Do not ask me why I thought this but it was real embarrassing when I found out the truth:
DH and I are in a bar with friends (p.s. He is from Minnesota and I'm from Texas so we have a running yankee/southerner joke going on ) and Eric Clapton song comes on.. I sing as loudly as possible " Way Down South" and he goes 'what the hell babe??! It's LAY DOWN SALLY."
I honestly thought it was a song all about how awesome the south was FOR MY ENTIRE LIFE. I'm 31 and ashamed.
A dear friend's 5year old daughter recently informed me that the lyrics to that (terribly, awfully ridiculously bad) "Black Widow" song by Iggy What's-her-face are, in fact...."like a black wittle baby." You know, wittle, like the kind we're all carrying on our bladders currently.
Can't help but laugh whenever I hear it now. Much funnier that way of course.
I always thought the opening line to ACDC's "You Shook Me All Night Long" was: "she was a sex machine," and the other day I belted that one out and got some very weird looks. Apparently, she was a fast machine, and not a sex machine. Oooops
I heard on the radio once that a listener's grandfather loved that song that says, "Get your free cone" aka Missy Elliott "Get your freak on".
@mk1g - OMG...this is the best! Sounds like a potential Dairy Queen commercial. "Get ya free cone...get ya free cone...getcha getcha getcha getcha getcha FREE cone!"
Bob Segar song - Night Moves... Bob- "Working on her night moves" Brittney's - ..."Working on the NIGHT MOON"
Kip Moore- Beer Money Kip- "and I got a little beer money" Brittney- "and I got a little bit o money"
Both are just two, and DH had to correct me and be like WTF ru singing? , I had no idea! .. especially the bob segar one, I've been singing it that way my whole life! lol
I was just talking about this the other day! I said to DH, "What the actual fuck is a night moose? And how do you work on one?" He just laughed and laughed... now I know. All this time I pictured moose that is just really shady looking.
The national anthem. I thought, "Oh say can you see by the dawn's early light" was "...by the dawnserly light." I thought "dawnserly" was some kind of old-fashioned word I did not know.
The embarrassing thing is I thought this until I was an adult. One day, out of the blue, I was like, "OH DAWN'S EARLY!"

This is hilarious. I do this all the time, but my latest one is "Shake It Off." Instead of "fakers gonna fake fake fake," I was singing "bakers gonna bake bake bake"... Finally, after at least two weeks, I figured out that couldn't be right.
Here's one particularly idiotic one: Michael Jackson's Billie Jean "She says I am the one But the chair is not my son"
I know, wtf, right? Obviously, the chair is no one's son....
lolasky - I thought that for a while. Most of my childhood life, actually. Obviously my parents found it hilarious to hear me belting out “The CHAIRRRR is not my son!” that they just let me continue on.

Totally showing my age here, but I had a buddy in law school who once confessed to thinking the very first lyrics in Steve Perry's Oh Sherrie were, in fact as follows:
"CINNAMON GU-UM! Knowing how I...made you feel......... Well CINNAMON GU-UM...after all your, words of ste-e-el..."
Old song from my childhood that is hardly ever played anymore, but I totally sing it that way if I ever hear it....which is usually on some doctor's office muzak or something.

When I was younger I used to sing the line in Aladdin's Prince Ali "Prince Ali - fabulous he - Ali Ababwa Genuflect, show some respect: Down on one knee" as domicelly. Which makes no sense, but I was 8 so whatever. My mom makes fun of me constantly about it still.
If it makes you feel any better, I always just mumbled the genuflect part. No idea what that is and today is the first time I've read the real lyrics.
They are saying genuflect? I always thought they were saying "can you flex". I feel like my whole world has been turned upside down.
You know that song by the Cranberries, Zombie? Well I didn't know the name of the song and the part where she sings "Zoooohm bay. Zoooohm bay. Zoooohm bay ay ay ay" I always thought she was saying "Some day".

When I was in middle school I was playing cards with My friend and her parents and blinded by the light came on the stereo. I proceeded to ask "what's a douche?" After the actual lyric "revved up like a deuce!!" Not douche. However I received an awkward explanation of what a douche was from my friends mom. Haha.
THANK YOU!!!!! At first I was like, Just because I love me a frappacino, does not mean I think you are insane.
I looked it up, thinking maybe it was 'star crossed lovers'. When I saw it was "long list of ex lovers' I was like... well shit. I can't make that work. Starbucks lovers it will always be.

I just pictured how some people look sitting alone in a coffee shop with their earbuds in. They look lonely right?
And yay! So happy to have some support for the possibility of Michael Jackson's rejection of a chair!
Anyone remember Vengaboys??? They have a song, "We're Going to Ibiza"--except, in middle school, my friends and I would sing "we're going to eat pizza" probably bc we had no idea what Ibiza was....

This post is awesome! I am guilty of so many of these. Although I always heard the Taylor Swift as "ex lovers" and someone told me the Starbucks lovers and I laughed at them. I guess it's not that uncommon!
Green day song goes: "I wish someone out there would find me." I hear "I wish a mother bear would find me." Wtf.
I can't think of any recent ones that someone else hasn't mentioned already. When I was little "here comes the bride" always confused me. I wondered why everyone wanted to play that song walking down the aisle since it was saying the bride was all dressed and wide. I wonder now sometimes if I was maybe dropped on my head because that seems like something obvious that she's all dressed in white.
I always thought that Green Day was saying "Sell donuts at my door" instead of "So don't knock down my door" in When I Come Around.
Also, my sisters and I had a huge debate about Fleetwood Mac's Edge of Seventeen over whether it was a one-winged dove or a white winged dove. I totally thought it was a one-winged dove.
I thought it was one-winged dove until just this minute when I read this! >.<
I refuse to believe it's not one-winged dove.
When I was little, I thought the oldie "Peggy Sue" was "bathing suit." Whenever it came on oldies radio my sister and I would start jumping up and down singing "Bathing suit! Bathing suit! Bathing bathing bathing bathing bathing suit! I love you, my bathing suuuuuuuit!"
