We went so early for a couple of reasons.
1) C has so many teeth already (we just need our upper 2yr molars and we are done)
2) DH has terrible teeth. He has had 4 root canals and two teeth pulled at 28yrs old. We want to be on top of her teeth.
3) When her two front teeth came in they had a yellow stripe on both and the bottom wasn't smooth but notched looking. We talked to our Pedi and she recommended us going in earlier than usual to make sure it wasn't a weak enamel spot. She recommended us going between 15 months and 18 months.
She was given a good bill of health today and even though her two front teeth are notched it isn't bad enough where they are concerned. We just have to brush her front teeth a different way to make sure we are getting into the notches. They did mention when she's older we can have her front teeth sanded and buffed so it isn't noticeable (like for school)
We picked our dentist because they were just ranked #1 by parents in a city wide vote.

We took DS for his first check sometime between 2 and 3. The pediatrician didn't see any reason to go sooner. The pediatric dentist will tell you otherwise. I asked about when we should start bringing DD and they just said when she has several teeth. DS is due for a routine check next month anyway, so DD will be going for her first visit then. She doesn't have all of her teeth yet, but she's got enough IMO. I did a search online for pediatric dentists in our area and then checked reviews.
N hates getting her teeth brushed, so I'm going to let her get another appointment in of just watching R get his teeth cleaned before I have hers done. I'll schedule something right after her 2nd bday.
I think a lot recommend by their first birthday but I don't know what the official rec is. I took DS1 at 2 when he had all his teeth in. DS2 is just now cutting canines but I probably won't schedule him until DS1 is due to go back in the fall, so when he is a bit over 2. Hopefully all or most of his teeth will be in by then.
I've asked her pedi at every appointment since she had teeth, and asked my dentist/hygenist every time I've seen them since she was born. I plan to make an appointment for her right around her bday - I go next month, so I'll set up the appointment while I'm there. We'll just go to our regular dentist - they're all parents, so I think they get it.

We went to the pediatric dentist when Z was 7 months old because I noticed she had tartar or plaque build up, can't remember which one it was. They said some kids are prone to it and gave her a cleaning with the water gun, told us to brush and hopefully it won't come back. We got the card in the mail saying it's been 9 months so I brought her in on Monday, she had a cleaning and they checked her teeth.. they said she looks all good! Told us to come back in 6 months and it's ok for us to use toothpaste if it helps her be more willing to brush.
I didn't have specifics when looking for one because initially I was in a hurry to get her in and the closest one to us is in Staten Island, NY so I get to pay a $15 toll.. ugh, but they are really patient and quick with the check up which is nice.
We do not have her on our dental benefits and I haven't decided if we should add her or not, I'd have to see how much extra that would be but a checkup is $150. So I'd have to determine if it's worth less than $300 (=2x a year) to add her to the plan.. it probably it but not sure how much of a hassle it would be.
I guess we went really early. Took DS at around 1 year bc they recommended going within 6 months of the first tooth eruption. Everything went great, he laid on me in the chair and was very relaxed. We went back 6 months later and he did great then too. I picked that particular pediatric dentist bc they accept my insurance and because they have oral surgeons on staff, so if he needs teeth pulled or anything in the future they can do it there. I really wanted to get him used to the dentist at an early age so he doesn't have a potential melt down later. My sister had an awful first experience at the dentist and it took awhile for her to trust any dentist enough to look in her mouth.
