When I was a kid I wanted to be a veterinarian or a writer. Instead I ended up becoming a doctor who does nothing but write grants full-time in a desperate attempt to keep my job.
I wanted to be a teacher. After my first round of time with elementary kids I promptly changed to the medical field. Though now at the end of PA school I am wondering if they are two of the same.
packerfan4life, I'll join you on the "wanted to be a vet but highly allergic to cats" bench. I adopted a 10-year-old cat named Milo after I graduated from college and he was awesome. Once I had to put him down though, I decided that I should stick to dogs.
pbandj714, that's the only way I WFH. Wake up at the last possible second and then shower during lunch. Mama needs her sleep!
I had a crazy dream last night that I went on a date with Jay-Z. I was at a party and Beyonce was going out with some girls for a girls night and he asked me out. I was all excited but then I got scared that Beyonce would hate me because anywhere we went there would be photographers. He didn't seem too worried. Unfortunately, my toddler decided to wake me up in the middle of the dream and I never actually went anywhere with him. Hahahha...how's that for random!
PS - We have a man cold in the house and I could cry. Why is it always so dramatic?! A kid with a UTI is enough for me, I don't need a husband with a sore throat on top of it!
I never, ever knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. So, that's why I'm a "communications and development director" - it's like the vague-est title in the world.
frecklesnbrains, my best friend is a vet (she gets to work with Pandas!), but also does the grant dance every year to desperately keep her job... I have such respect for all that work in research. Such important work, but so hard to keep fighting for money! Good luck!
I bought our recliner yesterday! I found a great deal on Craigslist a few hours after it was posted and jumped on it. It was the brand I had been wanting and is so comfortable!

nymama917, feeling your pain about man-colds. I've been dealing with "my throat hurts" whining too, not to mention chain-saw caliber snoring, which is not helping my sleep deprivation problem...
I wanted to be a 'chimpanzee trainer', like Jane Goodall. Instead I attended a PhD program in biological psychology and now work as market research analyst. Each of these things are oddly similar.
My little brother used to say he wanted to be a 'stranger' (i.e. Strangers are bad), I'm happy to report that he's now a fully functioning, normal, non psychopathic adult.
The snoogle is failing on its own now, last night I had the great idea to use one of DS's large stuffed animals for added support, it worked but meant I slept cuddled around a giant 4 foot stuffed dog all night. Height of pregnancy ridiculousness.

I wanted be an engineer and I am, but I'm also teaching, which I didn't expect, and doing more basic science, which I really didn't expect. And the hospital work on the side...I ended up with a lot of hats. Chaotic but fun.

We lived in Baltimore when I was young and it was my dream to open homeless shelters so no one had to sleep on the streets. I would still like to do this somehow. I also wanted to be a teacher, but a one semester early experience class and I nope-nope-noped myself into a Communications degree. Now I am a marketing analyst, and I also write for a few blogs. I love writing. I am waiting for my big novel to hit me like a ton of bricks and make me a billion dollars.
But, ugh, I had my glucose test today and I feel terrible. I want nothing more than chik fil a chicken strips and a chocolate milkshake. I have had a headache and the shakes all day. I wish I could pay someone to bring me chik fil a.
I wanted to be about a million different things when I grew up including a teacher, police officer, physician, scientist, physical therapist, and many more. Now I'm a pediatric dentist and my days consist of singing and dancing and trying to catch a moving target - never a dull moment!
babyzebra, somehow I missed that you were a Pediatric dentist, hats off to you! I'm having DH take DS to his dental check up in mid May, do not want to wrestle a 3.5 year old into the chair at 37 weeks pregnant.
I had my 28 wk check up today and got my Tdap. Now I start the two week appointments. Also, since I'm old I get 2 more ultrasounds.
I always wanted to be a social worker. Then I became one. It was horrible. So I went back to school to turn a hobby/interest into a job. I was good at it, but I got so burned out. Now, if I go back to work when the kids are in school, it will be another career change.
Sometimes I regret not getting a technical degree. Kids just didn't do that when/where I was. It was just expected you went to a 4 year school to get a degree. But, now I think how I could have gotten a 2 year degree and gotten into the workforce quickly with a fraction of the loans, and still made decent money (probably better than what I did make).
I've only ever wanted to be a teacher. I thought I would be an elementary teacher, but through practicum experiences I found I really like special Ed at the high school level. Luckily it worked it when I graduated and found my job.

I didn't know what I wanted to be, besides a mom. When I graduated high school I was not living with my parents and I was given the choice get a job and move out or go to college. Prior to that I had no intentions of going to college but it looked like the easier route. I quickly chose a major and went to school at an amazing, private college for trust fund kids. Took out way too many loans and became a teacher. I loved my college experience and I do enjoy teaching, but if I could do it all over again I would make some different choices. It's never good when your student loan payments are higher than your mortgage. But I am proud to say I am the first and only person, so far, in my family to graduate college.

That's probably a good idea! I know I have a tough time when it gets toward the end. The kids are so wiggly sometimes and my belly gets in the way. The good thing is that I hear the funniest comments out of these kids every single day.

A shout out to all the awesome pediatric dentists.... As a mom with a kid who chipped her tooth nearly in half, I am so thankful for our young, energetic ped dentist!! I bet you're awesome!!
Somedays I wish I had done nursing because I'm so interested in medical stuff and think I would have really liked it. However, I do love teaching and know it's something I'm talented at. Now that I have my Master's in Education, it's doubtful I'll ever go back for nursing, but it sounds like something I would have liked.
Two randoms for today:
1) DS had a MAJOR toddler meltdown this morning when I was hanging out with a friend I hadn't seen in a year. It was so embarrassing. I had to go in the other room for him to calm down. My friend is a bit judgmental (the worst friend for this to happen in front of), and of course her toddler was acting like an angel. I was in tears by the time I got in the car.
2) This same friend gave me FOUR BOXES of 0-6 month baby girl clothes to borow! I went from barely having any baby girl clothes to barely needing anything the first 6 months! SO thankful!

I wanted to be an actress and a lawyer when I was little. At the time, my bratty little brother said, "She'd be really good at the arguing part" and that phrase haunts me to this day with my family. Somewhere in high school it changed to teacher or CPA. I am a CPA.
DS is 4 and wants to be a firefighter, an astronaut, and work with computers like daddy (programmer). He's going to be busy.
DH knew he wanted to be a programmer in 5th grade and never wavered.
txmommy14, I'm sorry it was such a stressful visit At least you got some awesome clothes!!
I wanted to be a famous actress when I was little, so I could be featured on a float in the Thanksgiving Day Parade! I ended up an investment banker for 7 years (until I collapsed from stress) and now work in accounting/contracts at a small defense contractor. My younger self would be seriously disappointed in my lack of glamour
Question for California STMs: Do you know if the "base pay" for SDI and PFL should include everything you were paid in the base period, or only salary? (I'm wondering about bonuses and other non-salary wages)
I have a meeting with HR to get info but I want to be as armed as possible with facts going in because they're notorious about this kind of thing.

My dream as a little kid was to be a news anchor. Who knows where I got that from.
I currently work for the state government doing eligibility for people who receive government benefits. My dream job now is to run a senior center or community center, but it's not a field where there's a lot of turn around, at least not here. So I keep looking, maybe some day!
