I've lived in rural Lancaster county for most of my life (left for college then came back) and I've developed a major dislike for them. They don't care about the environment, "English" laws or animals in any capacity above making them money. The last one really gets me. They treat their horses like they are disposable and run them ragged without ever getting vet care. Amish also run puppy mills. Gross, sad, inhumane puppy mills and don't care if they repeatedly get fined bc they are so rich that it doesn't really affect them. I could go on forever about why I don't like the Amish community. Most of what you see on tv about them is fake.

I grew up around a community of Amish and will add that many of them treat their children in much the same way as they treat their animals.

Interesting! We're surrounded by an Amish community in Southern Ohio and it's a little different. While some don't seem very friendly toward the "English", we have gotten to know a few nice families. I've never seen any mistreatment of animals or children.

This is so true. I rode horses in Lancaster county as a teen. We used to go to the New Holland auction to look for horses and the Amish animals that were there to be sold for meat (horses included) were the stuff of horror movies. Bone thin, broken down, wounded, deformed. It was horrible. I know they see animals as machines but I still can't grasp that kind of treatment.

This makes me so sad, because I love Amish farmers markets. So tasty

I grew up surrounded by Amish in Michigan (Big Rapids) and our family frequently bartered with them. They were respectful of their animals, children, and community too. Maybe a different group?
I live in rural northeast Ohio. The Amish around here are clean and polite and tend to treat their animals and their farms very well. Not saying there isn't the odd crazy one treating them like crap, but that is definitely not norm. They still ate nothing like you see on TV though. Except for Vanilla Ice goes Amish. That show is legit.

Perhaps. I would certainly never say ALL Amish mistreat their children. I only know what I have seen in the community around my hometown.
