No baby, but I have to write a literary fiction short story for my Fiction Writing class, and originally, I had named my protagonist Ailsa, but no one can pronounce her name correctly. I tried using Alice, but it just doesn't fit her character description.
The story is about a woman who loses her fiance, and then about a year later, this Great Dane shows up on her doorstep and he reminds her of Jack.
Below is the character sketch I did. Please help me find another name. My story is due for workshop tomorrow.
Thanks!
1. She’s in her early 30s.
2. She never knew her dad.
3. She’s estranged from her mother.
4. She was really close to her grandmother before she passed away.
5. She loves her sister but rarely sees her except at holidays. They try to talk on the phone at least once a week.
6. She and her sister are polar opposites.
7. She’s Fiery.
8. She’s Stubborn.
9. She’s never really gotten along with other women and prefers to hang out with the guys.
10. She’s a bartender.
11. She prefers whiskey and beer to the classiest wine.
12. She dreams of running away to Scotland.
13. She has a dry, sarcastic sense of humor.
14. She lives alone in a wooded area near the river.
15. She hates neighborhoods with cookie cutter homes that are stacked right on top of each other. Her sister lives in one of these neighborhoods. She finds it stifling.
16. She’s pretty handy. She put in her hardwood floors by herself, and turned an old barn door into her kitchen table.
17. She keeps a shotgun by the front door. She knows how to use it, but fortunately, she’s never had to.
18. She was once stabbed in the hand with a pocket knife while trying to break up a bar fight.
19. She doesn’t cry over physical pain—only emotional pain.
20. Her grandmother taught her how to play piano. That same piano now sits in her living room.
21. Her grandmother also taught her how to play poker.
22. She acts tough and secure, but deep down, she really hates being alone.
