MH said we are dog sitting for our friends next week and I'm so excited! He is a King Charles Cavalier cutie and so snuggly and fun. I have the worst doggie fever. I think having a dog to cuddle with would be a form of great therapy for me.

bex15, I have! Out of all the nominated films, my 2 favorites were Room and Spotlight. Room had me bawling (so emotional). Spotlight is based on true events (the catholic priest abuse scandal) and I found it very interesting.

The Big Short is also a very interesting story and edited well. I love Steve Carell in it. Brooklyn was another one I liked a lot. Mad Max was a movie I dreaded watching and didn't think I'd like at all. I was wrong. Really enjoyed it and found some nice deeper meaining in it (I love a movie that does that).

If I had to rate the 8 films nominated for Best Picture from Best to not as good (my opinion of course), it would look like this:

1. Room
2. Spotlight
3. Brooklyn
4. The Big Short
5. Mad Max: Fury Road
6. The Revenant
7. The Martian
8. Bridge of Spies

And for anyone that cares, the Best Picture award is actually quite tight this year. It will likely go to either The Big Short or The Revenant.

ladytiffany24, I was pleasantly surprised by Mad Max, too! It was extremely well done. I hope it at least sweeps the technical awards, since I doubt it will be Best Picture.

Not that anyone asked for my opinion, but I think Leo will get the Oscar, but idk if I think he fully deserved it. I was reading the A.V. Club's take on the awards and the articulated what I was thinking well -- he will probably get it because it's been a long time coming, and because the filming of his movie required so much of him. Even though there were plenty of other, more nuanced and rich character portrayals this year who would otherwise be more deserving potentially.

I am on the fence about Leo in general, although it might be more the movies that he's in rather than himself that I don't always love. Meh.

whatsit, Yes, he will win. Do I think he deserves it? Not really. He's getting pity win which I always hate. He's had better performances that were more well-derserved than this one. What bothers me about his camp's push for him to win this year is that they're making it all about how "hard" it was (the weather conditions, sleeping inside a horse, etc). Umm...you're an actor. That's your job!

EXACTLY. I mean, if you stick me outside in the tundra and make me sleep in a horse carcass, I will be acting very realistically what it's like to be stranded in the wilderness, too. You could do that to almost any actor and it'd be good acting, because it's barely "acting."

I've definitely seen better acting from him. I think one of my favorites was "What's eating Gilbert Grape?" I know it was one of his firsts but... He was good.

It's hard because I keep comparing Leo's performance to Eddie Redmaynes win last year. Reading everything he did to prepare for the part and then portraying someone who is still alive... I loved it.

Maybe not annnnyyyybody... but I am more impressed when people can be a dynamic character without tons of external factors to make it more realistic for them, I guess? I am with you in thinking that he deserved it already in the past. 

I haven't seen any of the Steve Jobs movies yet.

I really enjoyed Spotlight too.
I would put Bridge of Spies higher than last place (in mi opinion lol) but I still have a couple to watch

I really liked Brooklyn too

I've read the book Room, so I'm not really looking forward to the movie, creepy story. But I'm sure it's good.
