I guess this will apply more to btdt moms, but it's open to all! We're talking about potty training. It will be a while before our j15 babies are using the toilet, but I'm betting you'd be lying if you said you hadn't thought about it yet!
DD2 is currently not allowed to wear pants of any type until she poops on the potty today. She's 3 years and almost 4 months old and refuses to poop on the toilet.
I have 4 little bears, just like my name says. 2 girls 2 boys ages 8,5,3, and my newest babe. 2 of my little bears have life threatening food allergies, feel free to ask me more about that!

I toilet trained ds when he was days past 3 yrs old. I didn't even bother giving it shot until then. I used the 3 day potty training method and although it took 5 days because I got a little to confident on day 3 which extended our time to 5 days. BUT, ds was daytime and nighttime trained by the end of day 5 which shocked me because up until then ds was waking up with soaking wet diapers.
DS will be 3 in May. I tried the 3 day and he just peed everywhere. So now I just hSve him sit on the potty in the morning and before we leave the house and before bath. Other than that I'm just taking his lead. I would love for him to use the potty but I'm not going to fight him on it.

This was my approach with dd2. She's incredibly stubborn and incredibly sensitive at the same time and so pushing her when she wasn't ready would have failed miserably. But now I know she CAN do it, she's just being lazy. So it's time for a little push.
ETA: dd1 trained herself and ds1 was not hard to train either but in typical boy fashion, it took a normal amount of time

Ugh, I am dreading potty training the next two. My oldest wasn't potty trained until after his fourth birthday. Partly because when he was two was when I got divorced from his bio dad, then I was in school and working, then I got married to DH, and about six months after that, once life had finally settled and he was a lot more comfortable did potty training finally worked (I had tried many time before!) then DD was potty trained just a couple months later at 2.5. She was a lot easier, once she was on board. But I think it helped that her older brother would stop playing to use the bathroom. And we live out in the country, so they both were allowed to pee outside this last summer if no one else was around, haha. I seriously have no idea how I potty trained them. I tried so many times, and really just one day they got it. But it makes me worried with the next two, because I still have no ideas or tricks that worked. But they were finally just ready!
That totally happens! I think our move and new baby probably prolonged things this time too

I totally hope it works for you. I think I was so wanting him potty trained before this baby that I pushed him too hard. I keep telling DS look if you go potty you can start preschool on the fall. He gets really excited about that but then doesn't go. So I guess he will go when is ready.

I wouldn't be pushing at all except she has shown me she knows very well how to pee in the toilet, and that she's aware of when she's pooping. I'm guessing she'll just hold it in until bedtime though, when I'll put a diaper on her.

kellimark - DS will also be 3 in May. We tried for the first time this past summer - way too early. Tried again just before Christmas - I noticed an improvement over the summer, but DH was super frustrated by all of it, so we put it on hold. I think he's ready, but now that we have DD I don't know when I'll have the time to focus on it properly. I may start doing the potty in the morning/before quiet time/before bed just so it's an option. We are also thinking of starting part time preschool, and the one we've chosen will help with potty training, so that could be a huge help!
DS1 is 26 months, and he pees on the potty maybe once per day after we change his diaper. I wait until he initiates it. I tried doing naked time, but he constantly played with his penis. Tried underwear, but he peed on 3 pairs within the first hour. Tried a potty watch, but he hated it and didn't want to wear it. So I will wait until he's more ready.

I have a friend that would potty train by just periodically having them sit on the potty. It worked as her kids wouldn't "work" under pressure. So maybe it will work for us. But anyway you can get them trained is great!!
I looked into preschool with helping potty train but most of them here you have to be trained to attend. Which is difficult bc he really wants to go to school. It would be awesome if that was an option!!

Yes plus infinity! Any one have any tricks to gets little boys to stop playing with their penis? (Yea, yea, cue all the jokes...but seriously, I need DS to stop yanking on it if he's ever going to learn!)

I live in a house full of boys. Trust me when I say, there are NO TRICKS to keep boys from playing with their penis. My 19 month old has played with it for a long time already, my 8 year old, 14 year old, and my H all grab their penises! I'm sure most of your husband's do too. It's all very normal.
I potty trained my 14 year old right at his second birthday.
My 8 year old refused to potty train until he was 3. And literally, he was trained in like 3 days. My 19 month old is starting to get curious. He watches my H go, and sometimes sees my 8 year old go. He comes to me and let's me know when his diaper needs to be changed.

Have you looked at elimination communication? Ds 1 was pooping in the potty at 9 weeks old. I'm certain he'd be independent about toileting now if he didn't have some delays. Basically the premise is why teach them to go in the diaper when you have to teach them to use the potty later. Ds can be very stubborn and he's good about using the toilet if he has to go. He's 2 year and 9 months old. I know it sounds crazy but our friendstold us about it and we tried it just for kicks. I'd say I've changed an average of one poopy diaper a month...not bad huh? The friends who introduced us to the concept gave up because they were living on a boat and out was kind of hard then, but then one day their daughter just started using the potty on her own with no training, I can't remember when exactly but I think it was around 18 months, she'd just take off her diaper and use a potty they had for her. Plus you don't have to go whole hog, I basically found taking ds in the morning he'd just go if he had to and I was not dealing with poopy explosion diapers anymore. I didn't do the wholewear naked baby thing they talk about.

This sounds interesting, but I'm assuming the premise is you see them straining to go and take them to the toilet? My kids have ALL had loose stools and I can never tell when they are going.

Well, she pooped! It worked!! And it was huge, lol I feel like with her, that first time getting her to do it is the biggest obstacle **Happy Mom Dance**

Our 3.5 year olds are potty trained. One could be night trained as well but the other is too heavy of a sleeper. Plus with possible baby regression it's worth a few boxes of pull ups to not do night training/extensive sheet washing right now.
4littlebears I think the other part of it is timing, eg your child usually goes after eating or sleeping so you try to catch them then, or if they're straining like you said. Theoretically after a while the child will associate the potty with going and will actually crawl towards it. I never had that much success but again my son has delays so I think that's part of it,he crawled and walked late and is late to speak but still understands what the potty is for, which I'm happy with, I'd rather have this than a 4 year old still needing diapers which is what made me try it, I figured if all it did was make them not afraid of the potty it was worth it. Interestingly my son had a loose bowel incident on the airplane and he was totally freaking out and biting me, I figured he had soiled his diaper so I went to change him, but he actually went on the potty and had really runny stool, do I'm guessing he was trying to tell me he needed the potty even though he was non verbal at the time. Your mileage may vary but I'm going to try it with ds 2 and see if its helpful to us again :-)
