Another one here for carrying extra from my first babe.
I was trying to hold off telling my mom until after my first appointment, but this nausea is so misreable I might tell her soon just so I have somebody else to complain to.

It's official, I have a cold and the pup has kennel cough. Hopefully between working from home the rest of the week and the long weekend coming up we both feel better.

Oh no. Hope you both feel better. Did the vet give you a cough suppressant for him? When our shih tzu had kennel cough in the fall, that cough suppressant really helped him get some rest and he was better in a couple of days.

They didn't give him one - I didn't even know they existed for dogs. They offered antibiotics but since the antibiotics won't treat the kennel cough and are only used to prevent secondary infection I chose not to give him any. He's an otherwise very healthy 2 year old and should be able to fight this off without any worry of a secondary infection.
I'll have to call the vet back tomorrow and ask about a cough suppressant. The cough sounds like it must hurt his throat so I'd love to get him some relief from that. Thank you for the suggestion!

Just checked the pill bottle (our idiot didn't take all his because he kept spitting them out when I wasn't looking and when I eventually realized it he'd gone almost a full day without a pill and hadn't coughed once...) and they gave us an RX for hydrocodone/homatropine. I'd definitely ask them about it. In the meantime, I read a few things that suggested a small spoonful of honey can help too, since it soothes the irritation in their throat. Our vet said she didn't recommend that, but mostly because of the sugar content (she already thinks our dogs are fat... it's a point of contention between us).
Our little guy was a very healthy, very robust little doggy, and he fought it off easily. But he needed to be able to rest in order to do that, and the cough suppressant really helped that. Without it he was getting these racking coughs every like 10-15 minutes.

Reviving the thread so I can complain. I'm so jealous of my dog right now. We got him cough meds today and he's snoozing away silently while I can barely breathe through my nose and can't take ALL the meds I want to take.
