Depends on what they're drinking. If they're drinking juice, then straw definitely. We don't give juice so that's not a factor. Milk gets drank out of a plastic straw cup with the removable straw. Those take & toss ones. Water he drinks out of a spill-proof travel straw cup with the rubber straw in it. It's just the basic Nuk brand one. A absolutely loves to drink out of open cups and every once in a while I'll give him one with water. Or I'll give him a drink out of a water bottle if we're out without his cup. He loves it but he always wants to do it himself, which of course results in water being dumped all over him, the front of his clothe, and usually me! So basically if it's water let him drink out of whatever you/he wants. Milk, keep with the less messy option because spilled milk=gross in my book. If you give juice or sugary drinks, be sure it stays in a straw to protect teeth.

We use camelbak bottles for water and whatever else (straw, sippy or 360) for milk. We'll start working more with open cups this summer once it warms up.
We use the Sassy 360 cups out and about and he only gets water in those.
We rarely have juice. As I write this though, he is drinking OJ out of an open cup. He LOVES open cups.
If I am drinking anything he has to have some, just because of the cup. He gets a short open cup at meals with milk, and water throughout the day. I only put between 1 and 2 inches of liquid in his open cups. For the most part he does really really well. Havent had a spill in a while. When he first started solids we didn't own any sippies, so he got water out of a shot glass, so he has always been kind of used to drinking that way.

Wow cups (360) for everything. At a restaurant she will get a straw cup or drink water through a straw from our cups. We are working on using normal cups.

Contigo bottle for water, other straw cups for milk.
Your LOs don't spill the open cup just for fun? Before teeth brushing/bath every night, I give LO a little water in an open cup. He spills it all down his face and giggles every time.
Hard top sippy, straw cups, open cups. Just depends. We aren't picky, we give her whatever is clean. She's doing really well with open cups so I'm thinking we should look into some kid sized ones

DS loves to get a hold of our open cups, play w and eat the ice, and spill. He thinks it is a huge joke. #strawcupsforlife

DD does GREAT with open cups, until she is done or bored, then she intentionally pours it out on the floor. Every. Single. Time. Then she looks at us and laughs. At least she always asks for a towel after so she can clean it up, she likes cleaning the spilled water.
She would be happiest with an open cup, but she can not be trusted.

I might have to make a clicky poll. It seems girls are less likely to immediately spill just for fun.

My boy would LOVE to get ahold of an open cup! There would be liquids everywhere. For this same reason, I can't set a plate or bowl in front of him without still holding onto the edge.
We're still mostly in bottles. He'll do sippys during the day but at night he wants a bottle. Things have been crazy the last couple months so I haven't bothered to transition. I'll get to it.

We do hard top sippy cups that are easy to clean. Maybe I am the only one? I have a weird complex about reusable straws. I know they make straw cleaners but they gross me out for adults or kids.
