.

MH is a firefighter for a tribal fire department. He's been involved in the fire service since he was 16. He has two degrees in fire science, and worked a stint in insurance before starting with the fire department almost 9 years ago. He is also an EMT, but most of his job entails sprinkler and alarm testing and inspections. When he was getting ready to graduate from college, he was also testing with police departments, but decided that was not what he wanted to do.
When he decided to leave the insurance business, his boss basically told him that he would never make as much as a firefighter as he would staying in insurance. MH hated the work (and the boss), and didn't care about the cut in pay. I noticed a difference in his attitude nearly immediately after he started at the FD.
My bachelor's degree is in Music Industry. I also went to law school and graduated with a concentration in intellectual property. Don't do it . I work in the civil clerk's office at my state Superior Court. I love the people I work with and helping people who come in. I do get to use my law degree to an extent (albeit not in the fields I studied), and I have set hours.
I currently work for SSA, writing/making disability determinations. ourcrazynavylife , I know you mentioned that he isn't into a desk job, but I can tell you that if he is looking for job security, flexibility, and benefits (not sure how important that is, assuming you get VA) he should look into positions with the Federal Government. Veterans get a preference when they apply. So, when everyone applies for a specific position, you are graded and ranked. Even if someone gets 100, they can be outranks by a veteran that scored 95, because the preference awards them 10 points. I don't love my job, but I love the salary, flexibility, stability, benefits, and ultimately knowing that I am helping people. And that makes it worth it to me. Social Security, the FAA, and the VA would be good places to look.
MH is a manager at a call center for a company that contracts with the VA to manage medical issues for veterans that are out of the VA service area. He doesn't love it, but it should really help him advance to his next position.
